Lichens are known to synthesize a variety of secondary metabolites having multifunctional activity in response to external environmental condition. Two common lichen extrolites, atranorin and salazinic acid, are known to afford antioxidant as well as photoprotectant nature depending on the abiotic/biotic stress. The present investigation aims to study the influence of altitudinal gradient on the quantitative profile of atranorin and salazinic acid in three lichen species, Bulbothrix setschwanensis (Zahlbr.) Hale, Everniastrum cirrhatum (Fr.) Hale and Parmotrema reticulatum (Taylor) Choisy, Par

Sixty male patients of leprosy (mean age = 27.2 +/- 5.04 years) selected at random, were studied for gonadal involvement and therapeutic efficacy of two indigenous drugs. Of these 34 were married, with the mean duration of illness 4.17 +/- 3.27 years. Only those with lepromatous and dimorphous leprosy developed testicular and epididymal changes. Testicular pain and/or swelling (lepromatous = 62.5%, dimorphous = 30%) was the commonest presenting feature. Altered sexual function was observed in 34 (56.6%) cases, while 11 patients revealed altered sexual hair pattern and nine gynaecomastia. Reduc

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is a major livestock pest and disease vector in tropical and subtropical regions. Host species exhibit heritable variation in tick susceptibility, resulting in differences in tick burden. Building on our previous finding that R. microplus predominates on both Bos indicus and Bos frontalis across seasons and altitudes, with greater tick diversity in B. frontalis, this study examines host-parasite interactions between these bovine hosts. In Arunachal Pradesh, the semi-domesticated Bos frontalis and domesticated Bos indicus are significant bovine hosts with

The frost resistance of new foliage and flowers and their relationship with the phenology of leaf-out and flowering are essential for explaining plant species distribution in seasonally cold climates. In this study, we performed a congeneric, elevational comparison of phenology with frost resistance in evergreen Rhododendron species in the Southeastern Himalayas. A comparison of the microclimate with long-term meteorological records of low temperature extremes permitted the calculation of a realistic, long-term margin of safety for 12 Rhododendron species. Surprisingly, frost resistance and ph

Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) primarily results from inherited defects in components of the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase enzyme complex. These include gene defects in cytochrome B-245/558 subunit α/β and neutrophil cytosolic factors 1, 2, and 4. Recently, homozygous loss-of-function variants in cytochrome B-245 chaperone 1 gene (CYBC1) have been discovered to cause CGD (CYBC1-CGD). Data on variant-proven CGD from low-income countries, the most underprivileged regions of the world, remain sparse due to numerous constraints. Herein, we report the first cohort of pati

The lower inhaled oxygen per volume at high altitude poses an intimidating challenge for humans to survive and reproduce. Indigenous populations of the Himalayas reportedly exhibit higher microcirculatory blood flow accompanied by higher orders of magnitude of nitric oxide (NO) products in lung, plasma and red blood cells as a vascular adaptation strategy for hypobaric hypoxia. The precise mechanism of such observed higher NO metabolites for hypoxia adaptation remains elusive. Studying high altitude native Ladakhi women, we observed significant higher eNOS mRNA and protein in blood/plasma as c

Frostbite is an injury caused by the freezing of tissue, causing varied levels of tissue damage and necrosis. Case reports have shown a positive effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) in such injuries, in acute cases as well as delayed (up to 21 days) presentation with complications. In this case report we present the course of hyperbaric treatment of two patients (a brother and sister, age 58 and 62) who sustained frostbite injuries to both feet 28 days earlier while hiking in the Himalayas. They were initially treated in Nepal following local protocol; afterward their primary care in the Netherl

BACKGROUNDS OBJECTIVES: Dengue fever, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, is a significant public health concern in Nepal. An extensive Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) survey related to Aedes mosquitoes and prevention of dengue was conducted along the route from Matihani (62 m above sea level) to Kalinchok (3840 m asl) in central Nepal. This research examined residents' awareness of Aedes mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit, aiming to support the World Health Organization's national and global fight against mosquito-borne diseases.
METHODS: The survey included 550 participants aged

The majority of research dealing with the impacts of the Himalayan climate on human physiology focuses on low air temperature, high wind speed, and low air pressure and oxygen content, potentially leading to hypothermia and hypoxia. Only a few studies describe the influence of the weather conditions in the Himalayas on the body's ability to maintain thermal balance. The aim of the present research is to trace the heat exchange between humans and their surroundings during a typical, 6-day summit attempt of Mount Everest in the spring and winter seasons. Additionally, an emergency night outdoors

The plant-pollinator 'arms race' model posits that a major driver of the evolution of elongated corollas in flowers is reciprocal selection for 'morphological fit' between pollinator-tongue length and access distance to nectar (usually corolla-tube length). Evidence for the pollinator-mediated selection on tube length and evolution of multiple, correlated floral traits remains inconclusive. To gain possible insights into the strength of stabilizing selection by assessing standing phenotypic variation, we measured a series of functionally important floral traits, including corolla tube length a

Up to half the world's population of bar-headed geese (Anser indicus) migrate between central Asia and India and fly between 5000 m and 9000 m above sea level as they cross the Himalayas. The partial pressures of oxygen at these altitudes are, respectively, about 50% and 30% those at sea level. Flapping flight is energetically expensive, so how are bar-headed geese able to migrate at such altitudes? The haemoglobin of bar-headed geese has a greater affinity for oxygen than those of lowland birds, and birds are able to hyperventilate to a greater extent than mammals during severe hypoxia. Toget

Glacier forefields provide model ecosystems for studying primary succession, where newly exposed substrates are colonized by microbes associated with lichens, biological soil crusts (BSCs), mosses, vascular plants, and bulk soil. Collectively, these sources form an interconnected microbial holobiome, yet their roles in structuring bacterial and fungal metacommunities remain poorly understood. We investigated how source identity, moraine age, and topography shape microbial assembly across four glacier forefields in the high-altitude desert of Ladakh, India (northwestern Himalaya). Using a chron

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a significant tick-borne flavivirus responsible for severe human diseases. Here, we analyzed the genetic diversity and evolutionary dynamics of TBEV using 263 genome sequences from the NCBI database and identified key amino acid mutations. TBEV sequences were classified into five genotypes-Baikalian, European, Far-Eastern, Himalaya, and Siberian-showing ORF nucleotide similarity of 81.5% to 88.0% and amino acid similarity of 93.0% to 96.4%. Extensive recombination between genotypes was not observed. Entropy analyses revealed highly variable sites distrib

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fastest increasing cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States and is projected to be the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States by 2030. Main risk factors include alcoholic cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). More than half of the patients have advanced-stage disease at presentation. Currently approved frontline systemic therapy options include sorafenib, lenvatinib, and atezolizumab/bevacizumab. Over the past decade, there has been a significant improvement in surv

An endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is located in the Sutlej River Valley in Himachal Pradesh (India) in the north-western Himalaya where CL co-exists with visceral leishmaniasis (VL). In areas of the Indian subcontinent such as Rajasthan, cutaneous leishmaniasis is transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) and Phlebotomus salehi. In Himachal Pradesh, Phlebotomus longiductus (Parrot) is suspected to be the vector for CL. In the current study, sand flies were collected and tested for Leishmania infection and to confirm the vector species causing CL. Sand flies were collected du

The presence of arsenic in the groundwater of the densely-populated Bengal Basin evolved as a mass-poisoning agent and is a reason for the misery of millions of people living here. High-level arsenic was detected in the shallow aquifer-tube wells of the basin in the late-20th century. The redox conditions and the biogeochemical activities in the shallow aquifers support the existence of arsenic in its most toxic +3 state. The shallow aquifers are constructed by the Holocene reduced grey sands, having a lesser capacity to hold the arsenic brought from the Himalayas by the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Megh
