Head acceleration during impacts on snow: evaluation of a ski helmet.

OBJECTIVES: Current standards require ski helmets to meet acceleration criteria during impacts to a rigid surface, but do not require helmets to be evaluated for head impacts to snow, which is a common cause of traumatic brain injury in skiing and snowboarding. The objective of this study is to measure head linear acceleration during impacts to snow, with and without a ski helmet. METHODS: A portable test bench was developed and used to perform drop test of an instrumented headform onto groomed ski slopes. Impacts were made on the top of the head with and without a helmet, at three speeds (5.

Investigation on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of FeGa3 Surface Film on SKD11 Substrate.

Gallium-based liquid metal is corrosive to steel alloys, forming FeGa3 surface films which can potentially be applied as a solid lubricant to enhance wear resistance and mitigate liquid metal-induced corrosion. However, the characteristics of these films remain insufficiently explored. In this study, Ga-In-Sn alloy was ultrasonically soldered onto annealed and decarburised substrates, followed by heating in a vacuum chamber to form a 30 μm thick FeGa3 reaction layer. The film on the annealed samples with an alpha-ferrite microstructure exhibited high porosity and a surface roughness of 1.97 Ra

Mechanical and bioactive properties of PVD TiO2 coating modified PEEK for biomedical applications.

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is gaining popularity in the biomedical field due to its excellent mechanical properties, chemical resistance and biocompatibility. Although PEEK is an excellent biomaterial, it may require bulk surface modification to tailor its properties for specific biomedical applications. In this study, the surface modification of PEEK was achieved by depositing titanium dioxide (TiO2) by PVD method. The microstructure and mechanical properties of TiO2 coatings were studied by SEM/EDS and nanoindentation tests. Conventional scratch tests were performed to determine the adhesio

Cenospheres-Reinforced PA-12 Composite: Preparation, Physicochemical Properties, and Soaking Tests.

The main aim of this research was the preparation of a polymer-ceramic composite with PA-12 as the polymer matrix and modified aluminosilicate cenospheres (CSs) as the ceramic filler. The CSs were subjected to an early purification and cleaning process, which was also taken as a second objective. The CSs were surface modified by a two-step process: (1) etching in Piranha solution and (2) silanization in 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. The composite was made for 3D printing by FDM. Raw and modified CSs and a composite with PA-12 were subjected to the following tests: surface development including

Self-cleaning, photocatalytic films on aluminum plates for multi-pollutant air remediation: promoting adhesion and activity by SiO2interlayers.

In recent years, nanoparticles have come under close scrutiny for their possible health and environmental issues, making them less attractive for photocatalytic applications in air or water purification. Replacing free nano-powders with active and stable films is thus a fundamental step towards developing effective photocatalytic devices. Aluminum represents a cheap and technologically-relevant substrate, but its photocatalytic applications have been hampered by adhesion issues and metal ion diffusion within the photocatalytic layer. In this work, the use of silica interlayers is investigated

A Decrease in the Hardness of Feces with Added Glucosylceramide Extracted from Koji In Vitro-A Working Hypothesis of Health Benefits of Dietary Glucosylceramide.

Skin barrier function, prevent colon cancer, head and neck cancer, and decrease liver cholesterol. However, the mechanism of action has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we propose a new working hypothesis regarding the health benefits and functions of glucosylceramide: decreased fecal hardness. This hypothesis was verified using an in vitro hardness test. The hardness of feces supplemented with glucosylceramide was significantly lower than that of the control. Based on these results, a new working hypothesis of dietary glucosylceramide was conceived: glucosylceramide passes through the

Composition design and performance analysis of binary and ternary Mg-Zn-Ti alloys for biomedical implants.

Magnesium-based implants are highly valued in the biomedical field for biocompatibility and biodegradability, though their inherent low strength in body fluids is a limitation. This study addresses this by alloying magnesium with zinc and titanium to enhance its properties. Mechanical alloying was used to synthesize binary (Mg-Zn, Mg-Ti) and ternary (Mg-Zn-Ti) alloys, which were then compacted and sintered. The alloy powders, composed of 10 wt% Zn and 5 wt% Ti, were milled at 360 rpm for 10 h. Microstructural analysis revealed uniformly dispersed particles, with SEM confirming spherical and fi

Multi-scale design of the structure and mechanical performance of the deep-sea hydrothermal mussel (Bathymodiolus aduloides) shell.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are renowned for being among the most extreme environments on Earth. However, the mussel shells found in these vent sites demonstrate remarkable productivity, despite being subjected to high pressure as well as unusual levels of heavy metals, pH, temperature, CO2, and sulphides. To comprehend how these mussels endure such extreme conditions, a systematic comparative study was conducted, focusing on the unique chemical composition, structural designs, and mechanical properties of hydrothermal vent mussels (Bathymodiolus aduloides) in comparison to shallow-water musse

Mechanical stress on canola seed during dehulling.

The mature canola seed comprises an embryo, a group of structures that have a high content of protein and oil, and a fibrous seed coat held together by endosperm tissues. High-quality canola meal production requires removal of fiber-rich seed hull that typically contributes little nutrient value. Canola hull accounts for more than 70.0% of the insoluble fiber within the seed, which limits its uses as feed. Dehulling canola seed, before oil extraction, increases the protein content and decreases fiber content in the meal, to up to 50.0% and to down to 10.0%, respectively. Due to the complexity

Impact of heterogeneous properties of soil and LNAPL on surfactant-enhanced capillary desaturation.

This paper investigates low-concentration (<1wt%) surfactant flushing when used as a follow-up technology for multiphase vacuum extraction on heterogeneous sites. Challenges posed by soil permeability, pore-size distribution, mineralogy, light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) weathering and groundwater hardness were quantified through batch and soil column tests. Compatibility issues between the mixed mineralogy soils, hard groundwater, mixed LNAPL and usual anionic surfactants were observed. The selected solution was a Winsor type I system promoting an interfacial tension of 0.06mN/m between

Nanomechanical behavior of MoS2 and WS2 multi-walled nanotubes and carbon nanohorns.

Nano-objects have been investigated for drug delivery, oil detection, contaminant removal, and tribology applications. In some applications, they are subjected to friction and deformation during contact with each other and their surfaces on which they slide. Experimental studies directly comparing local and global deformation are lacking. This research performs nanoindentation (local deformation) and compression tests (global deformation) with a nanoindenter (sharp tip and flat punch, respectively) on molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs), ~500 nm in diameter.
