[Predictors of sexual behavior in a group of heterosexual university students at risk for AIDS in Montreal].

In order to evaluate the predictors of risky sexual behavior and AIDS, 573 male and female college students enrolled in French speaking universities in Montreal answered a questionnaire dealing with their sexual behaviors, from which an index of risks was computed (CASH). The analyses show that the best predictors of the CASH for men are associated to their sexual partner taking the pill, peer attitudes toward sexuality and individual sensation-seeking index. For women the best predictors of risky sexual behaviors are the perception of chances to catch AIDS, use of drugs or alcohol during coit

Changes in sexual behavior by young urban heterosexual adults in response to the AIDS epidemic.

Young adults residing in four States were enrolled in the period 1985-88 in a multicenter study of cardiovascular disease risk factors. In 1989, 2,729 members of the group were given a self-administered questionnaire that included questions on changes in sexual behavior that subjects had made in response to the epidemic of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The final sample of 1,601 young, heterosexual, urban respondents included 412 white men, 568 white women, 224 black men, and 397 black women, all ages 21 to 40 years. Overall, nearly 50 percent of the sample reported having made at

Condom use and sexual habits of heterosexual intravenous drug users in northern Italy.

In order to assess modes of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission from heterosexual intravenous drug users (IVDUs) to their partners, condom use and sexual habits with both steady and occasional partners were investigated. A total of 349 heterosexual IVDUs (247 men and 102 women) who ignored, at the time of interview, their HIV serostatus were interviewed. Respondents were asked for information on condom use and sexual habits for the three year period prior to the interview. Nearly 40% of IVDUs reported sexual intercourse with both steady partners and occasional partners. Fifty-four

Importance of heterosexual activity in the transmission of hepatitis B and non-A, non-B hepatitis.

To identify previously unrecognized sources for acquiring acute hepatitis B and non-A, non-B (NANB) hepatitis, we interviewed patients with these types of hepatitis who were reported to two county health departments in the United States and matched control subjects for known and potential risk factors for acquiring hepatitis. Of 218 patients with hepatitis B and 140 patients with NANB hepatitis, 46% and 53%, respectively, had no commonly recognized source for infection. When these patients were compared with control subjects, significantly more patients with hepatitis B had multiple heterosexu

Immunologic thrombocytopenic purpura after heterosexual transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

We report four cases of immunologic thrombocytopenic purpura related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmitted through heterosexual contact in persons who were not homosexual, addicted to intravenous narcotic drugs, or hemophilic. Each transmission occurred in a different setting. A 23-year-old white woman had immunologic thrombocytopenic purpura in July 1985, with a platelet count of 11 X 10(9)/L. In January 1987, she had prominent submandibular and posterior cervical adenopathy. A careful social-sexual history revealed several sexual contacts with a male narcotic addict before July 1

The neuroendocrine response of luteinizing hormone to estrogen administration in heterosexual, homosexual, and transsexual subjects.

The neuroendocrine response of LH to estrogen administration may be related to sexual dimorphism of the brain, and therefore, homosexual and especially transsexual individuals may differ from heterosexual individuals in their responses. This study failed to find such differences among groups of female heterosexuals, homosexuals, and transsexuals. Specifically, after single dose estrogen administration, all subjects had an initial decline in serum LH levels, followed by a brisk rise of equal magnitude. Among males, the type of response was less uniform. After an initial fall in serum LH levels,

IgM detection by ELISA in the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus infections in homosexual and heterosexual immunosuppressed patients.

A new commercially developed cytomegalovirus (CMV)-IgM ELISA was found to be sensitive and specific when compared with sucrose gradient fractionation of Ig classes in CMV antibody-positive and negative sera. The presence of CMV IgM in patients' sera correlated with positive virus isolation from circulating mononuclear blood cells and urine. Serial examinations of patients with primary or recent CMV infection revealed a typical sequence of IgM and IgG development. The frequency of CMV isolation declined as the concentration of IgM decreased and the IgG levels increased. Since the isolation of C

The impact of human papillomavirus vaccination implementation in reducing cervical cancer in a heterosexual population.

Human papillomavirus remains a leading cause of cervical cancer globally, particularly affecting women in low- and middle-income countries. A gender-stratified deterministic compartmental model is formulated to assess the impact of HPV vaccination on cervical cancer dynamics in a heterosexual population. The model stratifies individuals into vaccinated, exposed, infectious, cancer, treated, and recovered compartments, and simulations are conducted using epidemiological data from Poland. Results show that the basic reproduction number is greater than one under current epidemiological HPV vaccin

Modeling adult heterosexual HIV transmission and its impact on mother-to-child infection.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has been a major focus of research for several decades due to its multiple transmission pathways, its high virulence and the absence, to date, of both curative and preventive treatments. Although sexual transmission remains by far the most dominant route, mother-to-child (vertical) transmission-which may occur during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding-is also significant and accounts for approximately 15%-30% of cases in the absence of antiretroviral therapy (ART). In this work, we develop a heterosexual HIV transmission model that incorporates vertic

The drive for muscularity and disordered eating among heterosexual and sexual minority men in Israel.

In this study, we investigated the moderating effects of self-acceptance and perceived country-level acceptance of gender and sexual orientation on the relationship between the drive for muscularity and disordered eating, particularly among sexual minority and cisgender men. We hypothesized that high levels of acceptance, both individually and within the societal context, would mitigate the pressure to adhere to conventional masculine ideals, consequently lowering the likelihood of engaging in disordered eating behaviors. Seven hundred twenty-three Israeli men aged 18-68 participated in the st

Symptom Profiles and Intensive Treatment Outcomes in Sexual Minority and Heterosexual Patients With OCD.

Sexual minority (SM) individuals appear to be at greater risk for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Despite this, little is known about OCD presentation and treatment outcomes among SM individuals. Although some research has suggested that SM individuals may be more likely to endorse intrusive thoughts related to violence/sex/religion compared to heterosexual individuals, extant literature has neglected to examine potential differences across different SM groups, a notable limitation given the apparent differences in the types of minority stress that each group experiences and the unique he

The Syphilis Epidemic Among Heterosexuals Is Accelerating: Evidence From King County, Washington.

BACKGROUND: We characterized the rapid increase in syphilis among cisgender women in King County, Washington, and compared it with trends among cisgender men who have sex with men. METHOD: We used surveillance data from King County, 2007 to 2022, to describe incidence trends stratified by syphilis stage, gender, and gender of sex partners; trends in pregnant cases and congenital syphilis; and trends in rapid plasma reagin titer at diagnosis among late/unknown duration cases. We used joinpoint regression to analyze trends. RESULTS: Among cisgender women, all-stage syphilis incidence remained

Psychosocial risk factors of erectile dysfunction among heterosexual men living with HIV.

ABSTRACTThe risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) is significantly higher in men living with HIV (MLWH). Despite the adverse effects of ED on quality of life for MLWH, there is a lack of research on the psychosocial factors that may influence ED, especially among heterosexual MLWH. According to a recent systematic review, findings on the psychosocial risk factors of ED in past studies have been largely conflicting or inconclusive. To bridge this gap, we analyzed psychosocial and other correlates of ED among a sample of 317 primarily Black and Latino heterosexual adult MLWH in New York City. Data c

The duration and body position during tongue-kissing among heterosexual men and women.

BACKGROUND: Emerging data suggest tongue-kissing may transmit gonorrhea. We aim to examine the duration or body position of heterosexual men and women during tongue-kissing (henceforth, known as kissing). METHODS: A cross-sectional survey among heterosexual men and women attending the Melbourne Sexual Health Centre in Australia between May 2019 and March 2020 collected data on the duration and body position (i.e., on top of or lying down underneath) of their most recent kissing partner in the past 3 months. Univariable and multivariable linear regressions were performed to examine the associa

Anal Intercourse among Heterosexual Young Adults: A Population-Based Survey in Switzerland.

Anal intercourse (AI) among heterosexuals is an understudied and taboo subject. This 2017 Swiss national study aimed to describe the characteristics and motivations of heterosexual young adults practicing AI. Participants with any same-sex experience, same-sex attraction or non-heterosexual identity were excluded. The Federal Statistical Office provided the initial sample and potential participants were recruited through postal mail inviting them to an online survey (response rate 15.1%). The sample comprised 3892 participants (52% males; 54% of the overall sample, mean age 26.3 years). Overal

Assessing the Theory of Gender and Power: HIV Risk Among Heterosexual Minority Dyads.

This study drew on the Theory of Gender and Power (TGP) as a framework to assess power inequalities within heterosexual dyads and their effects on women. Structural equation modeling was used to better understand the relationship between structural and interpersonal power and HIV sexual risk within African American and Latina women's heterosexual dyads. The main outcome variable was women's sexual HIV risk in the dyad and was created using women's reports of condomless sex with their main male partners and partners' reports of their HIV risk behaviors. Theoretical associations developed a prio

Gender inequality dynamics in the prevention of a heterosexual HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa.

This paper critiques the approach to the elimination of gender inequality as an HIV prevention strategy in the just ended era of the Millennium Development Goals, with the aim of contributing to the formulation of policy guidelines for sub-Saharan Africa in the Sustainable Development Goals. The aim is to underscore the mutual responsibility of women and men in achieving a sustainable HIV response and ending the epidemic. While taking into account the real vulnerability of women, prevention programmes can reflect gender dynamics more accurately so that attention is given to the role of both se

Azithromycin Treatment Failure for Chlamydia trachomatis Among Heterosexual Men With Nongonococcal Urethritis.

BACKGROUND: Three recent prospective studies have suggested that the 1-g dose of azithromycin for Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) was less effective than expected, reporting a wide range of treatment failure rates (5.8%-22.6%). Reasons for the disparate results could be attributed to geographic or methodological differences. The purpose of this study was to reexamine the studies and attempt to harmonize methodologies to reduce misclassification as a result of false positives from early test-of-cure (TOC) or reinfection as a result of sexual exposure rather than treatment failure. METHODS: Men who

Sexual Mixing in Shanghai: Are Heterosexual Contact Patterns Compatible With an HIV/AIDS Epidemic?

China's HIV prevalence is low, mainly concentrated among female sex workers (FSWs), their clients, men who have sex with men, and the stable partners of members of these high-risk groups. We evaluate the contribution to the spread of HIV of China's regime of heterosexual relations, of the structure of heterosexual networks, and of the attributes of key population groups with simulations driven by data from a cross-sectional survey of egocentric sexual networks of the general population of Shanghai and from a concurrent respondent-driven sample of FSWs. We find that the heterosexual network gen
