Understanding health-related behavior among adolescents living with HIV in Lima, Peru.

BACKGROUND: The global HIV burden among adolescents ages 10-19 is growing. This population concurrently confronts the multifaceted challenges of adolescence and living with HIV. With the goal of informing future interventions tailored to this group, we assessed sexual activity, HIV diagnosis disclosure, combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) adherence, and drug use among adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in Lima, Peru. METHODS: Adolescents at risk or with a history of suboptimal cART adherence completed a self-administered, health behaviors survey and participated in support group sessio

Health, physiology, and behavior of dairy calves reared on 4 different substrates.

The objective of this study was to compare the health, physiology, and behavior of group-housed calves reared on wood shavings with those reared on alternative surfaces. At 1 wk of age, 80 calves were moved into 1 of 20 experimental pens (n = 4 calves/pen) where they remained until 6 wk of age. Pens had floors covered with pea gravel (PG), rubber chip (RC), sand (SA), or wood shavings (WS; n = 5 pens/substrate). Body weight, cleanliness, health, and skin surface and vaginal temperature were recorded at 1, 3, and 6 wk of age. Escherichia coli numbers were assessed on the skin surface of the sho

Risky health behavior among adolescents in the childhood cancer survivor study cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To report the prevalence and comparison of cancer-linked health behaviors and identify risk factors associated with unhealthy behavior among adolescent siblings and cancer survivors. METHODS: The Child Health and Illness Profile--Adolescent Edition (CHIP--AE) was completed by 307 survivors and 97 sibling controls 14-20 years of age. RESULTS: Risky behavior ranged from 0.7% to 35.8% for survivors and 1.0% to 41.2% for siblings. Comparisons of sexual behavior, tobacco, alcohol, or illicit drug use utilizing continuous data revealed no differences between groups. Categorically, survi

Mania symptoms and HIV-risk behavior among adolescents in mental health treatment.

This study explored whether adolescents with elevated symptoms of mania (ESM+) engage in more HIV risk behaviors than those with other psychiatric disorders and examined factors associated with HIV risk behavior among ESM+ adolescents. Eight hundred forty adolescents (56% female, 58% African American, M age = 14.9 years) who received mental health treatment completed private, computer-based assessments of psychiatric disorders and of sexual and substance use behaviors and provided urine to screen for sexually transmitted infections (STI). Eighty-seven percent met criteria for a psychiatric dis

Predicting oral contraceptive continuation using the transtheoretical model of health behavior change.

CONTEXT: Improved continuation of oral contraceptive use may decrease the incidence of unintended pregnancy. Therefore, identifying predictors of continuation is important to informing targeted interventions. METHODS: A survey conducted in 2003-2005 collected data from young women who sought oral contraceptives at three family planning clinics in New York, Dallas and Atlanta. Cluster analysis of data from 1,245 women was used to identify three distinct groups on the basis of baseline responses to items measuring constructs from the transtheoretical model of health behavior change: perceived a

Health promotion lifestyle and cancer screening behavior: a survey among academician women.

Breast self examination (BSE), screening mammography and Pap smear screening can significantly reduce mortality from breast and cervical cancer. In an effort to understand the factors that influence BSE, mammography, and Pap smear behavior of woman academicians, we here explored the relation between health promotion life-style and women's cancer screening practice. A total of 750 woman academicians working in a university were enrolled, 350 of them responding to the survey. The study instruments used were the Health Promotion Life-Style Profile (HPLP) scale and a questionnaire of demographic d

Perceived traffic air pollution, associated behavior and health in an alpine area.

The relationship of traffic air pollution, perception of exhaust fumes/soot and behavioral impact or symptoms/illnesses was investigated in two surveys (adults: aged 25-65, N = 1989, 62% participation; children: aged 8-12, N = 796, 85% participation) in 13 small alpine communities (Tyrol/Austria) by means of questionnaire responses and air pollution measurements. Although pollutant levels complied with current WHO guidelines, adult respondents felt annoyed by odourous traffic fumes (39.7%) or visible dust/soot (26.9%). Logistic regression analysis revealed that accompanying noise annoyance, ra

Health care provider and contraceptive care setting: the relationship to contraceptive behavior.

This study examines contraceptive delivery characteristics and their association with contraceptive behavior. Data were collected in telephone interviews from a national sample of 1057 women who were using female contraceptives. The overwhelming majority of the sample obtained contraceptive services from gynecologists and other physician specialists and were seen in private facilities. Whereas nearly half of the providers recommended use of specific methods, only one-fourth discouraged use of particular methods. The pill was both the most frequently recommended and most commonly discouraged me

Guiding functional near-infrared spectroscopy research on sedentary behavior and brain health.

BACKGROUND: Excessive exposure to sedentary behavior (SB) is associated with cognitive decline and impaired brain health; however, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) enables real-time monitoring of cerebral hemodynamics in naturalistic settings and offers unique technical advantages for understanding the effects of SB on brain health. Notably, methodological standardization specific to SB research is lacking, limiting cross-study comparisons and evidence synthesis despite established general fNIRS best pract

Behavior of college students in public health emergencies based on IMB model.

The frequency of global public health emergencies has risen significantly in recent years. During the coronavirus disease pandemic, it was observed that a proportion of college students lacked essential scientific knowledge and failed to implement necessary preventive measures, underscoring the urgency for targeted behavioral interventions. This study applies the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills model to investigate college students' behavioral responses to public health emergencies. By quantifying the interplay between information, motivation, and behavioral skills, this research seek

Lassa fever in Bauchi State, Nigeria: communication channels and health-seeking behavior.

OBJECTIVES: In Nigeria, despite the devastating effects of Lassa fever (LF), public health interventions have largely neglected timely health-seeking behavior (HSB) for LF symptoms. We, therefore, examined communication channels as a strategy associated with timely HSB in communities severely affected by LF in Bauchi State. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional design using a multi-stage sampling technique to select 1018 respondents aged 18 years and older. A structured questionnaire was used to conduct the interviews. Multivariate binary logistics regression was used to examine the statist

Risky sexual behavior in Veterans seeking substance use and mental health treatment.

Veterans in the United States are at an elevated risk for substance use and risky sexual behaviors, either of which may function as coping responses to trauma exposure. The current study examined risky sexual behaviors in a sample of Veterans seeking therapy to reduce substance use behaviors and mental health symptoms as part of a larger randomized controlled trial. Self-report measures assessed substance use behaviors, PTSD, and risky sexual behaviors. Veterans (N = 834) were mostly male (93.4 %) and White (71.6 %) with an average age of 48.25 years. In the past 30 days, 50.5 % of Veterans ha
