Preterm infants are increasingly diagnosed as having "extrauterine growth restriction" (EUGR) or "postnatal growth failure" (PGF). Usually EUGR/PGF is diagnosed when weight is <10th percentile at either discharge or 36-40 weeks postmenstrual age. The reasons why the phrases EUGR/PGF are unhelpful include, they: (i) are not predictive of adverse outcome; (ii) are based only on weight without any consideration of head or length growth, proportionality, body composition, or genetic potential; (iii) ignore normal postnatal weight loss; (iv) are usually assessed prior to growth slowing of the refer

This manuscript includes (1) a narrative review of Zinc as an essential nutrient for fetal and neonatal growth and brain growth and development and (2) a scoping review of studies assessing the effects of Zinc supplementation on survival, growth, brain growth, and neurodevelopment in neonates. Very preterm infants and small for gestational age infants are at risk for Zinc deficiency. Zinc deficiency can cause several complications including periorificial lesions, delayed wound healing, hair loss, diarrhea, immune deficiency, growth failure with stunting, and brain atrophy and dysfunction. Zinc

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Human growth hormone (GH) has been successfully used in children with GH deficiency (GHD). However, there are few published data on the effect of GH in Taiwanese children with GHD.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study to identify factors influencing the effect of GH therapy on ethnic Chinese children with GHD in Taiwan. Idiopathic GHD can be classified into isolated GHD (IGHD) and multiple pituitary hormone deficiency (MPHD). The study looked at the effect of GH on the auxological, biochemical, and imaging parameters of 51 patients (13 girls and 38 boys) in t

A 6 years male child was referred to our Endocrinology clinic with complaints of failure to thrive and he displayed the characteristic features of Russell Silver Syndrome which included short stature, relative macrocephaly, triangular facies and bilateral clinodactyly. He had a birth weight of 2.14 kg and an expected target height of 170 cm. He was subjected to a hormonal analysis which revealed a normal thyroid profile, but low serum markers of growth namely IGF-1=68 ng/ml (52-297 ng/ml) and basal growth hormone (GH) (1.5 μg/l). No defects were detected on MRI of the sella. Therefore a growth

The cysteine-rich protein (CRP) family is a subgroup of LIM domain proteins. CRP1, which cross-links actin filaments to make actin bundles, is the only CRP family member expressed in the CNS with little known about its function in nerve cells. Here, we report that CRP1 colocalizes with actin in the filopodia of growth cones in cultured rat hippocampal neurons. Knockdown of CRP1 expression by short hairpin RNA interference results in inhibition of filopodia formation and dendritic growth in neurons. Overexpression of CRP1 increases filopodia formation and neurite branching, which require its ac

BACKGROUND: Several therapeutic trials have been conducted over the past decade to evaluate the role of exogenous growth hormone (GH) as a means of correcting the growth deficiency seen in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Early studies showed the benefit of GH treatment with respect to final height in patients with JIA. Of 13 patients receiving GH, 84% (11 patients) achieved a final height within their target range compared with only 22% (4 of 18 patients) of untreated patients. There are, however, factors that may limit the statural gains achieved with GH therapy including s

Differential growth is the phenomenon whereby growth plates in the same individual at the same time all have uniquely different axial growth velocities. Differential growth is clearly present in the adolescent skeleton. In this study we ask two questions. When and by what pattern does the phenomenon of differential growth begin? Second, to what extent are the development of differential growth velocities correlated with changes in hypertrophic chondrocyte volume and/or with changes in chondrocytic production/turnover? Four growth plates (proximal and distal radial; proximal and distal tibial)

BACKGROUND: Growth disorders are common in children with sickle cell disease (SCD). The etiology for growth disturbances in this population appears to be multifactorial. Recent evidence suggests abnormalities in the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and IGF binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) axis may play a role.
OBJECTIVE: To measure GH levels through provocative stimulation in a group of patients with SCD with growth failure, and to evaluate response to treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Growth records were reviewed of 79 children with sickle cell hemoglobinopathies to identi

Intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR), caused by maternal undernutrition or placental insufficiency, is usually associated with disproportionately large reductions in the growth of some fetal organs and tissues (thymus, liver, spleen, thyroid) and impaired cellular development of other tissues (small intestine, secondary wool follicles, skeletal muscle). Growth of other tissues, most notably brain, is relatively unimpaired. In our restudy of postnatal consequences of IUGR in the offspring of prolific ewes, growth-retarded newborn lambs tended to be hypoglycaemic and showed sluggish postnatal

OBJECTIVE: Pubertal growth contributes to 15-18% of adult height. A blunted pubertal peak could contribute to short adult height in short children born with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR).
DESIGN AND METHODS: Pubertal growth, from onset of puberty to final height, was investigated in 75 short IUGR children: 47 were treated with recombinant human growth hormone (GH) (tx) before pubertal onset (mean dose: 0.4 IU/kg/week); 28 were not treated (no-tx). They were compared with 98 normal children.
RESULTS: Puberty occurred later in IUGR children than in controls (boys 14.2 +/- 1 years vs.

Serial cephalometric and panoramic radiographs from a mixed longitudinal group of 28 subjects with Turner syndrome (TS), age 4.4-19.0 years, were evaluated for annualized growth increments of the craniofacial complex and dental development and were compared with a longitudinal control group from the Burlington growth study. The short and retrognathic face characteristic of the syndrome was due largely to the increased cranial base angle, decreased posterior face height, and decreased mandibular length, all of which were significantly different from the controls. Although increases in statural

It is commonly agreed that birth weight is associated with blood pressure in adults. However, not much is known about birth length, ponderal index, and early postnatal growth, whose effects on adult blood pressure, if any, can affect the interpretation of the birth weight-blood pressure association. This study examined the association between fetal growth, early postnatal growth, and blood pressure in Chinese adults. One hundred twenty-two subjects born in Hong Kong in 1967 were followed from birth to age 30 years. Multiple linear regression was used to analyze the association between size at

1. Growth patterns of the whole body, eviscerated carcases, breast muscle, leg and thigh muscles and abdominal fat pads were compared in 4 lines (Lines A, B, C, and D) of male ducks selected for market weight (n = 1305) using growth curve analysis, allometric growth analysis and repeated measure analysis. At 49 d of age, Line A was heaviest, followed by Line B, Line C and Line D. 2. Ducks were fed ad libitum under 24-h lighting and 12 or 24 ducks were killed to determine body, carcase, breast-muscle, leg and thigh-muscle, and abdominal fat weights at time points from hatching until 53 d of age

OBJECTIVE: Growth deficiency is commonly seen in polytransfused beta-thalassaemia patients, especially in adolescence. It is not completely dependent on the lack of their pubertal growth spurt. GH impairment at different levels (hypothalamic or pituitary) and/or a reduced IGF-1 synthesis have been suggested the main causes of stunted growth in these patients. We evaluated the relationship between GH reserve and growth in short beta-thalassaemia patients.
PATIENTS: Twenty-nine short patients (height < -1.8 SDS for chronological age) were divided into two groups (low and normal responders) on t

Endochondral ossification is a major mode of bone that occurs as chondrocytes undergo proliferation, hypertrophy, cell death, and osteoblastic replacement. We have identified a role for fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR-3) in this process by disrupting the murine Fgfr-3 gene to produce severe and progressive bone dysplasia with enhanced and prolonged endochondral bone growth. This growth is accompanied by expansion of proliferating and hypertrophic chondrocytes within the cartilaginous growth plate. Thus, FGFR-3 appears to regulate endochondral ossification by an essentially negative m

Both in animal-experimental and in clinical research it has been demonstrated that early, extensive surgery on cleft palate patients has a growth inhibitory effect. Study of skulls of non-operated cleft palate patients seems to confirm this experience. A method of conservative, multidisciplinary treatment of cleft palate patients for which the application of the 'growth stimulator' is essential, is described briefly. During 18 years experience has been obtained with this therapy. It is very important that treatment starts as soon as possible after birth. After the introduction of the treatment

Increased levels of endogenous growth hormone (GH) during childhood and adolescence result in a significant elevation of final height both in humans and in laboratory animals. We investigated the growth promoting effects of the administration of pharmacological doses of human GH (25 to 100 IU/kg/day) in 7 rats with severe intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) due to artificially induced embryofetal alcohol syndrome (EFAS). Such doses of GH led to a marked growth spurt during the time of administration (14 days) exceeding the expected daily length and weight gain significantly, compared to pla

Unilateral hip excision arthroplasty in lambs resulted in osteochondrosis developing in distal tibiae and metatarsi of the contralateral pelvic limb. The physeal cartilage of distal tibiae and metatarsi developed clefts which probably represent shear failure. The histopathology of the meataphyseal defects differed between the medial and lateral growth plate sectors. Medially, the lesions were typical of physeal osteochondrosis in other mammals, with disorganized chondrocyte columns, cell death and matrix necrosis. Laterally, metaphyseal defects were predominantly fibrous, and islands of bone f

In order to identify factors important in the growth of adipose tissue, four groups of children were studied. Infants of gestational diabetic mothers demonstrated increased fat cell numbers as early as age two months, a finding which accelerated with increasing age, and which was associated with persistent hyperinsulinemia and increasing obesity. Children with growth hormone deficiency increased their adipose cell number following treatment with exogenous hormone. Patients with the Prader-Willi syndrome, who developed obesity after the age of two, did so primarily via increases in fat cell siz
