Antiandrogen induced cryptorchidism in the pig is associated with failed gubernacular regression and epididymal malformations.

PURPOSE: Can antiandrogens cause cryptorchidism in an animal model with a strip-like gubernaculum? If so, what anatomical abnormalities are associated with cryptorchidism? MATERIALS AND METHODS: Timed pregnant sows received the antiandrogen flutamide during defined gestational intervals. Fetal pigs were evaluated for the presence of testicular undescent and for morphological paratesticular abnormalities at 110 days of gestation (birth). RESULTS: Of 180 testes 84 (47%) were undescended and 9 (5%) were in the abdominal cavity. No undescended testis (0 of 200 testes) were found in control anima

A new gonad-infecting species of Philometra Costa, 1845 (Nematoda: Philometridae) from the marine fish Terapon jarbua (Forsskål) (Terapontidae) off the eastern coast of India.

A new nematode species, Philometra terapontis n. sp. (Philometridae), is described from male and female specimens found in the ovary of the jarbua terapon Terapon jarbua (Forsskål) (Terapontidae, Perciformes) from the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India. Based on light and scanning electron microscopical examination, the new species differs from most other gonad-infecting Philometra spp. in the length of the spicules (105-114 μm), a gubernaculum with dorsal, lamella-like structures and a distinct protuberance on its distal end, and a U-shaped, dorsally uninterrupted caudal mound in th

Morphological, molecular and biological characterization of Mehdinema alii (Nematoda: Diplogasterida) from the decorated cricket (Gryllodes sigillatus).

The nematode Mehdinema alii was recovered from the decorated cricket Gryllodes sigillatus (Walker). Morphometric comparisons are presented from 3 populations. The nematode is characterized by dense arrays of spines on the cuticle of the anterior half of the body and a highly elongate, tubular stoma with a dorsal denticle in the glottoid region. Females have a protruding vulva. Young females are amphidelphic, but the anterior ovary disappears in older females bearing multiple developing juveniles. The male is monorchic with asymmetrically placed genital papillae, distally fused spicules, and a

Testicular descent revisited: a micro-computed tomography study in fetal rats.

PURPOSE: There is a long history of research dealing with the embryology of the testicular descent. However, important aspects like the role of the gubernaculum and the development of the processus vaginalis peritonei are not understood. Micro-computed tomography (µCT) is an established tool for anatomical studies in rodents. Our study applied µCT imaging to visualize the testicular descent in rats and focused on the role of the gubernacular bulb and the development of the processus vaginalis peritonei. METHODS: Rats from embryonic day 15 (ED15) to ED21 and newborns (N0) were fixed and dried

An extremely rare case of indirect hernia type co-existing with testicular ectopia.

We present an extremely rare case of inguinal hernia coexisting with testicular ectopia in a child. Male infant 9.5 month old presented with an empty scrotum and the ipsilateral intravaginal testis lying in a high iliac crest position. When crying a moving right inguinal bulge appeared on clinical examination. This grew bigger in moments of increased abdominal pressure and seemed to move upwards towards the right ileac crest. No abdominal wall defect could be palpated. At operation a large hernia sac fixed in the area of the right iliac crest was identified. Adjacent was the fixation point of

Evaluation and management of the infant with cryptorchidism.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Normal testicular descent is now recognized to occur in two steps with the first, transabdominal stage controlled by insulin-like hormone 3. The second, inguinoscrotal stage is controlled by androgens, mostly indirectly via the genitofemoral nerve, which appears to direct the migration of the gubernaculum to the scrotum. Undescended testis (UDT) is multifactorial, with only some of the genes identified. This review highlights recent developments that are leading to changes in practice. RECENT FINDINGS: There is an emerging consensus among pediatric surgeons and urologists a

The regulation of testicular descent and the effects of cryptorchidism.

The first half of this review examines the boundary between endocrinology and embryonic development, with the aim of highlighting the way hormones and signaling systems regulate the complex morphological changes to enable the intra-abdominal fetal testes to reach the scrotum. The genitoinguinal ligament, or gubernaculum, first enlarges to hold the testis near the groin, and then it develops limb-bud-like properties and migrates across the pubic region to reach the scrotum. Recent advances show key roles for insulin-like hormone 3 in the first step, with androgen and the genitofemoral nerve inv

Description of non-type Seinura winchesi from mushroom compost (Nematoda: Seinuridae).

Non-type material identified as Seinura winchesi, and deposited in the collection of the Nematology Department, Rothamsted Experimental Station, England, is described. The material was collected from mushroom compost in Leeds, England, in 1957. Females of this population are characterized by a set-off head, knobless stylet (20-21 microm), two rows of oogonia-oocytes, and absence of a postuterine sac. The median bulb is oblong and, at times, is constricted in the middle. The body is 565 to 675 microm long and tapers posteriorly to a pointed terminus. The cuticle is finely annulated, and there a

Exogenous calcitonin gene-related peptide causes gubernacular development in neonatal (Tfm) mice with complete androgen resistance.

It has been proposed that testicular descent is controlled indirectly by androgens acting on the central nervous system to mediate migration of the gubernaculum to the scrotum. Accumulating evidence suggests that the genitofemoral nerve may release a newly described neurotransmitter, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) to stimulate gubernacular motility during migration. This study aimed to determine whether exogenous CGRP could stimulate gubernacular migration in mice with complete androgen resistance (testicular feminization mouse [Tfm]). CGRP was injected into the right groin of neonatal

The undescended testis. Hormonal and surgical management.

Cryptorchidism is the most common disorder of sexual differentiation in males, with an incidence of 3.4 per cent in the term newborn, decreasing to 0.8 per cent at 1 year of age. The mechanisms of normal testicular descent are multifactorial and include an intact hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis, as well as a normal gubernaculum and epididymis. In boys with cryptorchidism, the testes demonstrate degenerative changes histologically as early as 1 to 2 years of age. Both testes may be affected, even with a unilateral undescended testis. Two new species of Paramphimonhystrella (Nematoda, Monhysterida, Xyalidae) from the deep-sea sediments in the Western Pacific Ocean and adjacent shelf seafloor.

Two new species of marine nematodes, Paramphimonhystrella longispicula sp. n. in the deep-sea sediments from the Philippine Sea in the tropical Western Pacific Ocean with the water depth of 3920-5176 m and P. eurystoma sp. n. in the shelf seafloor from the East China Sea with the water depth of 55-64 m, are described. Both species possess long and slender spicules, which are present only in the congener P. barbula, a species discovered from the continental slope of New Zealand. Paramphimonhystrella longispicula sp. n. can be easily distinguished from P. barbula by the relatively broader buccal

Diagnoses and Treatment of Acquired Undescended Testes: A Review.

Acquired undescended testes were once considered a sporadic disease. In recent years, reports suggest that they are not uncommon, with an incidence rate about 3 times that of congenital undescended testes. The etiology of acquired undescended testes remains inconclusive, clinical diagnostic standards are unclear, and treatment approaches are still controversial. There is ongoing debate about the mechanism of testicular ascent. The prevailing view is that acquired undescended testes occur due to the partial absorption of the gubernaculum, which forms part of the parietal peritoneum. The residua

Morphological and Genetic Characterization of the Poorly Known Species Subulura chinensis Schwartz, 1926 (Nematoda: Ascaridida) from Athene noctua (Scopoli) (Strigiformes: Strigidae).

INTRODUCTION: Subulura chinensis Schwartz, 1926 is a hitherto poorly known nematode species. The morphology of S. chinensis has not been sufficiently well described. In addition, the molecular data from species of the Subuluroidea are extremely limited. METHODS: The detailed morphology of S. chinensis was studied using light microscopy and, for the first time, scanning electron microscopy, based on newly collected specimens from the little owl Athene noctua (Scopoli) (Strigiformes: Strigidae) in China. Is the ovary in an inguinal hernia 'descended' like a testis or not?

BACKGROUND/AIM: How testes descend through the inguinal canal is well described, but how the ovaries appear inside an inguinal hernia remains controversial. We reviewed the literature to determine whether ovarian 'descent' has been described. METHODS: The English literature from 1950 to 2014 was reviewed via PubMed, Medline and Web of Science to identify papers describing an ovary in the hernia sac: reports were examined to find whether the ovary prolapsed or 'descended', and the anatomy of its supporting ligaments, cranial suspensory ligament (CSL) and round ligament (female gubernaculum, RL

Epidemiology and pathogenesis of cryptorchidism.

Prospective clinical studies have shown that the prevalence of cryptorchidism among boys with birth weight > or =2500 g has increased in UK from 2.7 to 4.1% between the 1950s and the 1980s and in Denmark from 1.8 to 8.4% between the 1950s and the 1990s. In similar studies performed in different countries during the last two decades the figures have varied from 2.1 to 8.4%. Due to spontaneous descent of the testes lower figures, i.e. between 0.9 and 1.8% have been described at 3 months. Acquired cryptorchidism contributes to the increase in the rate of cryptorchidism in school-aged children. Te
