INTRODUCTION: Acute type 3b injuries of the hamstring muscle complex (HMC) are prevalent in sports, often lead to prolonged recovery, and demonstrate a high recurrence. Conservative rehabilitation is standard, and adjunct therapies such as radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT) may offer additional benefits.
SOURCES OF DATA: This randomized controlled trial, with blinding of patients and assessors, included 36 semi-professional athletes with ultrasound-confirmed acute type 3b HMC injuries. Participants received either real or sham rESWT in combination with an 8-week structured rehab

Hamstring injuries are common in field sport athletes. Eccentric strength training of the hamstring muscles is an integral component of rehabilitation programs. The Askling L-Protocol comprises three exercises [extender; diver; glider] that load the hamstrings during eccentric activity. When compared to a conventional exercise-based rehabilitation program, the Askling L-Protocol has been shown to reduce the time to return to sport following hamstring injury and prevalence of injury recurrence. Nevertheless, the mechanisms behind its efficacy have yet to be studied. In this work, we conducted a

PURPOSE: To describe the perceived importance of suggested hamstring injury risk factors according to chief medical officers (CMOs) of European women's professional football clubs. A secondary objective was to compare if these perceptions differed between teams with a lower-than-average and higher-than-average hamstring injury burden.
METHODS: The CMOs of eleven European professional women's football clubs were initially asked to suggest modifiable risk factors for hamstring injury. These risk factors were rated in according with their perceived importance on a 5-graded Likert scale. Particip

BACKGROUND: The British Athletics Muscle Injury Classification describes acute muscle injuries and their anatomical site within muscle based on MRI parameters of injury extent. It grades injuries from 0 to 4 and classifies location based on a myofascial (a), musculotendinous (b) or intratendinous (c) description. This is a retrospective cohort study that assessed time to return to full training (TRFT) and injury recurrence in the different British Athletics classifications for hamstring injuries sustained by elite track and field (T&F) athletes over a 4-year period.
METHODS: The electronic me

It is not clear whether the strength or endurance of thigh muscles (quadriceps and hamstring) is positively or negatively correlated with the adduction moment of osteoarthritic knees. This study therefore assessed the relationships between the strength and endurance of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles and adduction moment in osteoarthritic knees and evaluated predictors of the adduction moment. The study cohort comprised 35 patients with unilateral medial osteoarthritis and varus deformity who were candidates for open wedge osteotomy. The maximal torque (60°/sec) and total work (180°/sec)

Intraoperative transcranial motor-evoked potential recordings commonly utilize the belly tendon montage method; however, its reliability in large lower limb muscles such as the quadriceps femoris and hamstring muscles can be limited. We hypothesized that placing the reference electrode on the fibular head (fibular head reference electrode method) would improve waveform clarity and stability compared to belly tendon montage. This retrospective study analyzed 101 patients who underwent transcranial motor-evoked potential monitoring during spinal surgery at Nagoya University Hospital from October

INTRODUCTION: According to the concept of biotensegrity, the whole body consists of fascial lines. The relationship between muscles and fascia is important to ensure full and proper range of motion. This study investigated the effect of hamstring flexibility on cervical range of motion and deep neck flexor muscle endurance. The aim was to explore the relationship between the hamstring muscles and neck region in the myofascial tensegrity network.
METHOD: Sixty healthy participants with a median age of 22.0 years (24 male, 36 female) were included. Hamstring flexibility was categorized as "norm

Muscle injury classification systems for hamstring injuries have evolved to use anatomy and imaging information to aid management and prognosis. However, classification systems lack reliability and validity data and are not specific to individual hamstring muscles, potentially missing parameters vital for sport-specific and activity-specific decision making. A narrative evidence review was conducted followed by a modified Delphi study to build an international consensus on best-practice decision-making for the classification of hamstring injuries. This comprised a digital information gathering

Proximal hamstring tears are among the most common injuries afflicting athletes and middle-aged individuals. Sciatic nerve compression after a proximal hamstring injury, which can occur due to scar formation and subsequent irritation or compression of the nerve, is an infrequent but severe complication with few cases documented in the literature. No evidence is available about the optimal treatment for sciatic nerve symptoms after proximal hamstring injuries. In this case report, we present two cases involving patients primarily treated conservatively at another institution after suffering fro

OBJECTIVE: Hamstring shortness is prevalent among soccer players and is associated with an increased risk of muscle strain and performance deficits. Dynamic stretching and tissue flossing are two interventions used to address flexibility impairments; however, research has predominantly focused on their acute effects. A significant gap remains in understanding their isolated, individual chronic (≥2 weeks) and detraining effects on comprehensive athletic performance. Hence, this randomized controlled trial protocol aims to compare the acute, chronic, and detraining effects of dynamic stretching

BACKGROUND: Late-onset Pompe disease has a characteristic pattern of fat replacement and wasting of especially axial and hamstring muscles. This characteristic pattern of muscle degeneration is still to be explained but could relate to differences in how glycogen is deposited in the different muscles. This cross-sectional observational study investigates the glycogen levels of different muscle groups in young late-onset Pompe subjects and matched controls.
METHODS: 13C-MR Spectroscopy at 7 Tesla field strength was used to quantify glycogen concentration in four muscle groups: the calf, hamstr

Hamstring morphology may play an important role in understanding the aetiology of hamstring injury. Currently, the methods available to capture detailed morphological data such as muscle shape have not been utilized for the hamstring muscles. The aim of this study was to examine the utility of statistical shape modelling (SSM) for describing and comparing hamstring muscle shape in rugby and sprinting athletes. Magnetic resonance images of both thighs of nine elite male rugby players and nine track and field sprinters were analysed. Images were converted to three-dimensional models enabling gen

Recent studies suggest region-specific metabolic activity in hamstring muscles during injury prevention exercises, but the neural representation of this phenomenon is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine whether regional differences are evident in the activity of biceps femoris long head (BFlh) and semitendinosus (ST) muscles during two common injury prevention exercises. Twelve male participants without a history of hamstring injury performed the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) and stiff-leg deadlift (SDL) while BFlh and ST activities were recorded with high-density electromyography

Variations of the anatomy of the hamstring muscle complex are uncommon. In particular, absence of some or all of the hamstring muscles is rarely described in the literature. This report presents a case of absent semimembranosus musculature detected incidentally on knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), then found to be bilateral on MRI of both thighs performed shortly thereafter. Imaging also demonstrated atypical morphologies of the semitendinosus and biceps femoris muscles in both thighs.

Although the hamstring muscles play an important role in running, very little is known about the individual contributions of each hamstring muscle (biceps femorislong head, biceps femorisshort head, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus) toward running economy. As such, our study examined all the muscles in the hamstring to provide insight into which muscles contribute the most to running economy. Such information can provide insight in designing precise exercise training programs for enhancing running performance. Secondary analysis from our cross-sectional study conducted on 23 male recreation

This study reports the histochemical fiber type composition of the human hamstring muscles. Muscle specimens from necropsy specimens were obtained from seven locations in the hamstring, four locations in the quadriceps, and one location in the adductor magnus. The hamstring muscles are shown to have a relatively high proportion of Type II fibers. Type II fibers are more involved with exercise of higher intensity and force production and it is postulated that the hamstrings are capable of high intrinsic force production. The hamstrings are two-joint muscles and are, therefore, subject to increa

Proximal hamstring tendon avulsions are typically sustained during forced hip hyperflexion combined with knee extension. We present 3 cases of athletes with a proximal hamstring tendon avulsion caused by an alternative injury mechanism that also involves a considerable hip abduction component (flexion-abduction injury mechanism). All cases had at least one concurrent injury of the medial thigh muscles, either on the ipsilateral or contralateral side. The 2 elite athletes with this injury mechanism returned to sport at preinjury level relatively quickly. A history of the flexion-abduction mecha
