Loneliness, coping practices and masculinities in later life: Findings from a study of older men living alone in England.

While much attention has been given to loneliness as a public health and societal problem less consideration has been given to men's experiences, particularly in later life, and there is a limited evidence based on what works with supporting older men to counteract the impact of loneliness on their mental and social wellbeing. In this paper, we focus on the experiences of older men living alone in the community. Between 2017-2018 72 men residing in England (65-95 years) took part in the study and shared their accounts of experiencing and addressing loneliness on an everyday basis. We generated

Persistence of Mental Health Deterioration Among People Living Alone During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Periodically-repeated Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: This longitudinal study aimed to investigate how psychological distress levels changed from early to middle phases of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic depending on the living arrangements of individuals. Avoidant personality disorder and social functioning: A longitudinal, observational study investigating predictors of change in a clinical sample.

Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) is an understudied, severe disorder. This study includes a clinical sample of AvPD patients (N = 460) treated within specialist mental health services. Social functioning was repeatedly assessed by self-report: Work and Social Adjustment Scale. Personality functioning (self-report), pretreatment occupational activity, civil status/family situation (self-report), and comorbidity; personality and symptom disorders were assessed at baseline. More extensive baseline impairment of social functioning was significantly associated with poorer personality functionin

Benefits of a psychosocial intervention programme using volunteers for the prevention of loneliness among older women living alone in Spain.

This study aims to analyse the effectiveness of a psychosocial intervention programme in preventing loneliness and increasing self-efficacy and social participation among older women living alone in Spain. A sequential, nested experimental design was used, with a primary quantitative quasi-experimental pre-post study with a control group (CG) and a secondary qualitative study. A total of 48 women participated, and 34 of them (the experimental group, EG) received a 25-hour psychosocial support intervention delivered by volunteers who focused on three aspects: conversation, attribution retrainin

DaPeCa-9 - cohabitation and socio-economic conditions predict penile cancer-specific survival in a national clinical study from Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Cohabitation and social conditions predict prognosis in several cancers; recent data suggest this might also be the case in penile cancer. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prognostic significance of cohabitation, living arrangements and socio-economic conditions for cancer-specific survival (CSS) in patients with penile squamous cell carcinoma (pSCC). METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated CSS in 429 pSCC patients from a 10-year period. We assessed cohabitation, living arrangements and socio-economic conditions(SEC) as prognostic predictors. Effects of a consumer driven home modification intervention on community participation for people with mobility disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Community participation has become a key outcome measure for people with disabilities. This has resulted in a shift in researchers focus from the individual to the environment. However, research has focused primarily on participation barriers in the community with limited research examining the role of the home environment. For people with mobility disabilities the home environment is the starting place for community participation and research is needed to understand the relationship between the home and participation outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the effects of a consu

The everyday speech environments of preschoolers with and without cochlear implants.

Children who receive cochlear implants develop spoken language on a protracted timescale. The home environment facilitates speech-language development, yet it is relatively unknown how the environment differs between children with cochlear implants and typical hearing. We matched eighteen preschoolers with implants (31-65 months) to two groups of children with typical hearing: by chronological age and hearing age. Each child completed a long-form, naturalistic audio recording of their home environment (appx. 16 hours/child; >730 hours of observation) to measure adult speech input, child vocal

Predicting structure- and control-based parental feeding practices among families with low-income: An ecological approach.

Parental feeding practices (hereafter referred to as feeding practices) influence child weight outcomes, but few studies have identified which obesogenic risk factors shape their feeding practices using an ecological approach, especially among families with low-income. The goals of the current study were to examine the unique contribution of A) child appetitive traits, B) parent psychosocial factors, and C) home environment factors on parental use of structure- and control-based feeding practices. Parents of Head Start preschoolers (N = 253) completed measures of feeding practices, child appet

Home Musical Activities Boost Premature Infants' Language Development.

Infants born prematurely are considered at risk for language development delay and impairments. Using online parental reports, the present study investigated the influence of early musical experience in the home environment (Music@Home Infant Questionnaire) on language development (MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory) while controlling for general enrichment at home (Stim-Q Cognitive Home Environment Questionnaire) and perinatal post-traumatic stress disorder (Perinatal PTSD Questionnaire). The association between living alone and depressive symptoms and the role of pet ownership among Japanese workers.

BACKGROUND: Living alone has been positively associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms. We examined how a combination of living alone and pet ownership relates to depressive symptoms. METHODS: As part of the Japan Epidemiology Collaboration on Occupational Health Study, we conducted a survey on health-related lifestyles, including living arrangements and pet ownership, among 12,763 employees of five companies in 2018-2021. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 11-item Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (cutoff score ≥ 9). A Poisson regression model with a ro

OBJECTIVE: This research dealt with investigating and measuring the contribution of the factors that impact depression in older adults living alone vs. those living with others (hereafter referred to as "not alone") in China. DESIGN: This investigation adopts a cross-sectional research design. The dataset employed for this study comprises data from 2018 the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS). SETTING: The research involved data sourced from China, specifically from 23 of its provinces. From the 8th CLHLS, 12,197 older adults were selected who met the study requirements. ME

Design and Implementation of an Indoor Warning System with Physiological Signal Monitoring for People Isolated at Home.

Due to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, many people have faced in-home isolation, as every suspected patient must stay at home. The behavior of such isolated people needs to be monitored to ensure that they are staying at home. Using a camera is a very practical method. However, smart bracelets are more convenient when personal privacy is a concern or when the blood oxygen value or heart rate must be monitored. In this study, a low-cost indoor positioning system that uses a Bluetooth beacon, a smart bracelet, and an embedded system is proposed. In addition to monitoring whether a person living al
