Evidence for indirect effects of pain catastrophizing on clinical pain among myofascial temporomandibular disorder participants: the mediating role of sleep disturbance.

Sleep disturbance and pain catastrophizing are important mediators of the chronic pain experience. To date, these factors have not been considered concurrently despite compelling theoretical rationale to do so. In the present study, we examined whether pain catastrophizing not only has direct effects on clinical pain and pain-related interference, but also indirect effects through its association with sleep disturbance. We evaluated this hypothesis using a cohort (n=214) of myofascial temporomandibular disorder participants using a statistical bootstrapping technique recommended for tests of i

Unpredictable chronic mild stress induces anxiety and depression-like behaviors and inactivates AMP-activated protein kinase in mice.

The unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) model was developed based upon the stress-diathesis hypothesis of depression. Most effects of UCMS can be reversed by antidepressants, demonstrating a strong predictive validity of this model for depression. However, the mechanisms underlying the effects induced by UCMS remain incompletely understood. Increasing evidence has shown that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) regulates intracellular energy metabolism and is especially important for neurons because neurons are known to have small energy reserves. Abnormalities in the AMPK pathway disturb

Depression in adolescence and young adulthood: the difficulty to integrate motivational/emotional systems.

Depression is presented as a multi-factorial bio-psycho-social expression that has evolved primarily as an effect of stressors related to the motivational/emotional systems that regulate the BrainMind in our relationship with conspecifics. These stressors may be caused by two sources of threat, firstly, the loss of bonding with the caregiver and later with a partner and/or group which relates to the SEPARATION (PANIC/GRIEF) system, secondly, social defeat as an expression of the social competition and social dominance. The sexual maturity drives the individual to social competition and social

Evidence of a disposition toward fearfulness and vulnerability to posttraumatic stress in dysfunctional pain patients.

Few investigations have addressed whether patient subgroups derived using the Multiaxial Assessment of Pain (MAP) [Turk, D. C., & Rudy, T. E. (1987). Tolerance to anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects of a partial agonist of glycineB receptors.

The present study examined effects of acute and repeated administration of 1-aminocyclopropanecarboxylic acid (ACPC), a partial agonist of glycineB receptors, in the conflict drinking test and the forced swim test in rats. Diazepam and imipramine were used, respectively, as reference drugs in those tests. In the conflict drinking test, acute administration of ACPC (200 mg/kg) increased fivefold the number of punished licks. A three- and fivefold increase in the number of punished licks was observed in rats treated repeatedly with ACPC (200 mg/kg daily; 14 days) and challenged with the same dos

Oxidative Stress Accompanies HIF1-Dependent Impairment of Glucose Metabolism in the Hippocampus of Adult Rats That Survived Prenatal Severe Hypoxia.

INTRODUCTION: Many socially significant diseases are associated with prenatal developmental disorders. Previously, we showed the pathological role of hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF1) in post-hypoxic reoxygenation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of prenatal severe hypoxia (PSH) on HIF1α protein expression as well as on HIF1-dependent activity of the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) and anaerobic glycolysis in the hippocampus (HPC) of offspring that reached adulthood. METHODS: PSH was induced during the critical period of fetal hippocampal formation on gestation days 14-16 in a hypo

Social Buffering is Dependent on Mutual Experience in Adolescent Male Mice Exposed to Social Defeat Stress.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who experience emotional, physical, or sexual abuse as children suffer from higher rates of major depressive disorder, drug abuse, and suicide. Early life interventions such as peer support groups can be beneficial to adolescents who experience trauma, suggesting that social support is important in facilitating rehabilitation and promoting resiliency to stress. Although there are some animal paradigms that can model how peer-peer interactions influence stress-reactivity, less is known about how individual stress experiences influence the effectiveness of social bufferin

Oxidative and Excitatory Neurotoxic Stresses in CRISPR/Cas9-Induced Kynurenine Aminotransferase Knockout Mice: A Novel Model for Despair-Based Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUNDS: Memory and emotion are especially vulnerable to psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is linked to disruptions in serotonin (5-HT) metabolism. Over 90% of the 5-HT precursor tryptophan (Trp) is metabolized via the Trp-kynurenine (KYN) metabolic pathway, which generates a variety of bioactive molecules. Dysregulation of KYN metabolism, particularly low levels of kynurenic acid (KYNA), appears to be linked to neuropsychiatric disorders. The majority of KYNA is produced by the aadat (kat2) gene-encoded mitochondrial kynurenine aminotransferase (KA

[Narratives on fear within psychiatric care].

The aim of the study is to describe and analyze beliefs and experiences of mental health care workers within Swedish psychiatric care prior to the introduction of neuroleptics in the early 1950s. The sources are narratives taken from interviews with nurses who worked in Swedish psychiatric care prior to 1953, works of fiction, and contemporary professional literature. The narratives are discussed from the perspective of modern literature on fear. A number of themes on fear recur in various permutations. The first encounter with the mentally ill was associated with fear. The physical environmen

Milnacipran, a new specific serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor.

Milnacipran is a new antidepressant which inhibits equipotently the reuptake of serotonin and noradrenaline both in vitro and in vivo with no effect on dopamine reuptake. Microdialysis studies have shown increased extracellular levels of both serotonin and noradrenaline after acute administration. Milnacipran is devoid of interactions at any known neurotransmitter receptor. In particular, and unlike tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), it has no activity at noradrenergic, muscarinic or histaminergic receptors. Contrary to TCAs, chronic administration of milnacipran does not modify beta-adrenocept

Managing away bad habits.

We've all worked with highly competent people who are held back by a seemingly fatal personality flaw. One person takes on too much work; another sees the downside in every proposed change; a third pushes people out of the way. At best, people with these "bad habits" create their own glass ceilings, which limit their success and their contributions to the company. At worst, they destroy their own careers. Although the psychological flaws of such individuals run deep, their managers are not helpless. In this article, James Waldroop and Timothy Butler--both psychologists--examine the root causes

Specificity of cognitive structure in depression and social phobia: a comparison of interpersonal and achievement content.

BACKGROUND: The comorbidity between the mood and anxiety is extensive and it is probable that individuals with these disorders share a number of cognitive characteristics. However, comorbidity rates with depression are not uniform among the various anxiety disorders. This study examined the common and distinguishing features of self-schematic structure in major depressive disorder and social anxiety compared to other anxiety disorders in general and to no psychiatric disturbance. METHODS: Participants completed the Psychological Distance Scaling Task, which provided an index of the cognitive

Life event dimensions of loss, humiliation, entrapment, and danger in the prediction of onsets of major depression and generalized anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Although substantial evidence suggests that stressful life events predispose to the onset of episodes of depression and anxiety, the essential features of these events that are depressogenic and anxiogenic remain uncertain. METHODS: High contextual threat stressful life events, assessed in 98 592 person-months from 7322 male and female adult twins ascertained from a population-based registry, were blindly rated on the dimensions of humiliation, entrapment, loss, and danger and their categories.
