INTRODUCTION: Recent research has expanded the spectrum of genetic causes for growth failures. Patients with CUL3-related neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) present with variable phenotypic manifestations, and growth retardation has been observed in some of these patients.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present two families with NDD and variable degree of short stature. The proband in Family 1 had short stature (-3.0 SDS), developmental delay, learning difficulties, and autism spectrum disorder. Whole exome sequencing (WES) revealed a novel likely pathogenic heterozygous nonsense CUL3 variant c.420C>G,

Bone turnover markers (BTMs) are biomedical indicators used to assess the bone metabolism processes reflecting the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. During childhood and adolescence, bone metabolism is highly active, leading to distinct levels and trends of BTMs compared with those of adults. BTMs correlate significantly with age, gender and environmental factors, making them valuable for evaluating bone health and developmental trajectories in pediatric populations. Due to the non-invasive characters and dynamic monitoring capabilities, BTMs are increasingly employed in research and cl

Since the new millennium, biblical scholars have begun to reread certain writings in the Hebrew Bible through the concepts of post-traumatic stress disorder and post-traumatic growth. Some scholars believe such a reading is legitimate, whereas others think it problematic, and still, others hold a midway perspective. This article argues for the midway, the position that accepts the applicability of the Hebrew Bible to today's psychological concepts but calls for caution. Because ancient Israelites reacted to traumatic events and distinguished the human mind from the body like modern people, it

Background and objectives: To assess whether placental growth factor (PlGF) levels may have a predictive value for the onset of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy. Materials and Methods: This single-center retrospective analysis was conducted at the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment in Obstetrics and Gynecology "Dr. Shterev", Sofia, Bulgaria, from December 2017 to December 2019. Using pregnant women's electronic records, we analyzed and compared the data of 412 women diagnosed with GDM and 250 women without evidence for carbohydrate disorders.

BACKGROUND: Kidney transplantation (KT) is a life-saving therapy for kidney failure. However, KT recipients can suffer from debilitating depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicide. In contrast to PTSD, post-traumatic growth (PTG) is a positive psychologic change in response to a challenging situation. PTG has been studied in other chronic diseases, but less is known about its role in the setting of KT. We sought to elucidate the prevalence, predictors, and the effect of PTSD and PTG on post-KT outcomes. We also considered the roles of benefit finding and resilience.

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the changing role of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) signaling in the healthy and diseased synovial joint and spine. HGF is a multifunctional growth factor that, like its specific receptor c-Met, is widely expressed in several bone and joint tissues. HGF has profound effects on cell survival and proliferation, matrix metabolism, inflammatory response, and neurotrophic action. HGF plays an important role in normal bone and cartilage turnover. Changes in HGF/c-Met have also been linked to pathophysiological changes in degenerative joint disease

Dynamic changes in metabolism have long been understood as critical for both the initiation and maintenance of innate and adaptive immune responses. A number of recent advances have clarified details of how metabolic pathways can specifically affect cellular function in immune cells. Critical to this understanding is ongoing study of the congenital disorders of glycosylation and other genetic disorders of metabolism that lead to altered immune function in humans. While there are a number of immune phenotypes associated with metabolic derangements caused by single gene disorders, several geneti

To date, no curative psychopharmacologic treatment exists for the core symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as well as for schizophrenia. Bumatenide is a specific antagonist of the first isoform of the Na-K-Cl cotransporter (NKCC1). It is usually used as a diuretic but may also promote a decrease in intraneuronal chloride ion concentration leading to hyperpolarization in neuronal membrane and subsequent decrease in neuronal hyperexcitability. This physiologic effect has been considered to be behind the relative efficacy of bumetanide in improving symptoms of ASD and, to a lesser extent,

BACKGROUND: Approximately 8% of individuals with private health insurance in the United States have substance use disorders (SUDs), but in 2009 only 0.4% of all private insurance spending was on SUDs. The objective of this study was to determine if changes that occurred between 2009 and 2012 - such as more generous SUD benefits, an epidemic of opioid use disorders, and slow recovery from a recession - were associated with greater use of SUD treatment.
METHODS: Data were from the 2004-2012 Truven Health Analytics MarketScan(®) Commercial Claims and Encounters Database. This database is represe

Mild facial asymmetries are common in typical growth patterns. Therefore, detection of disordered facial growth patterns in individuals characterized by asymmetries is preferably accomplished by reference to the typical variation found in the general population rather than to some ideal of perfect symmetry, which rarely exists. This presents a challenge in developing an asymmetry assessment tool that is applicable, without modification, to detect both mild and severe facial asymmetries. In this paper we use concepts from geometric morphometrics to obtain robust and spatially-dense asymmetry as

BACKGROUND: Although some previous studies have suggested that posttraumatic growth (PTG) is comprised of several factors with different properties, few have examined both the association between PTG and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and between PTG and resilience, focusing on each of the factors of PTG. This study aimed to examine the hypothesis that some factors of PTG, such as personal strength, relate to resilience, whereas other factors, such as appreciation of life, relate to PTSD symptoms among Japanese motor vehicle accident (MVA) survivors.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study

Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) increases a risk of perinatal complications and may carry a negative influence on a later baby's mental and physical development. Poorer function revealed by many vital organs seems to be the effect of their lower mass and their relative immaturity. In the first part of a paper the authors discuss two groups of factors thought to be responsible for IUGR. The first one has been related to the fetal status-genetic anomalies, other primary developmental defects and different growth patterns.

1. A congenital disturbance of hair growth belonging to the "trichorrhexis nodosa" group is described. Clinically, abnormal hair fragility since birth was the leading symptom. There was no detectable amino-aciduria. 2. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) reveals localized alterations of the hair shafts. These are irregularities of the cuticular pattern, partial fractures of the cortical filament bundles, and complete fractures with broom-like splintering of the hair ends. 3. There is no generally accepted definition of the symptom or the disease of "trichorrhexis nodosa". Further SEM analys

OBJECTIVES: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) when combined with fetal growth restriction (FGR) increase the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes (APO). This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of fetal hemodynamic indicators for APO and to construct a nomogram for individualized risk assessment in pregnancies with HDP and FGR.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 198 pregnant women with HDP and FGR in the training set and 85 patients in the validation set, admitted between January 2022 and December 2024. Demographic, clinical, biochemical (uric acid, free thyroxine [F

Telomere biology disorders (TBDs) are genetic diseases caused by defective telomere maintenance. TBD patients often develop bone marrow failure and have an increased risk of myeloid neoplasms. To better understand the factors underlying hematopoietic outcomes in TBD, we comprehensively evaluated acquired genetic alterations in hematopoietic cells from 166 pediatric and adult TBD patients. Of these patients, 47.6% (28.8% of children, 56.1% of adults) had clonal hematopoiesis. Recurrent somatic alterations involved telomere maintenance genes (7.6%), spliceosome genes (10.4%, mainly U2AF1 p.S34),

Children with monogenic neurodevelopmental disorders often grow abnormally. Gene-specific growth charts would be useful but require large samples to construct them using the conventional LMS method. We transformed anthropometry to British 1990 reference z-scores for 328 UK and 264 international individuals with ANKRD11, ARID1B, ASXL3, DDX3X, KMT2A, or SATB2-related disorders, and modelled mean and standard deviation (SD) of the z-scores as gene-specific linear age trends adjusted for sex. Assuming the same skewness in the reference and rare disease distributions, we then back-transformed the m
