[Adaptational behaviour of peripheral and central acoustic responses in guinea pigs under the influence of various fractions of an extract from Gingko biloba (author's transl)].

Experimental studies on 114 guinea pigs proved definitely the influence of an extract from Ginkgo biloba batch no. 02 on the acoustic system. Experiments with animals ensured that the adaptation of excitation of the organ of Corti is significantly influenced. This result is shown by registrations of the acoustic nerve potentials in the adapted and nonadapted state. The relation of excitation to adaptation is significantly changed. Under adaptation of excitation an influence on the metabolism of involution is probable. The slow evoked potentials of the acoustic cortex showed no additional influ

Enzymatic degradation of ginkgolic acid by laccase immobilized on novel electrospun nanofiber mat.

BACKGROUND: Ginkgo biloba leaf extract contains many active ingredients that are beneficial for health. However, ginkgolic acid, one of the major components found in G. biloba extract, may cause serious allergic and toxic side effects. The purpose of this study is to immobilize the laccase system on the electrospun nylon fiber mat (NFM) to hydrolyze the ginkgolic acid in G. biloba leaf extract efficiently. RESULTS: Novel electrospinning technology successfully produced high-quality nanoscopic fiber mats made of a mixture of multi-walled carbon nanotube and nylon 6,6. Laccase that was immobili

[Implication of lipid peroxidation in triethyltin poisoning in the rat].

Triethyltin intoxication induces, in vivo, a significant increase of malondialdehyde concentration in rat brain. After treatment with a Ginkgo biloba extract, an extract known to possess antiedematous and radical scavenging properties, the malondialdehyde level in the brain is significantly decreased. This suggests that a lipid peroxidation process is associated with cerebral oedema induced by triethyltin.

Fatal seizures due to potential herb-drug interactions with Ginkgo biloba.

Alternative therapy including herbal drugs and complementary medicine is becoming increasingly popular. However, the rise in the incidence of herb-drug interactions is causing concern, especially in the absence of warning labels addressing potential adverse effects. We present the case of a 55-year-old male who suffered a fatal breakthrough seizure, with no evidence of non-compliance with his anticonvulsant medications. The autopsy report revealed subtherapeutic serum levels for both anticonvulsants Depakote and Dilantin. Concomitant with his prescribed medications, the decedent was also self-

Psychiatric Disorders and Polyphenols: Can They Be Helpful in Therapy?

The prevalence of psychiatric disorders permanently increases. Polyphenolic compounds can be involved in modulation of mental health including brain plasticity, behaviour, mood, depression, and cognition. In addition to their antioxidant ability other biomodulating properties have been observed. In the pathogenesis of depression disturbance in neurotransmitters, increased inflammatory processes, defects in neurogenesis and synaptic plasticity, mitochondrial dysfunction, and redox imbalance are observed. Ginkgo biloba, green tea, and Quercus robur extracts and curcumin can affect neuronal syste

Natural Compounds as Occult Ototoxins? Ginkgo biloba Flavonoids Moderately Damage Lateral Line Hair Cells.

Several drugs, including aminoglycosides and platinum-based chemotherapy agents, are well known for their ototoxic properties. However, FDA-approved drugs are not routinely tested for ototoxicity, so their potential to affect hearing often goes unrecognized. This issue is further compounded for natural products, where there is a lack of FDA oversight and the manufacturer is solely responsible for ensuring the safety of their products. Natural products such as herbal supplements are easily accessible and commonly used in the practice of traditional eastern and alternative medicine. Using the ze

Ginkgo biloba for cognitive impairment and dementia.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a neurocognitive disorder that interferes with cognition and independent functioning. Common dementia subtypes include Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and mixed type. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is a risk factor for dementia, and subjective cognitive complaints may be the earliest manifestation. Although cholinesterase inhibitors may help reduce some cognitive and behavioral symptoms, there is no established treatment that cures or slows dementia progression. Ginkgo biloba (ginkgo) is a popular herbal preparation that is used to improve brain and circulatory

Neuroprotective Potential of Ginkgo biloba in Retinal Diseases.

Like other tissues of the central nervous system, the retina is susceptible to damage by oxidative processes that result in several neurodegenerative disease such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, ischaemic retinal disease, retinal disease produced by light oxidation, and detached retina, among other diseases. The use of antioxidant substances is a solution to some health problems caused by oxidative stress, because they regulate redox homeostasis and reduce oxidative stress. This is important for neurodegeneration linked to oxidation processes. In line with

Follow that botanical: Challenges and recommendations for assessing absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of botanical dietary supplements.

Botanical dietary supplements are complex mixtures containing one or more botanical ingredient(s), each containing numerous constituents potentially responsible for its purported biological activity. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) data are critical to understand the safety of botanical dietary supplements, including their potential for pharmacokinetic botanical-drug or botanical-botanical interactions. However, ADME data for botanical dietary supplements are rarely available and frequently inadequate to characterize their fate in vivo. Based on an assessment of the

Comprehensive Exploration of the Neuroprotective Mechanisms of Ginkgo biloba Leaves in Treating Neurological Disorders.

Neurological disorders (NDs) are diseases that seriously affect the health of individuals worldwide, potentially leading to a significant reduction in the quality of life for patients and their families. Herbal medicines have been widely used in the treatment of NDs due to their multi-target and multi-pathway features. Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBLs), one of the most popular herbal medicines in the world, have been demonstrated to present therapeutic effects on NDs. However, the pharmacological mechanisms of GBLs in the treatment of neurological disorders have not been systematically summarized. T

Evidence for Complementary and Alternative Therapies to Treat Glaucoma.

Complementary and alternative medicine is used by approximately 5% of patients with glaucoma, and examples include marijuana, Ginkgo biloba extract, bilberry fruit extract, and acupuncture. Systemic marijuana is not beneficial for glaucoma due to the short duration of action, the lack of evidence that it alters disease progression, and its negative side effect profile. Drops that affect the cannabinoid pathway are still being studied. Ginkgo biloba and bilberry fruit extracts have been shown to decrease oxidative stress and improve perfusion of the optic nerve head. However, these findings are

Evidence for toxic effects of alkylphenols from Ginkgo biloba in the hen's egg test (HET).

Extracts from the leaves of the Gingko tree (Ginkgo biloba L.) are therapeutically used for the treatment of peripheral and cerebral vascular disorders as well as multi-infarct or Alzheimer-type dementia. As constituents with potential contact allergenic and toxic properties in crude Ginkgo extracts a group of alkylphenols (e.g., ginkgolic acids, ginkgol, bilobol) has been described. Thus, for reasons of drug safety a maximal concentration (< or = 5 ppm) of ginkgolic acids is requested by the Monograph of the Commission E of the former German Federal Health Agency (Bundesgesundheitsamt, BGA).
