Gingival recession in maxillary canines and central incisors of individuals with clefts.

BACKGROUND: Mucogingival alterations are inherent to clefts and may be worsened by the several plastic surgeries required in these individuals. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, severity, and some possible etiologic factors of gingival recessions in teeth adjacent to the cleft. STUDY DESIGN: A total of 641 teeth (maxillary canines and central incisors) of 193 individuals with cleft lip and/or palate were examined. A generalized linear model was used, and the Wilcoxon test was used to compare the recession with cleft types. RESULTS: Comparison among cleft types

Gingival recession treatment with connective tissue grafts in smokers and non-smokers.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking can adversely affect the results of many periodontal procedures. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cigarette smoking affects wound healing of subepithelial connective tissue grafts. METHODS: Seventeen systemically healthy patients with 22 Miller Class I or II mucogingival defects were divided into a non-smoker group or smoker group. Patients were regarded as smokers if they reported smoking 10 to 20 cigarettes per day. The following parameters were documented at the surgery date and 3 and 6 months postoperatively: recession depth (RD), recession

Localized gingival recession caused by a C-PAP mask: a case report.

This case report describes a localized gingival recession on the labial of tooth # 6 caused by the nasal mask of a C-PAP (Continuous Positive Air Pressure) machine. The patient was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Treatment consisted of night-time use of a C-PAP machine. The patient noticed sudden exposure of the root surface on no. 6 and sought evaluation by his family dentist. He was referred to a periodontist for evaluation. A subepithelial connective tissue graft was performed to repair the defect. A maxillary bite splint with a buccal and apical extension to protect the graft

Gingival recession in the lower incisor region of 15-year-old subjects.

A sample of 1,003 children, aged 15 years, were examined for prevalence of gingival recession. It was found that 17% had pseudo gingival recession and 1% had true recession. The highest degree of association with local etiological factors was that between recession and the width of keratinized gingiva; frenal pull was the second most highly associated factor followed by tooth arch relationship and the least association existed between plaque and gingival recession. There was no association between calculus and recession.

Ten-year follow-up of bilateral gingival recession treatment: A case report.

BACKGROUND: This work aims to present a 10-year follow-up of a young patient who underwent treatment with collagen matrix (CM) combined with enamel matrix derivative (EMD) for bilateral gingival recessions in the maxillary canine region. METHODS: The patient, a 25-year-old woman, presented with bilateral Cairo type 1 recessions. A porcine-derived CM in combination with EMD was applied to the affected area after coronally positioned flaps. Over the subsequent decade, the patient was monitored for key follow-up parameters, that is, wound closure, root coverage, functional and aesthetic outcomes

Gingival Creep Failure: A Viscoelastic Theory of Recession in Thin Periodontal Phenotypes.

Gingival recession is commonly linked to alveolar bone dehiscence, inflammatory burden, traumatic brushing, or excessive orthodontic forces. However, recession is also observed in some patients despite apparently mild or "biologically acceptable" loading, particularly in thin periodontal phenotypes. Here, we propose the Gingival Creep Failure Theory, a hypothesis-driven conceptual framework in which gingival soft tissues undergo time-dependent viscoelastic deformation (creep) under sustained or repetitive tensile microstrain. Over time, accumulated deformation and microstructural fatigue may r

Psychological Aspects in Periodontal Aesthetics: Managing Gingival Recession in Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

Patients with body dysmorphic disorder have a pathological preoccupation with a perceived physical imperfection, which is often imagined or negligible, and seek medical or cosmetic management for the same. At times, they may engage in altering their illusory imperfections to correct their appearance, which in turn can result in injuries. Besides affecting multiple organ systems, dentists often encounter oral manifestations of self-caused injuries, which pose a diagnostic dilemma as they may resemble common periodontal conditions. The success of the intervention is also significantly influenced

Prevalence of Gingival Recession in the Nepalese Population Visiting Tertiary Care Hospital.

INTRODUCTION: Gingival recession is the exposure of root surface by an apical shift in the position of the gingiva. Exposure of the tooth surface leads to caries of the root surface, abrasion, erosion, sensitivity, esthetic concern and interproximal plaque accumulation. So, the objective of the present study was to find out the prevalence of recession in Nepalese population and its etiological factors. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 350 participants for a period of December 2023 to February 2024 at Department of Periodontology and Oral Implantology, Dhulikhel

Effects of fixed retainers on gingival recession - a 10-year retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: The aetiology of gingival recessions is not fully understood, and no evidence has yet emerged of a single predisposing factor that instigates this apical shift of the gingival margin. Nonetheless, both fixed retainers and orthodontic treatment have been cited as potential risk factors. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of orthodontic treatment and orthodontic fixed retainers on gingival recessions. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In total, 105 patients at the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Gothenburg who had undergone orthodontic treatment between 1995 - 2003 w

Contemporary minimally invasive VISTA approach for gingival recession coverage: a case series.

Gingival recession is a common problem that requires periodontal surgery to restore esthetics. The vestibular incision subperiosteal tunnel access (VISTA) technique is a minimally invasive recession coverage method that has gained popularity. This case series reviews the treatment outcomes in 10 patients with a total of 28 Miller Class I or Class II recession defects in the maxillary anterior region. The defects were treated with the VISTA technique alone without any grafting material. The clinical parameters measured at baseline and at 3- and 6-month follow-up examinations were probing depth,
