OBJECTIVES: Hoarding disorder (HD) was recognized as a psychiatric disorder in 2013. Existing literature suggests room for improvement in its treatment. The current pilot study aimed to provide an initial evaluation on the potential of compassion-focused therapy (CFT) as an intervention for HD, with the primary aim being assessing its feasibility and acceptability, and the secondary being evaluating its effects.
DESIGN: Both CFT and a second round of the current standard of treatment and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) were investigated in the current study as follow-up treatment options

Early life adversity, ranging from material deprivation and parental dysfunction to abusive and life-threatening events, has been associated with hoarding symptom severity. Moreover, both victims of early life adversity and individuals with hoarding disorder have been found to have a higher tendency toward detail-oriented visual processing. This study aimed to investigate the role of detail-oriented visual processing in the relationship between early life adversity and hoarding-related dysfunction. Childhood exposure to life adversity, hoarding symptom severity, and emotional attachment to pos

Hoarding disorder (HD) is characterized by difficulty discarding or parting with possessions and clutter, which causes distress or impairment in important areas of functioning. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for HD has shown promise; however, little is known about the brain mechanisms underlying symptom reduction. We previously reported the robust clinical effects of the Buried in Treasures workshop (BIT)-a skills-based group which incorporates CBT principles-augmented with uncluttering home visits (BIT+), in a waitlist-controlled trial involving adults with HD. This study examined neural

This study aimed to investigate the presence of anti-C. burnetii antibodies in animal-hoarding owners and their dogs living in Curitiba, the eighth biggest city in Brazil with 1.8 million habitants. A total of 19 animal-hoarding individuals from 21 households and their 264 dogs were sampled. Serum samples were tested by the indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) for IgG antibodies against C. burnetii. Surprisingly, no hoarding owner or dog was seropositive, significantly contrasting (p = 0.0001) with the previous survey in policemen and their working dogs in the same city. The absence of sero

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder presents significant individual and interpersonal consequences. Because hoarding has only recently been added to the DSM, relatively little is known about associated comorbidity patterns. Several researchers have postulated a relationship between hoarding and schizotypy. To date, however, no investigations have considered which specific types of schizotypal traits relate to hoarding symptoms.
METHODS: We examined the association between hoarding and schizotypal symptoms using multivariate analyses in two samples-a sample of 120 young adults and a community sample

We investigated the presentation and correlates of hoarding behaviors in 204 children aged 7-13 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and comorbid anxiety or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms. Approximately 34% of the sample presented at least moderate levels, and with 7% presenting severe to extreme levels of hoarding. Child gender predicted hoarding severity. In addition, child ASD-related social difficulties together with attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder symptom severity positively predicted hoarding controlling for child gender and restricted and repetitive behaviors.

We previously demonstrated that 3rd ventricular (3V) neuropeptide Y (NPY) or agouti-related protein (AgRP) injection potently stimulates food foraging/hoarding/intake in Siberian hamsters. Because NPY and AgRP are highly colocalized in arcuate nucleus neurons in this and other species, we tested whether subthreshold doses of NPY and AgRP coinjected into the 3V stimulates food foraging, hoarding, and intake, and/or neural activation [c-Fos immunoreactivity (c-Fos-ir)] in hamsters housed in a foraging/hoarding apparatus. In the behavioral experiment, each hamster received four 3V treatments by u

BACKGROUND: Hoarding Disorder (HD) is characterized by persistent difficulty discarding possessions due to a strong urge to save them, resulting in excessive clutter that compromises functioning. Despite the common prevalence and profound consequences of HD, there are no FDA approved treatments. Individuals with HD often have comorbid major depressive disorder (MDD). This study examined the feasibility and initial efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for HD patients with comorbid MDD.
METHODS: Participants with moderate or severe MDD and co-morbid HD underwent daily

OBJECTIVE: Hoarding disorder (HD) is difficult to treat. In an effort to increase efficacy and engagement in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), we developed and evaluated a novel intervention comprising group CBT combined with between-session Internet-based clinician support for people with HD.
METHOD: Twenty participants with HD received group CBT combined with an Internet-support system enabling therapist-participant communication between group sessions.
RESULTS: The treatment was associated with a significant reduction on the Saving Inventory-Revised (SI-R) and a large effect size (Cohen

OBJECTIVES: Two hundred and thirty-four cats removed from an institutionalized hoarding facility (IHF) demonstrated severe, atypical pyogenic infections. The objective of this study was to document the various syndromes and determine the etiology of the infections.
METHODS: All cats were evaluated initially after removal from the IHF and on a daily basis for at least 15 months. Samples were collected and sent for culture/susceptibility and histopathology to commercial laboratories or stored at -20(o)C. PCR was performed using universal bacterial primers to amplify the 16S-23S rRNA intergenic

OBJECTIVE: To report on hoarding of prescribed medicines, with focus on insulins, in the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic and on regulatory actions taken to avoid shortage.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The National Prescribed Drug Register which utilizes the Anatomic Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Classification System and covers the total Swedish population was used. We calculated the number of packages of insulins (ATC code A10A), oral anti-diabetics (A10B), and all medicines across all ATC codes combined (A-S) dispensed per week in 2019 and 2020. Correspondingly, the number of packages of glucos

OBJECTIVES: Late life depression (LLD) and hoarding disorder (HD) are common in older adults and characterized by executive dysfunction and disability. We aimed to determine the frequency of co-occurring HD in LLD and examine hoarding severity as an additional contributor to executive dysfunction, disability, and response to psychotherapy for LLD.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
SETTING: Outpatient psychiatry program.
PARTICIPANTS: Eighty-three community-dwelling adults ages 65-90 with LLD.
INTERVENTION: Problem-solving therapy.

BACKGROUND: Group cognitive-behavioural therapy (G-CBT) for hoarding disorder (HD) may be an intervention of choice, considering its efficacy, low costs, and impact on comorbid anxiety and depression. But although G-CBT and modifications of G-CBT have been applied, none has assessed G-CBT efficacy at follow-up. In the current open-label pilot study, we tested the efficacy of G-CBT at posttreatment and 6-month follow-up and whether the inclusion of targeted reasoning and self-identity components added to G-CBT efficacy.
METHODS: Participants (n = 16) with the HD according to the DSM-5 criteria

The current study describes isolation of Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) from a juvenile male cat that died after being rescued from an animal hoarding incident. Grossly, there was evidence of pneumonia and renal abscessation. Histologically, there was diffuse interstitial pneumonia with necrosis and necrotizing and suppurative nephritis with colonies of coccobacilli. Within the lung, kidney, and mesentery there was necrotizing and suppurative vasculitis with thrombosis and coccobacilli. OBJECTIVE: The Buried in Treasures (BIT) workshop is a promising treatment for hoarding disorder (HD), though many participants struggle with home uncluttering. This randomized waitlist-controlled trial investigated the efficacy of a version of BIT, augmented with in-home uncluttering practice (BIT+).
METHOD: Adults (N = 41) with hoarding disorder were recruited from the community and randomly assigned to BIT+ or waitlist. BIT+ consisted of 16 sessions of the BIT workshop and 10 uncluttering home visits over 18 weeks. Outcome measures included the Saving Inventory-Revised (self-report) and th

OBJECTIVES: Several studies consistently showed that patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have high rates of hoarding disorder (HD) comorbidity. The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical and cognitive features of adult ADHD patients with and without hoarding comorbidity according to a self-report measure, and a sample of healthy controls.
METHODS: Fifty-seven consecutive adult outpatients with a primary diagnosis of ADHD with comorbid hoarding disorder (ADHD+HD), 57 matched ADHD patients without hoarding disorder comorbidity (ADHD-HD), and a control gro

People reporting compulsive hoarding symptoms (CHS) have lower mindfulness skills than those without such symptoms. Mindfulness skills can have the role of a protective buffer against stressful periods. The quarantine imposed to contain the COVID-19 spread had a negative impact on daily habits and healthy behaviors (including social interactions). An increased attachment to objects might be one of the under-recognized psychological consequences of these difficult times, yet no study focused on CHS. Through an online survey in men who were on quarantine during the pandemic, this exploratory sur

BACKGROUND: The Hoarding Rating Scale-Self-Report (HRS-SR) is a five-item scale that assesses the symptoms of hoarding. These symptoms include excessive acquisition, difficulty in discarding, and excessive clutter that causes distress. We conducted three studies to examine the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Japanese version of the HRS-SR (HRS-SR-J).
METHODS: Study 1 examined its reliability; 193 college students and 320 adolescents and adults completed the HRS-SR-J and, of the college students, 32 took it again 2 weeks later. Study 2 aimed to confirm that its scores in a s

Childhood trauma, cold and controlling parenting experiences, and attachment difficulties are common in individuals with hoarding disorder (HD). One theory suggests that strong attachment to objects may arise as a compensatory response for early thwarted relatedness needs. However, first-line cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT) for HD rarely address these early adverse experiences during treatment. This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of an imagery rescripting intervention targeting early aversive memories in 10 individuals diagnosed with HD (Mage = 6
