Methicillin-resistant in Staphylococci is a serious public health issue. It is mostly encoded by the mecA gene. The mecC gene is a new mecA analog responsible for resistance to methicillin in some Staphylococcal clinical isolates. This mecC gene is still underestimated in Egypt. The aim of the current study was to detect mecA and mecC genes in clinical Staphylococci isolates from a tertiary care university hospital in Egypt compared to the different phenotypic methods. A total of 118 Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and 43 coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) were identified from various h

BACKGROUND: The growing burden of antibiotic resistance is a threat to the management of infections. Infections by Escherichia coli are routinely treated with fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agents. Due to their frequent use, there has been increasing resistance to these drugs. We set out to determine the burden of fluoroquinolone resistance among clinical E. coli isolates at the Ho Teaching Hospital, Ghana.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted from July 2018 to June 2019. One hundred and thirty-five E. coli isolates were cultured from various clinical samples. Antimicrobial susc

Introduction: Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium accounts for around 10-23% of nosocomial enterococcal infections and constitutes a relevant therapeutic problem due to its limited susceptibility to antibiotics. The resistance towards glycopeptide antibiotics is mediated by the so-called van genes. Currently, the most common resistance type in Germany is the vanB-type. Little data are available on the molecular epidemiology in Germany. Therefore, an epidemiological typing of Enterococcus faecium isolates with vanB-type resistance from two German hospitals in Essen and Nuremberg was perfo

Hospital infections caused by the opportunistic fungus Candida albicans are increasingly common and life threatening. The first line of defense consists of administering antifungal drugs such as azoles including fluconazole that prevent ergosterol biosynthesis. C. albicans is rapidly developing resistance towards antifungal drugs through various mechanisms including mutations in ERG11 which is a gene involved in the ergosterol biosynthesis pathway. These mutations prevent the binding of the drug and inactivate ergosterol synthesis. Alternatively, upregulation of cell membrane ergosterol conten

Diabetic foot infections (DFIs) are one of the most important reasons for lower limb amputations. An adequate approach to the management of DFI implies control of infection using strategies of tissue debridement and empirical antibiotic treatment based on local microbiology. The aim of this study was to determine the bacterial isolates profile and antibiotic susceptibility patterns in samples from DFI from Latin American centers, on the premise that microbiology of this region differs from that of other continents and influences antimicrobial election. Three hundred and eighty-two samples from

The fungus Candida albicans is both a commensal and an opportunistic human pathogen, present as part of the normal human microflora causing serious mucosal, and systemic life threatening infections. The antifungal drug caspofungin of the echinocandin family is the latest generation of antifungal drugs to be developed. It functions by inhibiting glucan synthase thus weakening the fungal cell wall leading to death. Recently reports of resistance to caspofungin have been reported mainly through mutations in the FKS encoded subunits of glucan synthase at hot spot 1 (amino acids 641 to 649, FSTLSLR

Clostridium difficile is one of the main etiological agents causing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. This study investigated the genetic diversity of 70 toxigenic C. difficile isolates from two Korean hospitals by employing toxinotyping, ribotyping, multilocus sequence typing (MLST), and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Toxin gene amplification resulted in 68 A⁺B⁺ and two A-B+ isolates. Most isolates (95.7-100%) were susceptible to daptomycin, metronidazole, and vancomycin. Seventy C. difficile isolates were classified into five toxinotypes, 19 ribotypes, 16 sequence types (STs), and 33

This study investigated the mechanisms underlying the carbapenem resistance of bloodstream isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa obtained from two Korean hospitals. Of the 79 P. aeruginosa isolates, 22 and 21 were resistant to imipenem and meropenem, respectively. The 22 imipenem-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates were classified into 7 sequence types (STs) and 13 pulsotypes. Twelve imipenem-resistant isolates from one hospital were found to belong to the international clone ST111. Two imipenem-resistant P. aeruginosa ST235 isolates carried the bla IMP-6 gene, but the remaining 20 isolates did not
