Prevalence of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms in Elderly Parkinson Disease Patients: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: The clinical picture of obsessive-compulsive disorder encompasses a broad range of symptoms that are related to multiple psychological domains, including perception, cognition, emotion, and social relatedness. As obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) frequently have an early onset, there are limited data about OCS in older populations (≥65 years) and, in particular, in elderly subjects with Parkinson disease (PD). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of OCS using a self-report measure (Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised) and to identify associated sociodemograp

Clinical characteristics of obsessive-compulsive disorder comorbid with obsessive -compulsive personality disorder: subtype implications.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric condition characterized by persistent obsessions and compulsions that lead to significant distress and functional impairment. Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) frequently co-occurs in individuals with OCD and has been identified in several studies as the most prevalent personality disorder within this population. However, the clinical relevance of this comorbidity remains uncertain, particularly in terms of whether it reflects a distinct OCD subtype characterized by specific onset patterns and symptom dimensions. Effects of a brief anxiety sensitivity reduction intervention on obsessive compulsive spectrum symptoms in a young adult sample.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) has been identified as a transdiagnostic cognitive risk factor for a wide range of affective disorders, including conditions within the obsessive compulsive (OC) spectrum. A growing body of research has demonstrated that directly reducing AS leads to subsequent reductions of other psychiatric symptoms, including anxiety, worry, and mood. To date, no study has examined the efficacy of a brief AS intervention on reducing OC and hoarding symptoms. METHOD: Non-treatment seeking young adults (N = 104; 83.7% female; 81.7% Caucasian) were selected for having eleva

Clinical characteristics of comorbid obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: To explore bidirectional comorbidity between bipolar disorder (BPD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in youth and to examine the symptom profile and clinical correlates of both disorders in the context of reciprocal comorbidity and ascertainment status. METHODS: Two samples of consecutively referred youth (ages 6-17 years) ascertained contemporaneously for respective studies of BPD and OCD were compared using clinical and scalar assessment and structured diagnostic interviews. RESULTS: A total of 21% (17/82) of the BPD subjects and 15% (19/125) of the OCD subjects met DSM-I

Predictors of early adult outcomes in pediatric-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the childhood clinical predictors of early adult outcomes in pediatric-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and to assess whether dimensional subtypes of OCD and the presence of comorbid tic symptoms influence long-term outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal cohort study in which 45 of 62 eligible children with OCD were reassessed an average of 9 years later, in early adulthood. Main outcome measures included expert-rated, obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptom severity and time to remission of OC symptoms. Baseline clinical characteri

Characteristics of hoarding in older adults.

OBJECTIVE: This study determined the clinical characteristics of late-life hoarding disorder (HD). METHODS: Older adults (age 60 and older) with HD (n = 55) and without psychiatric diagnoses (n = 39) were compared on psychiatric, functional, cognitive, and health-related measures. Associations between age and clinical characteristics in a large sample of mixed age (n = 210; age range: 20-78) participants with HD were also determined. RESULTS: Individuals with late-life HD were characterized by substantial impairments in psychiatric, functional, cognitive, and medical status. Health risks (e.

Self-injurious behavior and serotonin in Prader-Willi syndrome.

Low central nervous system (CNS) serotonin levels have been associated with impulsive, aggressive and self-injurious behavior (SIB). Persons with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) often engage in self-injury by severe compulsive skin picking and gouging and often manifest compulsive eating, hoarding, and explosive outbursts. Some of the compulsive behaviors seen in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) bear similarity to behaviors associated with PWS: Skin picking, trichotillomania, and onychophagia (nail biting). There is abundant evidence that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (S

The structure of genetic and environmental risk factors for dimensional representations of DSM-5 obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders.

IMPORTANCE: The new DSM-5 "Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders" chapter contains a series of conditions thought to be etiologically related to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, the evidence to support this relatedness remains incomplete. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the degree to which genetic and environmental risk factors are shared and/or unique to dimensionally scored OCD, body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), hoarding disorder (HD), trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) (TTM), and excoriation (skin-picking) disorder (SPD). Introduction to the Special Issue: Conceptualization, Assessment, and Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Co-Occurring Conditions.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has a lifetime prevalence of 1%-2% and typically presents as a chronic condition with significant functional impairment. Comorbidity with OCD is the norm, with 90% of individuals with OCD also meeting diagnostic criteria for a co-occurring condition. Co-occurring conditions can complicate the conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of OCD, such as by intensifying existing symptoms, obscuring differential diagnosis of phenotypically and functionally similar symptoms, and interfering with cognitive behavioral treatment. This two-part special issue reviews

Assessing obsessive-compulsive symptoms in a subclinical and clinical sample: the development of the Hungarian version of the OCI-R.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of clinical obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is around 1-2% in the population. Questionnaires, such as the OCI-R, are a useful tool in the diagnositc process. The purpose of this study was to develop the Hungarian version of the OCI-R, examine its validity and reliability, and its ability to differentiate between clinical and subclinical OCD. METHODS: Confirmatiory factor analysis was carried out on the subclinical sample (N = 4301). Reliability analysis was carried out on both samples, and Mann-Whitney tests were used to compare the two samples. RESULTS: The si

A naturalistic exploratory study of the impact of demographic, phenotypic and comorbid features in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the impact of gender, age at onset, phenotype and comorbidity in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children. In this naturalistic study we consider these characteristics of OCD in the framework of the 4 OCD phenotypes (contamination/cleaning, order/symmetry, obsessions/checking and hoarding) proposed by Leckman et al. SAMPLING AND METHODS: A consecutive series of 257 patients aged 13.6 +/- 2.8 years, diagnosed using a DSM-IV-based clinical interview (Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School Age Children - Present and Li

An investigation of the impact of social exclusion on attachment to possessions and saving behaviors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hoarding disorder (HD) is a debilitating mental illness characterized by extreme difficulty parting with possessions and clutter that can result in dangerous living conditions. One hypothesis about why individuals with HD save possessions is that they possess a pathological attachment to their belongings, which may serve to compensate for unfulfilling interpersonal relationships. However, there is a dearth of empirical work examining this. The current study examined the impact of an experimental manipulation of social exclusion on attachment to possessions and saving

Association between obsessive-compulsive and related disorders and experiential avoidance: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The associations between the distinct types of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders and experiential avoidance have received mixed evidence. We, thus, undertook this meta-analysis to i) re-examine the association between obsessive-compulsive disorder and experiential avoidance, ii) extend this association to hoarding disorder, trichotillomania, and body dysmorphic disorder, and iii) identify potential variables affecting these associations. Five databases, including Medline, Embase, PsychINFO, Web of Science and CINAHL, were searched until March 15th, 2021. Meta-analyses based on random-

Psychometric Evaluation of a Revised Scoring Approach for the Children's Saving Inventory in a Canadian Sample of Youth With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

The Children's Saving Inventory (CSI) was introduced in 2011 and is the first parent-rated questionnaire specifically designed to measure the severity of hoarding symptoms in youth. To date, however, no replication studies of the CSI have been published. Additionally, the total CSI score includes several items measuring acquisition, a behavioural dimension that has since been excluded from DSM-5's hoarding disorder criteria. Given these limitations, the primary goal of the present study was to test a modified, DSM-5-consistent, total score of the CSI. Because a confirmatory factor analysis did

Global Prevalence of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders: A Systematic Review and Modeling Study.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is one of the common mental disorders globally. However, there are limited studies on the prevalence of OCD and four other disorders categorized under obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, namely, hoarding disorder, excoriation disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, and trichotillomania. The authors sought to fill the epidemiological gap in the literature. METHODS: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar were systematically searched from inception to June 8, 2025. Studies representative of national or subnational general p

[Classification of obsessivecompulsive disorder: evolution in the DSM-V].

Classification of obsessive-compulsive disorder : evolution in the DSM V. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) criteria were first described in the third edition of Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM), in the 1980's. OCD was then classified as an anxious disorder. Today, a new group in DSM-V included OCD and other closed disorders, called "OCD and related disorders". In this new edition, hoarding, before considered as a symptom of OCD, was isolated in a new disorder called hording disorder. This new family also includes body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania and skin

THE RELATIONSHIP OF OBSESSIONS AND COMPULSIONS WITH AGGRESSION IN PATIENTS WITH OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder that is frequently encountered in the clinic and affects the functionality of patients significantly. Patients with higher levels of aggression have lower treatment compliance and recovery rates for their current mental illnesses. In our study, the relationships between OCD and its subtypes and aggression were examined. A total of 87 patients with OCD were included in the study. Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) were applied to the patients. In this study, the relationship
