Financing global mental health services and the role of WHO.

A concrete indicator of a government's commitment to mental health services is the amount of financial resources it allocates. To encourage the government to increase mental health funding, it would require additional research and dissemination findings on the economic consequences of mental health disorders, cost-effectiveness benefits of alternatives treatment, and alternative methods of financing for mental health illnesses. In addition, an organized consumer group can be an effective means in informing legislative and government policy makers. Public financing alone is not sufficient for t

Strengthening Global Health Governance: Recommendations for the World Health Organization in Future Pandemic Responses.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in the World Health Organization's (WHO) governance structures, raising significant concerns about its capacity to manage global public health crises. Governance challenges, including delayed responses, inadequate international coordination, and communication failures, undermined public trust and global health security, necessitating rigorous ethical examination of WHO's institutional decision-making processes. This article examines WHO's pandemic response through ethical frameworks-particularly care ethics-while evaluating how

Infectious disease control: from health security strengthening to health systems improvement at global level.

Since the twenty first century, the outbreaks of global infectious diseases have caused several public health emergencies of international concern, imposing an enormous impact on population health, the economy, and social development. The COVID-19 pandemic has once again exposed deficiencies in existing global health systems, emergency management, and disease surveillance, and highlighted the importance of developing effective evaluation tools. This article outlines current challenges emerging from infectious disease control from the perspective of global health, elucidated through influenza,

Assessing Health Data Security Risks in Global Health Partnerships: Development of a Conceptual Framework.

BACKGROUND: Health care databases contain a wealth of information that can be used to develop programs and mature health care systems. There is concern that the sensitive nature of health data (eg, ethnicity, reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, and lifestyle information) can have significant impact on individuals if misused, particularly among vulnerable and marginalized populations. As academic institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and international agencies begin to collaborate with low- and middle-income countries to develop and deploy health information technology

[VI Symposium: Some global health problems with local impact: Great challenges for Public Health].

The objective of the symposium was to emphasize the great public health challenges that we are facing today; such is the case of dementia, which is one of the main causes of disability and dependence among older adults. Another important issue is antibiotic resistance; even though it has played a key role in the health of humanity, its indiscriminate use has resulted in increased bacterial resistance. Therefore, health regulations in the rational use of prescribed drugs in our country are part of the actions taken in order to not only control the use of such drugs, but also regulate different

Health system strengthening: prospects and threats for its sustainability on the global health policy agenda.

In 2013, Hafner and Shiffman applied Kingdon's public policy process model to explain the emergence of global attention to health system strengthening (HSS). They questioned, however, HSS's sustainability on the global health policy agenda, citing various concerns. Guided by the Grindle and Thomas interactive model of policy implementation, we advance and elaborate a proposition: a confluence of developments will contribute to maintaining HSS's prominent place on the agenda until at least 2030. Those developments include (1) technical, managerial, financial, and political responses to unpredic

Global trends in pediatric burn injuries and care capacity from the World Health Organization Global Burn Registry.

BACKGROUND: Burn injuries are a major cause of death and disability globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Burn Registry (GBR) to improve understanding of burn injuries worldwide, identify prevention targets, and benchmark acute care. We aimed to describe the epidemiology, risk factors, and outcomes of children with burns to demonstrate the GBR's utility and inform needs for pediatric burn prevention and treatment. METHODS: We performed descriptive analyses of children age ≤ 18 years in the WHO GBR. We also described facility-level capacity. Data were extracted in S

Global determinants of cervical cancer outcomes: a health systems analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Significant global health disparities persist in cervical cancer, with over 85% of cases and deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In many settings, access to screening, vaccination and treatment is limited. Despite cervical cancer being largely preventable through human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and early detection, many women around the world face inadequate healthcare infrastructure, lack of awareness, cultural stigma and gender barriers to seeking care. Therefore, we evaluated global health system metrics that may inform efforts to improve equity i

Global health expenditures on cancer control: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Global health expenditures on cancer control have not previously been systematically quantified. We aimed to identify and harmonise publicly accessible, nationally representative estimates of recurrent expenditures on cancer control globally, benchmark them against national incidence of cancer, and produce estimates of expenditure on cancer control for countries and territories without expenditure data. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we identified 218 countries and territories for inclusion in our search using the World Bank Open Data classification of economies. We used

The Global Obesity Epidemic: Epidemiology, Health Burden and Policy Priorities.

The global prevalence of obesity has more than tripled since 1975, now affecting nearly one billion adults and over 170 million children and adolescents. In 2025, The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Commission on Clinical Obesity redefined obesity as a chronic, multisystem disease characterised by excess adiposity leading to organ dysfunction, distinguishing between preclinical obesity (excess adiposity without end-organ injury) and clinical obesity (manifest metabolic or structural complications). This framework moves beyond reliance on BMI, acknowledging that ectopic fat deposition in the li

Meaningful Community Engagement-The Foundations of Global Oral Health Research.

The global burden of oral diseases and shocking inequalities highlight the failure of current oral health systems and policies. One of the limitations with existing approaches is that they rely almost exclusively on professional perspectives with minimal input from communities, and in particular disadvantaged populations. As a consequence, interventions often fail to achieve sustained improvements and have limited impact in reducing inequalities. Within global health, there is growing recognition of the importance of meaningful community engagement in all aspects of policy, practice and resear

Advancing global health access through market shaping: Cases and learnings.

New health products have contributed to major improvements in public health, but many clinically effective interventions still face delays in reaching low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Market shaping approaches have emerged as a set of tools designed to address such access gaps by influencing prices, supply, and demand. Drawing on practitioner experience and illustrative cases, this paper examines how market shaping mechanisms have been used to expand access to pharmaceutical products in LMICs. We review examples including dolutegravir, rifapentine-based tuberculosis preventive therapy

Decolonising global health evaluations: A scoping review of methodological frameworks.

The field of global health evaluation is critiqued for its reliance on Eurocentric paradigms that perpetuate epistemic injustice. A rapidly evolving yet conceptually fragmented literature on decolonising evaluation has emerged in response. We conducted a scoping review to chart the nature and breadth of this literature and synthesise insights to guide future evaluation scholarship and practice. Academic database searches identified 1,024 records, of which 732 were screened at title and abstract following deduplication. Combined with 138 records from grey literature and citation searches, a tot

Exploring global efforts in mental health screening and early detection.

INTRODUCTION: Screening tools are frequently used to assess symptoms of mental disorders in different settings before they worsen. They may theoretically be used in large-scale programs to support implementation of national action plans and mental health strategies in consideration of broader or more specific lines of action for support of individuals struggling with mental health issues. Although screening tools and programs are generally effective, there are inconsistencies in their design, planning, application, measurement of outcomes, mechanisms used for follow-up, and ethical considerati

AskMyDoc: engaging, educating, and empowering global majority communities on health.

Health inequities disproportionality affects global majority patients, due to socio-economic disadvantage. This leads to poorer health outcomes, in terms of morbidity and mortality. Community based interventions are ways by which to improve the health of these underserved communities. AskMyDoc is a charity that was founded in 2011, with the aim to engage, educate and empower ethnic minority communities. This paper aims to highlight the work of the organisation, reflecting on the highlights and challenges of breaking down barriers to health for global majority patients. AskMyDoc has engaged thr

Global Oral Health Birth Cohort Studies: A Living Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: In 2020, a scoping review mapped the existing Oral Health Birth Cohort Studies (OHBCS). Given the rapid growth and disparate nature of this field, this living scoping review aimed to identify new OHBCS and report their findings. METHODS: A three-step search strategy was adopted. Studies were searched using the databases PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus, along with the grey literature with no language restrictions. Two independent reviewers screened the studies. OHBCS included those with baseline data collection during pregnancy or within the first year of the child's life

Ebola virus disease: A persistent challenge in global health security.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a highly fatal zoonotic disease caused by a negative-stranded RNA virus of the genus Ebolavirus in the family Filoviridae. Since its first discovery in 1976 in Central Africa, the disease has triggered several large outbreaks with a mortality rate that can reach 90%. Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or tissues of infected individuals, including corpses, and can also spread in healthcare facilities if infection control procedures are not properly implemented. Fruit bats of the family Pteropodidae are thought to be the natural

Understanding machupo virus: A neglected arenavirus with global health importance.

Machupo virus (MACV), classified within the Mammarenavirus genus of the Arenaviridae family, serves as the causative agent of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever (BHF), a life-threatening zoonosis primarily confined to rural regions of Bolivia's Beni Department. First identified in 1959 during epidemics in San Joaquín, this bisegmented, ambisense, single-stranded RNA virus exhibits 20%-35% case-fatality rates, with highest lethality among children under 5 and adults over 55. The vesper mouse (Calomys callosus) acts as the principal reservoir, sustaining lifelong asymptomatic infections and shedding vir
