Ionic liquids for the production of insecticidal and microbicidal extracts of the fungus Cantharellus cibarius.

Different ionic liquids were used as solvents for the effective extraction of the active metabolites of the fruit bodies of C. cibarius. The type of ionic liquid was found to play a significant role in this process. We found that the protic ionic liquid 1-[(nonyloxy)methyl]-1H-imidazol-3-ium salicylate (6) is a most-efficient extracting agent, being superior to classical solvents such as AcOEt or hexane. The obtained extracts generally revealed high insecticidal activities against both house fly and cockroach, with similar potencies as the standard pesticides bromfenvinphos or alphacypermethri

Multicomponent synthesis, insecticidal evaluation and molecular dynamics studies of new nicotinonitrile derivatives bearing pyrazole or triazole moieties.

Two series of indolylpyrazole-nicotinonitrile and indolyltriazole-nicotinonitrile (3-cyanopyridine) derivatives were created using one-pot multicomponent reaction. This reaction involved 3-(cyanoacetyl)indole, acetylpyrazole, or acetyltriazole, and aromatic aldehydes. These reactions were carried out in methanol with conventional heat in the presence of ammonium acetate. The structure of the new products was confirmed using elemental analysis, NMR, and infrared spectroscopy. The synthesized compounds were then tested for their insecticidal activity against two disease vectors, Musca domestica

Oral myiasis--a case report.

Myiasis, a term introduced by William Hope in 1840, refers to the invasion of tissues and organs of animals and human wounds and certain body cavities by the dipteran larvae, which manifests as subcutaneous furunculoid or boil-like lesions. Oral myiasis is a rare pathology and a risk to the patient's life. A higher incidence is seen in rural areas, affecting the tropical and subtropical zones of Africa and America. It can be secondary to medical or anatomic conditions, such as cancrum oris, neglected mandibular fracture, cerebral palsy, mouth breathing, anterior open bite, incompetent lips, an

An analysis of geographic and intersexual chemical variation in venoms of the spider Tegenaria agrestis (Agelenidae).

The spider Tegenaria agrestis is native to Europe, where it is considered medically innocuous. This species recently colonized the US where it has been accused of bites that result in necrotic lesions and systemic effects in humans. One possible explanation of this pattern is the US spiders have unique venom characteristics. This study compares whole venoms from US and European populations to look for unique US characteristics, and to increase our understanding of venom variability within species. This study compared venoms from T. agrestis males and females from Marysville, Washington (US), T

Cross-resistance, genetics, and realized heritability of resistance to fipronil in the house fly, Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae): a potential vector for disease transmission.

Houseflies, Musca domestica (L.), are ubiquitous pests that have the potential to spread a variety of pathogens to humans, poultries, and dairies. Pesticides are commonly used for the management of this pest. Fipronil is a GABA-gated chloride channel-inhibiting insecticide that has been commonly used for the management of different pests including M. domestica throughout the world. Many pests have developed resistance to this insecticide. A field-collected strain of M. domestica was selected with fipronil for continuous 11 generations to assess the cross-resistance, genetics, and realized heri

Clausena anisata and Dysphania ambrosioides essential oils: from ethno-medicine to modern uses as effective insecticides.

Dysphania ambrosioides (L.) Mosyakin & Clemants (Amaranthaceae) and Clausena anisata (Willd.) Hook. f. ex Benth. (Rutaceae) are two aromatic species traditionally used in Cameroon to repel and kill insects. The present work was carried out to substantiate this traditional use and to evaluate the possible incorporation in commercial botanical insecticides of their essential oils (EOs). The EOs were distilled from leaves of C. anisata and aerial parts of D. ambrosioides and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The insecticidal activity of both EOs was investigated against th

Scanning mutagenesis of omega-atracotoxin-Hv1a reveals a spatially restricted epitope that confers selective activity against insect calcium channels.

We constructed a complete panel of alanine mutants of the insect-specific calcium channel blocker omega-atracotoxin-Hv1a. Lethality assays using these mutant toxins identified three spatially contiguous residues, Pro10, Asn27, and Arg35, that are critical for insecticidal activity against flies (Musca domestica) and crickets (Acheta domestica). Competitive binding assays using radiolabeled omega-atracotoxin-Hv1a and neuronal membranes prepared from the heads of American cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) confirmed the importance of these three residues for binding of the toxin to target calci

RETRACTED: Curcumin-Injected Musca domestica Larval Hemolymph: Cecropin Upregulation and Potential Anticancer Effect.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Over recent decades, much attention has been given to imply the natural products in cancer therapy alone or in combination with other established procedures. Insects have a rich history in traditional medicine across the globe, which holds promise for the future of natural product drug discovery. Cecropins, peptides produced by insects, are components of a defense system against infections and are well known to exert antimicrobial and antitumor capabilities. The present study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the role of curcumin in enhancing the anticancer effect of Musca domestica la

Two hytrosaviruses, MdSGHV and GpSGHV, induce distinct cytopathologies in their respective host insects.

Recently, a new virus family (Hytrosaviridae) was proposed for double-stranded DNA viruses that cause salivary gland hypertrophy in their dipteran hosts. The two type species, MdSGHV and GpSGHV, induce similar gross pathology and share several morphological, biological, and molecular characteristics. This histological study revealed profound differences in the cytopathology of these viruses supporting their previously proposed placement in different genera.

Mechanistic insights into the inhibitory effects of eukaryotically expressed Sarcotoxin II 50 on Klebsiella pneumoniae invasion into pulmonary epithelial cells.

Hypervirulent (hvKP) and classical (cKP) strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae are major contributors to serious hospital-acquired infections, and the growing issue of antibiotic resistance highlights the urgent need for new antimicrobial approaches. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of Sarcotoxin II 50, an insect-derived antimicrobial peptide, on K. pneumoniae. Our findings show that Sarcotoxin II 50 exerts potent antibacterial activity by impairing capsular polysaccharide (CPS) production and fimbrial formation, which compromises bacterial adhesion and colonization capacity. Sustainable Protein Transitions: A Comprehensive Review of Insect Meal in Broiler Diets-Nutritional Value, Immunomodulatory Effects, Gut Health Interactions, and Future Perspectives.

Broiler production keeps intensifying, and the environmental cost of the protein sources that feed it, principally soybean meal and fishmeal, has become harder to justify. Insect meal, derived chiefly from black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens), yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), and housefly larvae (Musca domestica), has emerged as a candidate able to address nutritional, immunological, and ecological goals at once. This review evaluates the evidence on the nutritional composition, digestibility, growth performance, immunomodulatory mechanisms, and gut health effects of insect meal in

Evaluating Musca domestica as an alternative to Lucilia sericata in maggot-assisted wound healing: A comparative study of therapeutic efficacy in a murine model.

The emergence of antibiotic-resistant infections has renewed interest in Maggot Debridement Therapy (MDT) as a potent biotherapy for wound care. While Lucilia sericata is the gold standard species, its specialized rearing requirements and associated costs can be a barrier to implementation in resource-limited settings. This study evaluated the common housefly, Musca domestica, as a potential alternative for treating Pseudomonas aeruginosa-infected burn wounds in a rat model. In this study, seventy rats were assigned to seven groups: Control (C), Infected control (B), Antibiotic only (BA), L. s

The Drosophila melanogaster homologue of an insect calcitonin-like diuretic peptide stimulates V-ATPase activity in fruit fly Malpighian tubules.

The Drosophila melanogaster homologue of an insect calcitonin-like diuretic hormone was identified in a BLAST search of the Drosophila genome database. The predicted 31-residue amidated peptide (D. melanogaster DH31; Drome-DH31) was synthesised and tested for activity on fruit fly Malpighian tubules. It increases tubule secretion by approximately 35 % of the response obtained with a myokinin from the housefly Musca domestica (muscakinin; Musdo-K) and has an EC50 of 4.3 nmol x l(-1). The diuretic activities of Drome-DH31 and Musdo-K were additive when tested at threshold and supra-maximal conce

Pathogen transmission in relation to feeding and digestion by haematophagous Arthropods.

The blood feeding habit, especially among opportunist feeders such as tabanids and Stomoxys is known to result in transmission of diseases for which the vectors are not the obligate or alternate hosts. Thus, mechanical transmission of trypanosomes such as T. vivax can occur in cattle herds outside tsetse fly areas where tabanids are actively feeding. In the case of Yaws, mechanical transmission of the spirochaetes by eye flies (Hippelates pallipes) in the West Indies is thought to be most likely. The spirochaetes remain motile in the pharynx and oesophageal diverticula for several hours but ar

In vitro Acquisition and Retention of Low-Pathogenic Avian Influenza H9N2 by Musca domestica (Diptera: Muscidae).

Avian influenza virus (AIV) H9N2 emerged in the 1990s as an economically important disease in poultry and occasionally infects humans and other mammals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the acquisition and retention of H9N2 AIV on and within the house fly, Musca domestica (Linnaeus 1758), under laboratory conditions. In first experiment, 100 adult house flies were divided into control and treatment groups equally. Treatment group was fed with a meal containing H9N2 virus, while control group was supplied with an identical meal without virus. Fifteen minutes after exposure in each group, f

Two viruses that cause salivary gland hypertrophy in Glossina pallidipes and Musca domestica are related and form a distinct phylogenetic clade.

Glossina pallidipes and Musca domestica salivary gland hypertrophy viruses (GpSGHV and MdSGHV) replicate in the nucleus of salivary gland cells causing distinct tissue hypertrophy and reduction of host fertility. They share general characteristics with the non-occluded insect nudiviruses, such as being insect-pathogenic, having enveloped, rod-shaped virions, and large circular double-stranded DNA genomes. MdSGHV measures 65x550 nm and contains a 124 279 bp genome (approximately 44 mol% G+C content) that codes for 108 putative open reading frames (ORFs). GpSGHV, measuring 50x1000 nm, contains a
