BACKGROUND: Because obstructive sleep apnea is known to be an important preexisting factor causing chronic disease, many investigations have been done recently. There have been few reports regarding the posterior pharyngeal airway after clockwise rotation of maxillomandibular complex. Because the 2-jaw surgery in class III patients could cause obstructive sleep apnea or snoring, we investigated the posterior pharyngeal airway change of the clockwise maxillomandibular complex in the surgery-first orthognathic approach for the correction of class III dentofacial deformities.
METHODS: A cephalom

The most common cause of laryngotracheal stenosis is trauma. The stenotic area may involve the larynx, subglottis, or trachea. A hyoid bone graft has been used in 22 cases for reconstruction of the stenotic area. The hyoid graft may be used with other concomitant laryngeal procedures. A vascularized sternohyoid--hyoid graft has been used in somes cases. Of the 22 cases all but 3 have been successful. The advantages of the hyoid graft are: 1. Firm graft to maintain the architecture of the lumen. 2. Accessibility in the same operating field. 3. Patient's own graft material decreases immune rejec

Background: The anatomical position of the hyoid bone and the morphological characteristics of the soft palate play a key role in upper airway patency, craniofacial balance, and the coordination of functional structures. These features may vary depending on skeletal pattern and gender. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between hyoid bone position, soft palate morphology, skeletal classification, and gender using lateral cephalograms. Methods: A total of 120 individuals (60 females and 60 males) were classified as Skeletal Class I, II, or III based on the ANB (A Point-Nasion-B Point

The hyoid bone and larynx in human neonates are positioned as high as in other mammals. However, during postnatal life, they descend relative to the hard palate more rapidly compared with the horizontal growth of the oral cavity. This process is completed through the descent of the laryngeal skeleton relative to the hyoid, and through the descent of the hyoid relative to the cranial base. Thus, the human supralaryngeal vocal tract (SVT) develops to form a two-tube configuration with equally long horizontal and vertical parts. Longitudinal studies on living chimpanzee infants show that the desc

Thyroglossal duct (TGD) remnants in the form of cysts or fistulas usually present as midline neck masses and they are removed along with the central body of the hyoid bone (Sistrunk's procedure). For other pathologies associated with the TGD tract, the latter operation might be not necessary. In the present report, a case of a TGD lipoma is presented and a systematic review of the pertinent literature was performed. We present the case of a 57-year-old woman with a pathologically confirmed TGD lipoma who underwent transcervical excision without resecting the hyoid bone. Recurrence was not obse

BACKGROUND: Oral breathing and downward tongue position are generally associated with transverse hypo-development of the upper maxilla. Rapid maxillary expansion aims to expand the upper maxilla transversely. This pilot retrospective clinical study evaluates the effects of rapid maxillary expansion therapy on the resting position of the tongue, on the position of the hyoid bone and on clinical respiratory pattern in a group of mouth breathing patients with mono- or bilateral cross-bites due to transversal deficits of the maxilla.
METHODS: A total of 39 prepubertal oral breathing subjects with

Hyoid suspension is a procedure to stabilise the retrolingual space in obstructive sleep apnoea. Using the Hörmann technique, a steel wire is slung around the body of the hyoid and fixed to the upper rim of the thyroid cartilage. It was observed, however, that the steel wire may lie very superficially to the pharyngeal mucosa. Evaluation of computed tomography (CT) scans showed a mean distance between the hyoid and the pharynx of only 3 mm. A modification is presented by threading a steel wire through a hole that is drilled through the hyoid bone. Thus pharyngeal exposure of the steel ligature

Current methods for hyoid suspension in the treatment of upper airway (UA) collapse have some shortcomings. The application of a magnetic force to displace the hyoid bone has been reported to improve UA geometry in a human cadaver model. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a novel magnetic device for improving UA geometry and to verify its safety and feasibility in beagle canines. Ten healthy beagle canines were assigned to receive hyoid suspension using a newly designed magnetic device. An improvement in UA geometry was evaluated by laryngeal inspection and X-ray imaging before and after h

Dysphagia in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) increases the risk of malnutrition, dehydration, and aspiration pneumonia. Kinematic analysis of videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) can provide detailed movement of the hyoid bone, revealing abnormalities of swallowing in ALS patients. We developed an automated kinematic analysis program (AKAP) that analyzes the trajectory of the hyoid bone via a visual tracking method. The aim of this study was to investigate the hyoid movement in ALS patients using AKAP and compare it with non-dysphagic subjects. Thirty ALS patients who underwent VFSS i

Currently, there is no information available regarding craniofacial morphology of Croatian patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The aim of the study was to determine the craniofacial characteristics of patients with OSA and to assess the association of cephalometric and anthropometric variables related to craniofacial morphology with the apnea hypopnea index (AHI). Anthropometric measurements and upright lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 20 male patients with OSA and 20 male controls. The 20 OSA patients were classified into two groups on the basis of body mass index

Eagle syndrome is classically defined by symptomatic elongation of the styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament. While elongated styloid processes are relatively common radiographic findings, extreme bony hypertrophy with direct involvement of the hyoid bone is exceedingly rare. We report the case of a 69-year-old male with progressive unilateral odynophagia and neck pain found to have massive hyperostosis of the left styloid process, measuring approximately 9 cm in craniocaudal length, with abutment, erosion, and fibrous union to the lateral body and greater horn of the hyo

Hyoid position and swallowing-related displacement has been studied in healthy adults and adults with dysphagia, but research is limited in children. The aim of this study was to investigate feasibility of visualizing and measuring position and swallowing-related displacement of the hyoid bone in children. We explored relationships between hyoid displacement, age and aspiration risk scores. Pediatric swallowing data were extracted from a videofluoroscopy database containing recordings from 133 children aged 9 days to 21 years (mean 36 months, SD 3 years) referred for videofluoroscopy due to co
