Purple Urine Bag Syndrome in Geriatric Hospital: A Report of 2 Cases.

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is a rare clinical condition that occurs in older women with a long-term urinary catheterization. Other risk factors include alkaline urine, constipation, renal disease, and immobility. It presents as purple discoloration of the urine bag and tubing and is a mixture of pigment that becomes purple. Patient with PUBS usually do not complain of any symptoms. The clinical course is generally benign, and intensive treatment is not usually needed. But awareness of this syndrome is necessary for doctor and nurse in geriatric hospital so as to adequately treat urinary

Faecal incontinence in older people: delivering effective, dignified care.

Incontinence of faeces may effect up to 10% of adults in the community but people are reluctant to seek help owing to the stigma of this debilitating and distressing condition. There are multiple risk factors associated with the development of faecal incontinence that community nurses are well placed to identify. These risk factors range from reduced dietary and fluid intake to the complex symptoms found in patients with long-term conditions. Community continence services are historically nurse led and are delivered at the patient interface by community nurses, in collaboration with other disc

Chronic pain in elderly nursing home residents: the need for nursing leadership.

The incidence of chronic pain amongst elderly people in nursing homes is very high, making pain in this population a serious problem for aged care facilities. Research studies reveal a pattern of poor pain management in this setting despite the high incidence of pain suggesting that the management of pain in nursing homes is limited in scope and only partially effective. What is not fully appreciated by health professionals is the impact pain has on the lives of elderly people who live in nursing homes. In the study reported here a phenomenological method was used involving several in depth in

Reorganization of nurse scheduling reduces the risk of healthcare associated infections.

Efficient prevention and control of healthcare associated infections (HAIs) is still an open problem. Using contact data from wearable sensors at a short-stay geriatric ward, we propose a proof-of-concept modeling study that reorganizes nurse schedules for efficient infection control. This strategy switches and reassigns nurses' tasks through the optimization of shift timelines, while respecting feasibility constraints and satisfying patient-care requirements. Through a Susceptible-Colonized-Susceptible transmission model, we found that schedules reorganization reduced HAI risk by 27% (95% con

Nursing strategies for managing urological disorders in aging populations: a comprehensive review.

Urological disorders are increasingly common in aging populations, with conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer, urinary incontinence (UI), and repeated urinary tract infections (UTIs) affecting a growing number of individuals. Nurses play a central role in managing these conditions, addressing the complex needs of older adults who often face multiple health issues, polypharmacy, and mental health challenges. This review explores how nurses apply evidence-based practices to care for elderly patients with urological disorders, emphasizing patient-centered approach

[Patterns of detection of mild cognitive impairment in nursing].

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is characterized by an acquired cognitive loss that places individuals, mainly older adults, in an intermediate stage between normal cognitive functioning and dementia. This impairment has a high risk of progression to dementia and is suitable for screening, which allows more effective early intervention. Nursing professionals, especially community-based primary care nurses, play an important role in the detection and follow-up of MCI and in interventions for this condition. The first step should be to take a thorough history from both the patient and his or her

The Association between Functional Health Patterns and Frailty in Hospitalized Geriatric Patients.

This study investigates the association between the Functional Health Pattern Assessment Screening Tool (FHPAST) and frailty in hospitalized geriatric patients. One hundred and forty patients (mean age 78.2 years, age range 65-90) were screened for frailty using the Frail Scale during hospitalization in the geriatric unit. Among them, 57 patients were identified as prefrail (40.7%), and 83 were identified as frail (59.3%). A comparative analysis between groups in terms of the FHPAST components covering health risk, general well-being, and health promotion was performed. Correlations between FH

Educational interventions to improve student nurses' knowledge, attitudes, or willingness to work with older people: a systematic review of quantitative findings.

The purpose of this systematic literature review of quantitative findings was to examine the effectiveness of educational interventions to improve gerontological knowledge, attitudes, and willingness to work with older people in baccalaureate nursing students. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines, a systematic literature search was conducted in five databases. Quality assessment was conducted using the Mixed-Methods Appraisal Tool. Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, 41 papers were included in the review. The overall quality of studies

Prevent elder abuse--using a family systems approach.

1. Family stressors occur when the adult child is caregiver for an elderly parent, particularly when care is intensive or protracted. Under certain circumstances of high risk, severe and unresolved strains in intergenerational relationships can develop into elder abuse. 2. Elder abuse is a non-accidental act or omission that causes physical, psychological, or financial harm to an older person. 3. Using a family systems perspective, an original validated instrument is presented that evaluates the risk of elder abuse in the home (REAH). Using this instrument, the nurse can construct two profiles

Euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis caused by empagliflozin complicated by failure to thrive in a geriatric patient.

Euglycemic diabetic ketoacidosis (euDKA) is a rare but deadly complication of sodium-glucose cotransport-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors. Primarily indicated for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, the incidence of euDKA is expected to rise as SGLT-2 inhibitors become a mainstay therapy for diabetics with heart failure. Diagnosis of euDKA can be difficult given the presence of normoglycemia and is especially challenging among geriatric patients that are complicated by additional comorbidities. We present a case of an elderly male with multiple comorbidities who presented for dehydration and alter

Impact of Virtual Reality Mental Health Nursing Simulation on Nursing Students' Competence.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the impact of a Virtual Reality (VR)-based Mental Health Nursing Practice Simulation (MHNPS) on nursing students' competency in caring for individuals with mental disorders. Nursing students often face fear, anxiety, and helplessness during mental health (MH) rotations, impeding the attainment of learning objectives in the MH nursing practicum. Therefore, innovative strategies offering practice opportunities are crucial for their competence development. METHODS: Using a one-group pretest-posttest repeated measures experimental design, 50 nursing students, havi

Nutritional support and aging in preoperative nutrition.

In the past 20 years, an increased interest geriatric nutrition has induced researchers to document the distribution and magnitude of nutritional problems in the elderly population. It has been observed that the prevalence of malnutrition is greatly affected by the general health status and autonomy of the elderly. Among free-living healthy elderly persons, the prevalence of protein-caloric undernutrition is low. As health and functional capacities deteriorate with age, however, the prevalence increases dramatically to 30-65% of those in home care, nursing homes or in hospital. Formal nutritio

The effect of a nursing intervention on the incidence of older patient falls.

This paper describes the evaluation of a fall prevention protocol that combined the assessment of the mobility and confusion status of 2,023 patients aged 70 years and over and a toileting regimen for at risk patients who were both confused and having mobility problems. The six months' study was conducted in a 450 bed metropolitan teaching hospital and involved approximately 500 nursing staff in the hospital's medical and surgical wards. Almost five percent (4.7%) of patients in the study group fell; 13 patients fell more than once and the total number of falls was 112. Twenty-four percent of

Communication difficulties in hospitalized older adults with dementia.

Dementia adversely affects patients' receptive and expressive communication abilities, making it more difficult for nurses to assess their needs and provide necessary care. Communication Difficulties: Assessment and Interventions in Hospitalized Older Adults with Dementia outlines questions nurses can use to assess the nature and severity of language deficits, which vary greatly from patient to patient and over the course of the disease. Best-practice techniques for tailoring communication to each patient's abilities are also discussed. For a free online video demonstrating the use of these ap
