Hostility of asocial youth as measured by the TAT and Rorschach.

23 boys and 13 girls, aged 13 to 17 yr., from two homes for delinquents were given the Thematic Apperception Test. Girls were also given the Rorschach. The 1960 Hafner and Kaplan TAT and Rorschach hostility indices were related to the 1977 Luukkonen indices (aggression-inward, aggression-outward, fantasy-aggression, oral, anal and phallic content), to the Pruitt and Spilka empathy index, and to the Neiger reality index. The TAT hostility index for boys was significantly higher than that for girls; boys expressed more physical and girls more verbal hostility in TAT stories. On the Rorschach, ag

Hostile attributional biases in severely aggressive adolescents.

Adolescent boys (N = 128) from a maximum security prison for juvenile offenders were administered a task to assess hostile attributional biases. As hypothesized, these biases were positively correlated with undersocialized aggressive conduct disorder (as indicated by high scores on standardized scales and by psychiatric diagnoses), with reactive-aggressive behavior, and with the number of interpersonally violent crimes committed. Hostile attributional biases were found not to relate to nonviolent crimes or to socialized aggressive behavior disorder. These findings held even when race and estim

Hostile personality characteristics of duodenal ulcer patients.

The aggression profile of patients with Duodenal Peptic Ulcer (DPU) (n = 39) was assessed by means of five self-rating scales (FAF 1, FAF 3, PDS-Extp, PDS-Intp, PDS-Dom) and was compared with a matched normal control group (n = 39) and a psychiatric outpatient sample (n = 67). The DPU group scored significantly higher than normal controls on aggressive excitability and extrapunitiveness (trend in the same direction for potential aggressions), and significantly lower than the psychiatric group on potential aggressions and intropunitiveness. Contrary to expectations, DPU patients did not differ

Hostility and cardiovascular reactivity to stress in women and men.

The relationship of Cook Medley hostility scores (Ho) to blood pressure and heart rate reactivity was examined in 56 women and 56 men. Stress was elicited by an unsolvable anagram task that was described as easily solvable. Both men and women scoring high on Ho had greater blood pressure responses to the task. Those scoring high on Ho also reported more anger in response to the tasks, but anger was not associated with blood pressure reactivity. It was concluded that situations evoking suspiciousness and mistrust rather than anger may be necessary to elicit increased blood pressure reactivity a

Components of hostility and the severity of coronary artery disease.

Previous research has linked various measures of hostility to the prevalence and incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD). The present study sought to determine whether some dimensions of hostility are differentially related to angiographically documented severity of coronary artery disease (CAD). Specifically, a hostility measure that correlates with indices of neuroticism was compared with a hostility measure unrelated to neurotic tendencies. For patients 60 years and younger, results were significant, revealing that neurotic hostility was inversely associated with severity of CAD whereas n

Refining the type A hypothesis: emergence of the hostility complex.

Recent negative research findings have raised questions regarding the robustness of the Type A hypothesis. A growing body of evidence suggests that not all aspects of the global Type A behavior pattern are pathogenic, but only those concerned with hostility and anger. Biologic mechanisms responsible for increased risk of coronary disease in persons with high levels of hostility and anger appear to involve increased cardiovascular and neuroendocrine responses to behavioral challenge, and, possibly, inadequate parasympathetic antagonism of sympathetic nervous system effects. Future research shou

Hostility in cancer patients as an underexplored facet of distress.

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we aimed to assess hostility and to examine its association with formal psychiatric diagnosis, coping, cancer worries, and quality of life in cancer patients. METHODS: The World Health Organization (WHO) Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) to make an ICD-10 (International Classification of Disease) psychiatric diagnosis was applied to 516 cancer outpatients. The patients also completed the Brief Symptom Inventory-53 to assess hostility (BSI-HOS), and the Mini-Mental Adjustment to cancer scale (Mini-MAC). A subset of patients completed the Cance

An examination of the relationship between hoarding symptoms and hostility.

Hoarding disorder (HD) is a persistent and severe psychiatric condition in which individuals are unable to discard possessions, which results in considerable clutter. Individuals who hoard often endorse interpersonal difficulties and social isolation. However, little research has examined mechanisms that may help to explain this relationship. One possible mechanism is hostility, which is characterized by increased sensitivity to real or perceived social threats. The current study examined the relationship between hoarding symptoms and hostility across two undergraduate samples. In study 1, uns

Hostile pelvis: how to avoid permanent stoma.

The aim was to report our experience with delayed colo-anal anastomosis (DCA) to avoid permanent stoma for complex rectal cases evaluating short- and long-term outcomes. Nine patients who underwent DCA from 2011 to 2016 were collected and analysed case by case. We considered medical history and surgical outcomes. Long-term bowel function was evaluated using the Wexner and low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) score at 6, 12 and 24 months. The range from previous surgery and salvage procedure was 337 days. All cases were performed with a full laparoscopic approach. The median length of hospita

Anxious, irritable and hostile depression re-appraised.

BACKGROUND: While classification of the depression disorders currently favors a dimensional model, this study considered the empirical support for a spectrum model linking personality with phenotypic depressive features, specifically examining patients with 'irritable', 'hostile' and 'anxious' depression. METHODS: Pearson correlations were performed for Temperament and Personality (T&P) scales and state depressive patterns (irritable, hostile and anxious) for patients clinically diagnosed with unipolar melancholic and non-melancholic depressive conditions. RESULTS: Irritable depression was m

Emergence of microbial networks as response to hostile environments.

The majority of microorganisms live in complex communities under varying conditions. One pivotal question in evolutionary biology is the emergence of cooperative traits and their sustainment in altered environments or in the presence of free-riders. Co-occurrence patterns in the spatial distribution of biofilms can help define species' identities, and systems biology tools are revealing networks of interacting microorganisms. However, networks of inter-dependencies involving micro-organisms in the planktonic phase may be just as important, with the added complexity that they are not bounded in

Hostility and the risk of peptic ulcer in the GAZEL cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence for an association between hostility and peptic ulcer mainly relies on cross-sectional studies. Prospective studies are rare and have not used a validated measure of hostility. This prospective study aimed to examine the association between hostility and peptic ulcer in the large-scale French GAZEL cohort. METHOD: In 1993, 14,674 participants completed the Buss and Durkee Hostility Inventory. Participants were annually followed-up from 1994 to 2011. Diagnosis of peptic ulcer was self-reported. The association between hostility scores and ulcer incidence was measured by haz

Brucella regulators: self-control in a hostile environment.

Brucella is an important zoonotic pathogen for which no human vaccine exists. In an infected host, Brucella resides in macrophages but must coordinate expression of multiple virulence factors for successful cell entry and trafficking to acquire this replicative niche. Brucella responds to environmental signals to regulate virulence strategies that circumvent or blunt the host immune response. The Brucella quorum sensing system is a nexus of control for several Brucella virulence factors including flagellar genes and the type IV secretion system. Other sensory transduction systems, such as BvrR

Hostility and pain are related to inflammation in older adults.

Chronically elevated systemic inflammation has a dramatic impact on health for older individuals. As stress-related responses, both hostility and pain perception may contribute to inflammation which in turn may maintain negative emotion and pain over time. We used structural equation modeling to examine the degree to which trait hostility and pain were uniquely associated with C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum IL-6 levels over a 6-year span in a sample of older adults. The sample included 113 present or former caregivers of a spouse with dementia and 101 non-caregivers. After accounting for d

Hostile attribution in perceived justification of workplace aggression.

A 10-item Hostile Attribution Scale was developed to test the hypothesis that hostile attribution is predictive of support for aggression in frustrating workplace situations in which a supervisor's motivation is ambiguous. The Hostile Attribution Scale showed good test-retest reliability (.80), but weak internal consistency (alpha=.60). For one workplace scenario (Steve), hostile attribution predicted aggression in the ambiguous but not the definite version of the scenario. For the other scenario (Dan), however, hostile attribution in both the ambiguous and definite versions was equally predic

Random population dispersal in a linear hostile environment.

We consider the Fisher equation and its generalization for an asocial population in a linear, hostile environment. The method of center manifold analysis is used to obtain the time-dependent solution of the former, nonlinear equation. The correct critical habitat size is obtained; in addition, the result for the steady state central density compares favorably with the exact result for relatively large population sizes (up to one half of the carrying capacity). For a model of asocial growth we obtain the expanded criteria for survival. This includes the habitat size, the population size at whic

Dealing with the anger and hostility of those who grieve.

Hospice caregivers are often targets of appropriate or displaced anger from the patients and family members that they try to help. Although anger is often an essential part of the grieving process, it may be difficult to endure. Caregivers must therefore understand the causes and signs of anger in themselves, patients, and family members, and find strategies to reduce the anger. A therapeutic response to anger will better facilitate the grief process as well as the effectiveness and well-being of the hospice caregiver.
