Biomarkers of environmental stress in gills of ribbed mussel Aulacomya atra atra (Nuevo Gulf, Northern Patagonia).

In this study, we assessed in gills of native ribbed mussels Aulacomya atra atra from three sites within Nuevo Gulf (Northern Patagonia) several biomarkers such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid radicals (LR), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and metallothionein (MT). Furthermore, concentrations of main trace metals (Fe, Al, Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb) were quantified in mussel tissue. Results showed significant induction of SOD, GST, MT and MDA, as well as, higher concentration of Fe, Al and Cd in winter than in summer. The high M

Mercury accumulation and flux across the gills and the intestine of the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus).

This paper details the results of perfusion experiments examining the accumulation of inorganic and methylmercury (Hg and MMHg) into the gill and intestine tissue of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. Additionally, the flux across the tissue to an internal medium, representative of crab tissue or haemolymph, during the perfusion was also measured. The accumulation and transfer processes were studied for each form by exposing the organs to a wide range of Hg and MMHg water concentrations, as well as a mixture of the two Hg forms. Experiments were also performed at different temperatures and in

Transcriptome profiling the gills of amoebic gill disease (AGD)-affected Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.): a role for tumor suppressor p53 in AGD pathogenesis?

Neoparamoeba spp. are amphizoic amoebae with the capacity to colonize the gills of some marine fish, causing AGD. Here, the gill tissue transcriptome response of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) to AGD is described. Tanks housing Atlantic salmon were inoculated with Neoparamoeba spp. and fish sampled at time points up to 8 days postinoculation (pi.). Gill tissues were taken from AGD-affected fish, and a DNA microarray was used to compare global gene expression against tissues from AGD-unaffected fish. A total of 206 genes, representing 190 unique transcripts, were reproducibly identified as up

Thermal stress differentially regulates eicosanoid and fatty acid metabolism in gills of the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis).

Thermal stress significantly affects bivalve aquaculture by triggering physiological disturbances and high mortality events. The objective of this study was to investigate how acute and repeated thermal stress alters the eicosanoid metabolism and the highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) composition in gill tissues of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. Mussels were exposed either to a single acute stress event (temperature raised from 12 °C to 25 °C for 1 h) or repetitive daily stress cycles over one week (daily temperature fluctuations between 12 °C and 25 °C). Using GC-FID and LC-QTOF-MS, fatty

Characteristics and molecular properties of crude hemeproteins extracted from Asian seabass gills using an ultrasound-assisted process.

BACKGROUND: The development of a safe and effective iron supplement is important for the treatment of iron-deficient anemia. Therefore, the crude hemeprotein extract (CHPE) from Asian seabass gills was extracted without (CON) and with ultrasound (US)-assisted process, followed by freeze-drying. The resulting freeze-dried crude hemeprotein extract (FDCHPE) powders were determined for trace mineral content, color, secondary structure, protein pattern, size distribution, volatile compounds, and amino acid composition. RESULTS: The extraction yields of CON-FDCHPE and US-FDCHPE were 6.76% and 13.6

Occurrence, distribution and characteristics of microplastics in gastrointestinal tract and gills of commercial marine fish from Malaysia.

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles with size below 5 mm, prevalence in marine environments and the occurrence have been reported in commercial marine fish worldwide. Microplastics' abilities to absorb various marine contaminants raised considerable concern on their role as a vector to spread harmful pollutants to the alienated environment. This study focussed on the occurrence of microplastics in gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and gills of 158 fishes across 16 species from two locations in Malaysia coastal waters. Microplastics were detected approximately 86% in the GIT and 92% in the gill

Comparative morphological and molecular studies on the oxygen-chemoreceptive cells in the carotid body and fish gills.

Oxygen-chemoreceptive cells play critical roles for the respiration control. This review summarizes the chemoreceptive cells in the carotid body and fish gills from a morphological and molecular perspective. The cells synthesize and secrete biogenic amines, neuropeptides, and neuroproteins and also express many signaling molecules and transcription factors. In mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, the carotid body primordium is consistently formed in the wall of the third arch artery which gives rise to the common carotid artery and the basal portion of the internal carotid artery. Consequ

Replacement of mitochondrion-rich cells during regeneration of the gills and opercular epithelium in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Transport epithelia maintain the volume, ion concentration and acid-base balance of blood and extracellular fluids. In teleost fish, mitochondrion-rich cells (MRCs) are specialized ionocytes that perform this role. These cells are found in epithelia of the gills and buccal surface of the operculum (the bony structure covering the gills). Proliferation of MRCs in response to changes in water salinity and other environmental stressors is well documented, but the cellular mechanisms underlying MRC proliferation are poorly understood. Recently, regeneration and epithelial cell replacement in the g

Changes in the gills of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) after chronic exposure to environmental cocaine concentration.

The recent discovery of illicit drugs in the aquatic environment has raised concerns about the possible effects on the aquatic fauna, because of the pharmacological activity of these substances. Cocaine is an illicit drug widespread in surface waters since it is the third most widely used drug in North America, Western and Central Europe, and the second in Latin America and the Caribbean. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental concentrations of cocaine on the gills of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). The gills of male silver eels exposed to 20 ng L-1 of cocai

The interbranchial lymphoid tissue likely contributes to immune tolerance and defense in the gills of Atlantic salmon.

Central and peripheral immune tolerance is together with defense mechanisms a hallmark of all lymphoid tissues. In fish, such tolerance is especially important in the gills, where the intimate contact between gill tissue and the aqueous environment would otherwise lead to continual immune stimulation by innocuous antigens. In this paper, we focus on the expression of genes associated with immune regulation by the interbranchial lymphoid tissue (ILT) in an attempt to understand its role in maintaining immune homeostasis. Both healthy and virus-challenged fish were investigated, and transcript l

Distribution of acetylcholine and catecholamines in fish gills and their potential roles in the hypoxic ventilatory response.

Carotid body glomus cells in mammals contain a plethora of different neurochemicals. Several hypotheses exist to explain their roles in oxygen-chemosensing. In the present study we assessed the distribution of serotonin, acetylcholine and catecholamines in the gills of trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) using immunohistochemistry, and an activity-dependent dye, Texas Red hydrazide (TXR). In fish the putative oxygen sensing cells are neuroepithelial cells (NECs) and the focus in recent studies has been on the role of serotonin in oxygen chemoreception. The NECs of trou

Gene expression profiling of the long-term adaptive response to hypoxia in the gills of adult zebrafish.

Low oxygen levels (hypoxia) play a role in clinical conditions such as stroke, chronic ischemia, and cancer. To better understand these diseases, it is crucial to study the responses of vertebrates to hypoxia. Among vertebrates, some teleosts have developed the ability to adapt to extremely low oxygen levels. We have studied long-term adaptive responses to hypoxia in adult zebrafish. We used zebrafish that survived severe hypoxic conditions for 3 wk and showed adaptive behavioral and phenotypic changes. We used cDNA microarrays to investigate hypoxia-induced changes in expression of 15,532 gen

Adrenergic innervation of the gills, pulmonary arterial plexus, and dorsal aorta in the neotenic salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum.

The presence of adrenergic innervation was investigated in four different vascular segments of the neotenic tiger salamander, Ambystoma tigrinum, by histofluorescent staining for catecholamines. The segments were the respiratory section of the gill, the branchial shunt vessels, a vascular plexus in the pulmonary artery, and the dorsal aorta. No adrenergic fibers were detected in the respiratory section of the gill or the pulmonary arterial plexus. In contrast, the branchial shunt vessels contained both adrenergic varicosities and catecholamine-containing cell bodies. These cells resemble Type

Rearing system type affects baseline and post-vaccination immune gene expression in Atlantic salmon gills during smoltification.

Atlantic salmon undergo critical development before sea transfer, and vaccination during this stage is routine to build protective immunity. This study compared immune responses to vaccination in smolt-stage salmon reared in flow-through (FT) versus recirculating (REC) aquaculture systems. Ten clinically healthy fish per facility were collected one week before and two weeks after intraperitoneal vaccination with commercial multivalent vaccines. Using qPCR, we compared immune gene expression in the fish gills. Before the vaccination, REC fish exhibited higher relative expression of genes coding

New Species of Monopisthocotyla from the gills of Metynnis luna (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) collected in the Peruvian Amazonia.

Monopisthocotyls represent one of the most diverse groups of ectoparasites associated with Neotropical freshwater fishes; however, their diversity in the Peruvian Amazon remains poorly known. The present study aimed to describe new species of monopisthocotyls parasitizing the gills of Metynnis luna Cope collected in the Nanay River, Loreto, Peru. Twenty specimens of M. luna were examined, from which five new species of monopisthocotyls belonging to the family Dactylogyridae were recovered: four species of the genus Anacanthorus Mizelle & Price, 1965 and one species of Notozothecium Boeger & Kr

Integrative taxonomy of Anacanthorus spp. (Monopisthocotyla, Dactylogyridae) parasitizing the gills of Triportheus spp. (Characiformes, Triportheidae) from Brazil.

This study describes seven new species of Anacanthorus (Monopisthocotyla, Dactylogyridae) parasitizing gills of Triportheus spp. (Characiformes, Triportheidae) from two aquatic ecosystems in Brazil. These new species exhibit unique characteristics, such as variations in the morphology of the male copulatory complex and the morphology of the hooks, corroborating a high degree of host-parasite specificity. Despite the broad distribution of Anacanthorus in Characiformes, both molecular and morphological data suggest close coevolution, with parasite lineages often associated with specific host gro

Effects of Cypermethrin on Opercular movements, Oxygen Consumption and Histopathology of Gills in Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus 1758).

Cypermethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid, has been found to contaminate water bodies adjacent to agricultural lands and is reported to be moderately toxic to the organisms living therein. This study examined the effects of cypermethrin on respiratory biomarkers in Oreochromis niloticus at four sub-lethal concentrations, including a control (0.0, 0.3, 0.6, and 1.0 µg/L) over 96 h. The actual concentrations were analytically confirmed through GC-ECD, with an average recovery rate of 93±0.21%. Cypermethrin-exposed O. niloticus showed higher mean opercular movement rates and oxygen consumption than th
