PURPOSE: Although reference values in healthy subjects have been published for both the International Knee Documentation Committee 2000 subjective knee form (IKDC 2000) and the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), data obtained during the first year after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) are sparse. The aim was to establish patient reference values for both questionnaires at different time points and depending on nine individual patient characteristics during the first year after ACL-R.
METHODS: Prospectively recorded data from a hospital-based registry were r

The current review aims to compare the outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in the female population after patellar-tendon-bone and hamstring grafts. The review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. All original randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies that compared clinical outcomes after female ACL reconstruction using hamstring versus patellar-tendon-bone grafts were included. All clinical outcomes reported by three or more studies were included. Fifteen publications, with 948 female p

PURPOSE: Graft choice for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is crucial, however the optimal graft source remains a topic of controversy. The purpose of this study is to compare subjective and functional patient-reported outcomes (PRO) after single-bundle ACL reconstruction using quadriceps tendon (QT) or hamstring tendon (HT) autografts for single-bundle ACL reconstruction. We hypothesize that there is no difference in patient-reported functional outcomes after ACL reconstruction using either HT- or QT autograft.
METHODS: All data were extracted from a prospectively collected AC

BACKGROUND: A hamstring autograft is commonly used in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR); however, there is evidence to suggest that the tendons harvested may contribute to medial knee instability.
HYPOTHESIS: We tested the hypothesis that the gracilis (G) and semitendinosus (ST) tendons significantly contribute to sagittal, coronal, and/or rotational knee stability in the setting of ACLR with a concurrent partial medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Twelve human cadaveric knees were subject to static forces applied

PURPOSE: In this case-series outcome study, we present our surgical technique for single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with periosteum-enveloping hamstring tendon graft at a minimum of 2 years' follow-up.
METHODS: From 2000 to 2005, ACL reconstruction with a periosteum-enveloping hamstring tendon graft was performed in 368 patients (372 knees). Of those patients, 312 who completed at least 2 years of follow-up were included for analysis. Four-strand periosteum-enveloping hamstring tendon grafts were used for single-bundle reconstruction. Clinical assessments included

BACKGROUND: Regeneration of the semitendinosus and gracilis tendons after harvesting for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction has been reported; however, muscle belly function after tendon regeneration has not been well documented.
HYPOTHESIS: The semitendinosus and gracilis muscles are highly activated during knee flexion if their tendons are well regenerated after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive laboratory study.
METHODS: Hamstring muscle activation in 11 patients who had undergone anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with semitendinosus and

We designed a prospective study to examine the influence of graft type (hamstring or patella tendon) on thigh muscle torque recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. 60 patients undergoing ACL reconstruction, using a hamstring or patella tendon graft, were studied and 45 were followed up to 1 year. Concentric and eccentric quadriceps and hamstring torque were recorded, using an isokinetic dynamometer preoperatively, 6 and 12 months after ACL reconstruction. We found an improvement in all muscle functions in both the operated and unoperated legs during the recovery period. Graft

This narrative review aimed to summarize the consequences of hamstring tendon (HT) harvest for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), with reference to tendon regeneration, knee flexor morphology, clinical assessment of knee flexion strength, and rehabilitation strategies for optimizing recovery. The available evidence suggests that the harvested semitendinosus (ST) and gracilis (GR) tendons regenerate in ∼70-86% of cases after ACLR. Despite tendon regeneration, ACLR with HT autograft results in morphological alterations in both the ST and GR. These changes include tendon elongation

BACKGROUND: Current literature supports the thought that anesthesia and analgesia administered perioperatively for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction have a great influence on time to effective rehabilitation during the first week after hospital discharge.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to answer the research question is there a difference in clinical outcomes between the use of a femoral nerve block with spinal anesthesia versus spinal analgesia alone for people undergoing ACL reconstruction?
METHODS: ACL reconstruction with spinal anesthesia and patient sedation (Group o

BACKGROUND: A soccer-specific balance training has been shown to decrease injury incidence of the anterior cruciate ligament and ankle sprains in randomized controlled trials. However, hamstring injuries and tendinopathy remain significant issues in soccer.
HYPOTHESIS: Proprioceptive training can reduce the incidence of hamstring muscle injuries and tendinopathy in elite soccer. There is a dose-effect relationship between balance training duration and injury incidence.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: Twenty-four elite female soccer players (body mass index, 21.7 +

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the vascular status of autogenous semitendinosus grafts after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in humans using magnetic resonance angiography. Twelve patients (mean age, 24.3 years) who underwent anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with the 4-strand semitendinosus tendon were studied. All patients underwent contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography and second-look arthroscopy in their reconstructed knees on an average of 15.8 months (range 9-22 months) after surgery. Blood vessels to the graft were visualised and contrast medium en

The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is regarded as critical to the normal functioning of the knee, its disruption causing functional impairment. In recent years central third of the patellar tendon (PT) and combined Semitendinosis and gracilis tendons (HT) have become the most frequently used graft types for anterior cruciate knee ligament reconstruction. For the past two decades, the gold standard in ACL reconstructions has been the PT, but increasingly the HT graft has been used. This shift in popularity has occurred for several reasons, including concerns about damaging the knee extensor a
