Longitudinal Assessment and Functional Neuroimaging of Movement Variability Reveal Novel Insights Into Motor Dysfunction in Clinical High Risk for Psychosis.

Motor dysfunction in youth at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis is thought to reflect abnormal neurodevelopment within cortical-subcortical motor circuits and may be important for understanding clinical trajectories of CHR individuals. However, to date, our perspective of brain-behavior relationships has been informed solely by cross-sectional correlational studies linking behavior in the lab to brain structure or respective resting-state network connectivity. Here, we assess movement dysfunction from 2 perspectives: study 1 investigates the longitudinal progression of handwriting variabi

Changes in hemiplegic grasp following distributed repetitive intervention: a case series.

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the efficacy of a distributed model of repetitive and focused intervention on grasp force, and clinical and functional hand measures in persons with chronic hemiplegia and limited hand recovery from self-reported stroke. A case series design was used. Focused repetitive unilateral and bilateral interventions were provided in a distributed manner (three times a week for 6 weeks) to three persons with upper limb hemiplegia of more than 1 year. Data from instrumented grasp force, and clinical and functional measures were obtained at weeks 0, 3, 6

The Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration--3R and teachers' ratings of written language.

For a sample of 73 learning-disabled children, the relationship between scores on the Developmental Test of Visual-motor Integration--3rd Revision and teachers' ratings of writing skills was investigated. After statistically removing the contribution of socioeconomic status, achievement, and intelligence, only handwriting was significantly related to scores on Beery's test. Given the limited diagnostic information provided by the test, psychologists are urged to select other measures in assessing students' writing skills.

Physiotherapy of focal dystonia: a physiotherapist's personal experience.

The approach of the physiotherapist to each form of dystonia is individual and has to be specific. There is not one single method but several strategies related to the different clinical forms. Although there is no standard programme applicable to all forms of cervical dystonia, we can distinguish a number of guidelines for the different clinical forms. In the myoclonic form, emphasis is placed on seeking to immobilize the head, and for the tonic form, on rehabilitating corrector muscles. Physiotherapy and botulinum toxin injections mutually interact in order to reduce the symptoms. Recent stu

Handwritten signatures in neurological and psychiatric disorders: a systematic review with clinical and forensic implications.

BACKGROUND: Signature production represents a complex motor and cognitive behavior, highly automatized and repeated countless times throughout life. It ranks among the most durable graphic forms, often preserved even when writing processes are impaired. Studies examining signature characteristics in clinical cohorts are limited. The available evidence raises questions about its potential as a behavioral marker of neurological and psychiatric disorders. METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA-compliant systematic review up to 4th December 2025 to summarize evidence on how neurological and psychiatric c

Open-label dose-escalation study of oral 1-octanol in patients with essential tremor.

Twenty-one single oral doses of 1-octanol were given to patients with essential tremor (ET) in an open-label dose-escalation study. The drug was well tolerated up to 64 mg/kg. The main side effect was an unusual taste. No overt intoxication was seen. There was evidence for efficacy, with a significant reduction in tremor amplitude as measured by accelerometry and handwriting that was maximal at 2 hours. Higher doses may produce more sustained benefit.

Writing instruction in kindergarten: examining an emerging area of research for children with writing and reading difficulties.

This review examines the literature on how to teach kindergarten children with reading and writing difficulties how to write. Specifically, research on handwriting instruction, spelling instruction, and composition writing is discussed. Due to the limited number of empirical studies on writing that included kindergarten students with diagnosed reading and writing difficulties, selected studies conducted with the full range of kindergarten children, as well as studies conducted in the early elementary grades, are presented to highlight future directions for research.

Essential tremor: treatment with propranolol.

A double-blind trial of propranolol, in a dosage of 120 mg a day, and placebo was conducted in 11 patients with essential tremor. An improvement in tremor was observed in all patients who received propranolol and was most pronounced in the upper extremities. The favorable clinical assessment was further confirmed by improvement in a grooved pegboard test and in the quality of handwriting as evaluated by two "blind" observers. No side effects were encountered. It is concluded that propranolol is at present the best available drug for the treatment of essential tremor.

Does This Patient Have Parkinson Disease or Essential Tremor?

In the elderly patient with tremor, the differential diagnosis is usually between essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson disease (PD). A careful history and examination are the keys to the diagnosis. Essential tremor is a bilateral action tremor of the upper limbs whereas PD begins unilaterally and is a rest tremor. A handwriting sample can usually distinguish PD from ET as the former is small (micrographic) but atremulous whereas writing in ET is tremulous but normal sized. In ET, there are no signs aside from tremor but in PD, the tremor is accompanied by bradykinesia and rigidity.

A generic non-invasive neuromotor interface for human-computer interaction.

Since the advent of computing, humans have sought computer input technologies that are expressive, intuitive and universal. While diverse modalities have been developed, including keyboards, mice and touchscreens, they require interaction with a device that can be limiting, especially in on-the-go scenarios. Gesture-based systems use cameras or inertial sensors to avoid an intermediary device, but tend to perform well only for unobscured movements. By contrast, brain-computer or neuromotor interfaces that directly interface with the body's electrical signalling have been imagined to solve the

Late feature fusion using neural network with voting classifier for Parkinson's disease detection.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is classified as a neurological, progressive illness brought on by cell death in the posterior midbrain. Early PD detection will assist doctors in reducing the disease's consequences. A collection of skilled models that may be applied to regression as well as classification is known as artificial intelligence (AI). PD can be detected using a variety of dataset formats, including text, speech, and picture datasets. For the purpose of classifying Parkinson's disease, this study suggests merging deep with machine learning recognition approaches. The three primary componen

Volume reduction of caudate nucleus is associated with movement coordination deficits in patients with hippocampal atrophy due to perinatal hypoxia-ischaemia.

Acute sentinel hypoxia-ischaemia in neonates can target the hippocampus, mammillary bodies, thalamus, and the basal ganglia. Our previous work with paediatric patients with a history of hypoxia-ischaemia has revealed hippocampal and diencephalic damage that impacts cognitive memory. However, the structural and functional status of other brain regions vulnerable to hypoxia-ischaemia, such as the basal ganglia, has not been investigated in these patients. Furthermore, it is not known whether there are any behavioural sequelae of such damage, especially in patients with no diagnosis of neurologic

OnabotulinumtoxinA treatment for MS-tremor modifies fMRI tremor response in central sensory-motor integration areas.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of tremor in MS is an unmet need. OnabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT-A) has shown promising results; however, little is known regarding its effects on the brain. The clinical presentation of tremor MS is shown to depend on subcortical neural damage and cortical neural plasticity. This study aimed to identify effects of onabotulinumtoxinA (BoNT-A) on brain activation in MS and upper-limb tremor using functional MRI. METHODS: Forty-three MS participants with tremor were randomized to receive intramuscular injections of placebo (n = 22) or BoNT-A (n = 21). Tremor was quantified using

Evaluating Spelling in Glioma Patients Undergoing Awake Surgery: a Systematic Review.

A main goal of awake surgery is to preserve language in order to facilitate return to work and maintain quality of life. Although spelling has become crucial in daily life, it has received little attention in awake surgery practice. We review assessments of spelling carried out in awake surgery studies, to inspect how current neurofunctional theories of spelling may guide pre-, intra- and post-operative neurosurgical practice. A systematic database search in Embase, Medline, PubMed and Web of Science identified studies reporting on spelling assessment in glioma patients undergoing awake surger
