Stress During Development of Experimental Endometriosis Influences Nerve Growth and Disease Progression.

PURPOSE: We have previously shown that stress prior to induction worsens clinical presentation and inflammatory parameters in a rat model of endometriosis. This study was designed to examine whether stress during the development of endometriosis can affect the growth of endometriotic implants through nerve growth and immune alterations. METHODS: Endometriosis was surgically induced in female Sprague-Dawley rats by suturing uterine horn implants onto the small intestine mesentery. Two weeks later, one group of rats (endo-stress) was subjected to a 10-day swim stress protocol. Controls had no s

Lipid droplet growth and adipocyte development: mechanistically distinct processes connected by phospholipids.

The differentiation of preadipocytes into mature adipocytes is accompanied by the growth and formation of a giant, unilocular lipid droplet (LD). Mechanistically however, LD growth and adipogenesis are two different processes. Recent studies have uncovered a number of proteins that are able to regulate both LD dynamics and adipogenesis, such as SEIPIN, LIPIN and CDP-Diacylglycerol Synthases. It appears that phospholipids, phosphatidic acid in particular, play a critical role in both LD budding/growth and adipocyte development. This review summarizes recent advances, and aims to provide a bette

Influence of complex childhood diseases on variation in growth and skeletal development.

The study of human growth and skeletal development by human biologists is framed by the larger theoretical concerns regarding the underpinnings of population variation and human evolution. This unique perspective is directly relevant to the assessment of child health and well-being at the individual and group level, as well as the construction of growth charts. Environmental, behavioral (nutrition and physical activity), and disease-related factors can prevent attainment of full genetic potential for growth. Undernutrition is most often the cause of growth faltering and poor skeletal developme

Challenges in the development and growth of small for gestational age newborns.

Being born with low birth weight (less than 2.500 gr) is considered a public health problem, with an overall world rate of about 14%. Low birth weight may result from a premature birth (< 37 weeks of gestation), from several causes of intra-uterine growth restriction or from a combination of both. Areas covered: We described how, if weight and/or length at birth are not adequate for gestational age, the newborn is considered 'small for gestational age' and may present several growth, hormonal and developmental peculiarities, possibly due to the growth restriction developed during pregnancy. Fibroblast growth factor receptor signaling in kidney and lower urinary tract development.

Fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) and FGF ligands are highly expressed in the developing kidney and lower urinary tract. Several classic studies showed many effects of exogenous FGF ligands on embryonic renal tissues in vitro and in vivo. Another older landmark publication showed that mice with a dominant negative Fgfr fragment had severe renal dysplasia. Together, these studies revealed the importance of FGFR signaling in kidney and lower urinary tract development. With the advent of modern gene targeting techniques, including conditional knockout approaches, several publications hav

Intrauterine growth restriction and prematurity influence regulatory T cell development in newborns.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship of birth weight and gestational age with regulatory T cells (Tregs) in cord blood of human newborns. METHODS: Cord blood mononuclear cells (CBMCs) of 210 newborns were analyzed using flow cytometry to identify Tregs (CD3(+), CD4(+), CD25(high), FoxP3(high)) and measure FoxP3 mean fluorescence intensity (MFI). Suppressive index (SI) was calculated as FoxP3 MFI per Treg. RESULTS: Mode of delivery had no significant effect on Tregs at birth. Term babies with growth restriction had fewer Tregs than their appropriate weight counterp

Disorders of childhood growth and development: failure to thrive versus short stature.

Failure to thrive (FTT) describes retarded growth in height and weight, whereas short stature (SS) involves comparison of a child or adolescent's height to that of a reference group or to his or her own height across time. To identify either condition in infants, children, and adolescents, the family physician should focus on accurate measurement of length/height and weight as well as careful plotting and assessment of the rate of linear growth and weight gain based on World Health Organization standards (from birth to 2 years) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention charts (from age 2

Connective tissue growth factor is required for normal follicle development and ovulation.

Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is a cysteine-rich protein the synthesis and secretion of which are hypothesized to be selectively regulated by activins and other members of the TGF-β superfamily. To investigate the in vivo roles of CTGF in female reproduction, we generated Ctgf ovarian and uterine conditional knockout (cKO) mice. Ctgf cKO mice exhibit severe subfertility and multiple reproductive defects including disrupted follicle development, decreased ovulation rates, increased numbers of corpus luteum, and smaller but functionally normal uterine horns. Steroidogenesis is disrupted

Impact of fatty acid status on growth and neurobehavioural development in humans.

Many studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) supplementation during the perinatal period on the growth and neurobehavioural development of young children. Most of these intervention trials have involved infants from high-income countries, and a significant proportion have investigated supplementation of infant formulas. Generally, supplementation of infant formula for preterm rather than term infants has demonstrated more consistent, positive effects on aspects of neurobehavioural development, while the growth of both term and

Disease progression in Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome: impact on growth and development.

OBJECTIVES: Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome is a rare and uniformly fatal segmental "premature aging" disease that affects a variety of organ systems. We sought to more clearly define the bone and weight abnormalities in patients with progeria as potential outcome parameters for prospective clinical trials. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected and analyzed longitudinal medical information, both retrospectively and prospectively, from a total of 41 children with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome spanning 14 countries, from the Progeria Research Foundation Medical and Research Database at

Development of a WHO growth reference for school-aged children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To construct growth curves for school-aged children and adolescents that accord with the WHO Child Growth Standards for preschool children and the body mass index (BMI) cut-offs for adults. METHODS: Data from the 1977 National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)/WHO growth reference (1-24 years) were merged with data from the under-fives growth standards' cross-sectional sample (18-71 months) to smooth the transition between the two samples. State-of-the-art statistical methods used to construct the WHO Child Growth Standards (0-5 years), i.e. the Box-Cox power exponential (BCPE) m

Transforming growth factor-beta pathway: role in pancreas development and pancreatic disease.

The pancreas is a complex exocrine and endocrine gland that controls many homeostatic functions. The exocrine pancreas produces and secretes digestive enzymes, whereas, the endocrine pancreas produces four distinct hormones, chief among them being the glucose regulating hormone-insulin. Diabetes, pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer are some of the main afflictions that result from pancreas dysfunction. Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) proteins are central regulators of pancreas cell function, and have key roles in pancreas development and pancreatic disease. Since expression levels an

Transforming growth factor beta-SMAD2 signaling regulates aortic arch innervation and development.

Aortic arch interruptions in humans and animal models are mainly caused by aberrant development of the fourth pharyngeal arch artery. Little is known about the maturation of this vessel during normal and abnormal development, which is the subject of this study. Tgfbeta2 knockout mice that present with fourth artery defects have been associated with defective neural crest cell migration. In this study, we concentrated on pharyngeal arch artery development during developmental days 12.5 to 18.5, focusing on neural crest cell migration using a Wnt1-Cre by R26R neural crest cell reporter mouse. The effect of light intensity on growth and development of turkey toms.

1. The effect of light intensities from 10 to 700 lux on the performance of 5 to 18 week-old turkey males was studied in 2 trials. 2. Body weight of 18 week-old turkeys, in both experiments, was highest under the lowest light intensity This coincided with higher weight gain and lower food intake, which resulted in significantly better food conversion efficiency 3. Light intensity affected heart muscle weight but not weight of breast muscle, abdominal fat or testis as proportions of body weight. 4. The decline in plasma T3 concentration with age differed from other treatments at the low light i

Growth and development four years after treatment for the Trichuris dysentery syndrome.

A follow-up study is reported of 18 children 4 y after treatment for the Trichuris dysentery syndrome (TDS) and matched control children. The TDS children were initially severely stunted and had extremely low developmental levels. They showed catch-up in height of 1.9 z-scores even though they remained in very poor environments. Their intelligence quotients, school achievement and cognitive function remained significantly lower than those of the controls. Controlling for their earlier developmental levels, the TDS children showed a small improvement in mental development relative to the contro

Testosterone treatment in adolescent boys with constitutional delay of growth and development.

Administration of androgens to adolescent boys with constitutional delay in growth has been highly controversial. One hundred forty-eight adolescent boys with constitutional delay of growth and puberty with a mean age of 14.3 +/- 0.7 years were treated with testosterone enanthate 100 mg intramuscularly each month for 6 months. Growth parameters, sexual maturation, and circulating concentrations of testosterone and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) were compared with those for 50 age-matched adolescent boys with constitutional delay of growth and puberty with a mean age of 14.1 +/- 0.9 years

Testosterone treatment in adolescent boys with constitutional delay in growth and development.

The administration of androgens to adolescent boys with constitutional delay in growth has been highly controversial because of the possibility of premature epiphyseal closure and reduced final height. We have treated 15 such boys with a mean (+/- SD) age of 14.1 +/- 1.0 years and a mean initial height of 142.2 +/- 8.6 cm (range, 127.1 to 156.2). The boys received monthly intramuscular injections of testosterone enanthate (50 mg) for 1.2 +/- 0.3 years. The mean height velocity rose from the 3rd percentile for mean skeletal age to above the 90th percentile, where it remained throughout treatmen

Effect of in utero exposure to anticonvulsants on craniofacial development and growth.

It has been widely reported that some children exposed to anticonvulsants in utero have a characteristic pattern of craniofacial anomalies including a broad, low nasal bridge with a short upturned nose, wide mouth, low set ears, epicanthal folds, and ocular hypertelorism, while others show no evidence of craniofacial abnormalities. The purpose of this paper is to define the craniofacial features in nine exposed children using anthropometric measurements and frontal and lateral cephalometric radiographs. These children were identified at birth as part of a prospective study of infants exposed t
