Acne and diet: a review.

Acne is one of the most frequent dermatological afflictions especially for people in their first 30 years of age. Several studies have shown that nutrition is one of the key factors involved in acne pathogenesis. Data show that a high glycemic index diet may be a trigger in acne pathogenesis, while patients with a low glycemic index diet have fewer acne lesions. Milk and chocolate are also involved in the exacerbation of acne. However, foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids suppress the production of inflammatory cytokines with therapeutic effect. Additionally, docosapentaenoic acid and γ-linolenic

Visceral fat rating, but not glycemic variability, is strongly associated with arterial stiffness in non-obese adults with type 1 diabetes.

Adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) exhibit premature arterial stiffening, but the relative roles of visceral adiposity and recent glycemic variability (GV) remain unclear. We investigated these associations in a group of 120 non-obese adults with T1DM. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was measured oscillometrically, and visceral fat rating (VFR) was quantified by multifrequency bioimpedance. Ninety-day continuous glucose monitoring data provided glycemic metrics including mean glucose, time in range, time above range, glycemic risk index, mean amplitude of glycemic excursions, mean of daily

Association between glycemic control and cardiovascular events in older Japanese adults with diabetes mellitus: An analysis of the Japanese medical administrative database.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: The relationship between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and cardiovascular events in older adults was investigated using a Japanese administrative medical database. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Anonymized medical data on patients with diabetes mellitus aged ≥65 years for the period from January 2010 to December 2019 were extracted from the EBM Provider database. The primary end-point was a composite of cardiovascular events, whereas the other end-points included severe hypoglycemia and fracture. The association between cardiovascular events and HbA1c at the index date (i.e., approxi

The Relationship Between Glycemic Control and Concomitant Hypertension on Arterial Stiffness in Type II Diabetes.

PURPOSE: The impact of glycemic control on macrovascular complications and arterial stiffness in type II diabetes (T2D), as well as the extent of additive effect of hypertension, is unclear. The aims of this study were to investigate the impact of glycemic control on the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), an indicator of arterial stiffness, and to determine the relative risk of concomitant diabetes and hypertension with arterial stiffness. METHODS: One hundred and nine participants were enrolled and classified as non-diabetes (n= 37) and diabetes (n=72); the diabetic group was further identi

Relation of severe coronary artery narrowing to insulin or thiazolidinedione use in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (from the Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation 2 Diabetes Study).

Patients with diabetes continue to die of coronary artery disease (CAD) at rates 2 to 4 times higher than patients without diabetes, despite advances in treatment of cardiovascular disease. The role of glycemic control therapies, independent of their glucose-lowering effects, on cardiovascular disease is a recurring question. We examined the association of glycemic control therapies with extent of CAD as measured by coronary angiogram obtained at baseline in 1,803 subjects in the Bypass Angioplasty Revascularization Investigation 2 Diabetes (BARI 2D) trial who had type 2 diabetes mellitus, doc

Optimizing carbohydrate quality: a path to better health for women with PCOS.

INTRODUCTION: The rising global prevalence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) poses a significant threat to women's metabolic and reproductive health. The carbohydrate quality-particularly dietary fiber, glycemic index (GI), and glycemic load (GL)-in addressing metabolic and reproductive abnormalities remains debated due to the condition's heterogeneity. "The ongoing debate regarding PCOS arises from its complexity and heterogeneity, including variations in clinical symptoms, underlying causes, and treatment responses." This study aimed to perform a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials

Impact of Long-Term Poor and Good Glycemic Control on Metabolomics Alterations in Type 1 Diabetic People.

CONTEXT: Poor glycemic control in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with both micro- and macrovascular complications, but good glycemic control does not fully prevent the risk of these complications. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine whether T1D with good glycemic control have persistent abnormalities of metabolites and pathways that exist in T1D with poor glycemic control. DESIGN: We compared plasma metabolites in T1D with poor (glycated hemoglobin ≥ 8.5%, T1D[-] and good (glycated hemoglobin < 6.5%, T1D[+]) glycemic control with nondiabetic controls

Nutrient pathways and neural tube defects: a semi-Bayesian hierarchical analysis.

BACKGROUND: We used conventional and hierarchical logistic regression to examine the association of neural tube defects (NTDs) with intake of 26 nutrients that contribute to the mechanistic pathways of methylation, glycemic control, and oxidative stress, all of which have been implicated in NTD etiology. The hierarchical approach produces more plausible, more stable estimates than the conventional approach, while adjusting for potential confounding by other nutrients. METHODS: Analyses included 386 cases and 408 nonmalformed controls with complete data on nutrients and potential confounders (

From Clinician-Based Risk Score to Diabetes Complications: Validating the Glycemia Risk Index with the Virtual Diabetes Control and Complications Trial Continuous Glucose Monitoring Data.

BACKGROUND: The glycemia risk index (GRI) is a validated continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)-derived metric of overall glycemic risk. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) has been the gold-standard metric of glycemic control since the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT). This study evaluates the relationship of GRI with long-term diabetes complications and compares its performance with HbA1c within the Virtual DCCT. METHODS: The Virtual DCCT reconstructed CGM traces from HbA1c values and quarterly 7-point capillary glucose profiles collected during the original DCCT. Glycemia risk index values

Sleep Quality, Glycemic Control, and Daytime Dysfunction in Type 2 Diabetes.

Background and Objectives: Adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) frequently exhibit diminished sleep quality, which is affected by their glycemic control. Both poor sleep and inadequate glycemic management increase the risk of complications worldwide. However, the relationship between sleep quality, daytime dysfunction, and glycemic control in adults with T2DM is not well understood. To address this gap, this study aimed to examine the association between overall sleep quality, including daytime dysfunction, and glycemic control in adults with T2DM. Materials and Methods: A hos

Optimizing glycemic variability in type 2 diabetes using simple dietary and culinary recommendations to modulate starch digestibility: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: In type 2 diabetes (T2D), postprandial glycemic excursions significantly contribute to glycemic variability (GV) and cardiovascular disease risk. Because starch is the main carbohydrate source, controlling its digestibility in the daily diet to promote a gradual glucose release represents a promising nutritional strategy to reduce GV and improve glycemic control. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the feasibility and efficiency of a 3-mo dietary intervention emphasizing slowly digestible starch (SDS) through commercial starchy product supply and dietary and culinary counseling, on GV, gl

Short-term poor glycemic control and retinal microvascular changes in pediatric Type 1 Diabetes patients in Singapore: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Poor glycemic control in Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) patients is strongly associated with an increased risk of diabetes-related microvascular complications later in life, but it is unclear whether short period of poor glycemic control in children with T1D can cause evident microvascular morphological changes long before any pathological manifestation. Our study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between poor glycemic control and subsequent changes in retinal microvasculature, in a pilot study of 55 pediatric T1D patients from Singapore after a one-year follow-up. METHODS:
