Antibacterial activity is the most widely studied aspect of plant extracts. Antibiotics extensively produced and consumed in large quantities, have proved to be problematic due to various types of adverse effects. The development of bacterial resistance to currently available antibiotics has necessitated the search for new antibacterial agents. One of the alternative strategies for fighting antibiotic- resistant bacteria is the use of natural antimicrobial substances such as plant extracts. We tested the antimicrobial activity of nine extracts from different plants against pathogenic bacteria

The 17-item Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD-17) Anxiety/Somatization factor includes six items: Anxiety (psychic), Anxiety (somatic), Somatic Symptoms (gastrointestinal), Somatic Symptoms (general), Hypochondriasis and Insight. This study examines the relationship between early changes (defined as those observed between baseline and week 1) in these HAMD-17 Anxiety/Somatization Factor items and treatment outcome among major depressive disorder (MDD) patients who participated in a study comparing the antidepressant efficacy of a standardized extract of hypericum with both placebo and

The specialized metabolism of St. John's wort, Hypericum perforatum L., is a key focus in medicinal plant research due to its hallmark bioactive compounds hyperforin and hypericin. Known for its traditional medicinal uses dating back to ancient times, St. John's wort is currently used for mild depression therapy. Recent research works have shed light on the biosynthesis of various metabolites in this plant, such as flavonoids, xanthones, hyperforin, and hypericin. The elucidation of these pathways, along with the discovery of novel enzymes like hyperforin synthase, support the pharmaceutical r

We describe the case of a patient who developed depression following bilateral orchidectomy for cryptorchidism. He was treated with a conventional selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressant, but continued to take St John's wort (hypericum) against medical advice. He subsequently developed a manic episode. We discuss postulated modes of action of St John's wort and the possible aetiological importance of testosterone replacement and abnormal gonadotrophin levels in this case.

We report a case of severe unilateral epistaxis requiring surgical arrest of bleeding, via endoscopic sphenopalatine artery ligation and anterior ethmoidal artery ligation. This followed recreational nasal insertion of St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum). Interactions between this substance and prescribed drugs have been described following oral ingestion. However, this unusual case highlights a further, worrying potential rhinological side effect of this substance.

Trichomonas vaginalis causes trichomoniasis, a neglected sexually transmitted disease. Due to severe health consequences and treatment failure, new therapeutic alternatives are crucial. Phloroglucinols from southern Brazilian Hypericum species demonstrated anti-T. vaginalis and anti-Leishmania amazonensis activities. The modulation of biochemical pathways involved in the control of inflammatory response by ectonucleotidases, NTPDase, and ecto-5'-nucleotidase represents new targets for combating protozoa. This study investigated the activity of phloroglucinol derivatives of Hypericum species fr

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of extracts of commercially available Curcuma longa, Citrus lemon, Hamamelis virginiana and Hypericum perforatum as photosensitizers in Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT). Each photosensitizer (PS) was analyzed in a spectrophotometer between 350 and 750 nm to determine the ideal light source. Once the absorption bands were determined, three light sources were selected. To determine the concentration of use, the compounds were tested at different concentrations on bovine dentin samples to evaluate the risk of staining. Once the concentration

Problems of eye contact and expressive language limit the effectiveness of educational and behavioral interventions in patients suffering from pervasive developmental disorders. For that reason, additive psychopharmacological interventions are sometimes needed to improve symptomatology. In our preliminary open trial, three male patients with autistic disorder, diagnosed by ICD-10 criteria, completed an open trial of St John's Wort. Subjects were included in the study if their eye contact and expressive language was inadaequate for their developmental level and if they had not tolerated or resp

Hypericum japonicum is traditionally used as a folk medicine to treat cholestasis and hepatitis. Quercetin 7-rhamnoside (Q7R) is one of the main flavonoid components of Hypericum japonicum and has been rarely studied. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the antioxidant activity and hepatoprotective potential of Q7R. In the in vitro experiments, DPPH, ABTS and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays were first performed to assess the antioxidant properties of Q7R, and then a H₂O₂-induced oxidative damage cellular model was used to determine the cytoprotective and antioxidant pr

The crude extracts of HYPERICUM species native to South Brazil showed analgesic and antidepressant-like effects in rodents. The chemical characterization of these species revealed that they are rich in flavonoids and phloroglucinol derivatives. In the present study a detailed investigation was performed on the activities of hyperoside (HYP), a common flavonoid in the genus HYPERICUM. Hyperoside was obtained from the aerial parts of H. CAPRIFOLIATUM by chromatographic procedures. Mice treated with single doses (10, 20 and 40 mg/kg i.p.) did not present signs of toxicity or weight loss. At 20 an

Hyperforin, the main antidepressant component of Hypericum extract, is not stable with regard to heat and light. Therefore, we investigated a newly synthetized derivative, hyperforin acetate. Herein we demonstrate its efficacy in animal models sensitive to antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs. In the forced swimming test, triple administration of hyperforin (5-20 mg/kg) significantly reduced the immobility time of rats, while in the learned helplessness test a daily treatment of 10 mg/kg for seven consecutive days was necessary to elicit an antidepressant effect. In the elevated plus-maze and i

St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) has been extensively studied and reviewed for its use in depression; however, there is less salient discussion on its clinical application for a range of other psychiatric disorders. This article outlines the current evidence of the efficacy of St John's wort in common psychiatric disorders, including major depression, bipolar depression, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, and somatization disorder. Mechanisms of action, including emerging pharmacogenetic data, safety, and clinical considerations are al

INTRODUCTION: Congenital changes related to Spina Bifida (SB) include congenital clubfoot (PTC), also known as equinovarus congenital clubfoot. Skin pressure ulcers represent a frequent complication associated with SB and PTC, determined by both sensitivity deficits and skeletal alterations of plantar support. This conditions can lead to the onset of frequent neurotrophic skin ulcers.
CASE REPORT: 72-year-old female patient suffering from spina bifida with congenital clubfoot condition, complicated by ulcerative lesion in the plantar region with fistula and infection (Proteus Mirabilis). An i

PURPOSE: St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is an herbal remedy that is widely used in the treatment of depression. Recent clinical data have demonstrated that St John's wort extracts interfere with the action of various drugs and possibly also with combined oral contraceptives. Therefore, we investigated the effects of a St John's wort extract (Ze 117) with low hyperforin content on the pharmacokinetics of ethinylestradiol and 3-ketodesogestrel.
METHOD: Sixteen healthy female volunteers, who had taken a low-dose oral contraceptive (Lovelle contains 0.02 mg ethinylestradiol + 0.15 mg desog

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: Preliminary data have shown that St John's wort might possess some specific efficacy in patients with somatoform complaints. Therefore, the efficacy of the Hypericum extract LI 160 in patients with somatoform disorders should be studied in a double-blind placebo-controlled fashion.
METHODS: This was a multicentre, randomised, placebo controlled, 6-week trial comparing the efficacy of LI 160 (600 mg/day) and placebo in 151 out-patients suffering from somatization disorder (ICD-10: F45.0), undifferentiated somatoform disorder (F45.1), or somatoform autonomic dysfunction

Defined natural products are often framed as intrinsically safer multi-target alternatives to selective drugs, but this assumption is not pharmacologically justified. This critical review evaluates product-specific adjunctive evidence in respiratory allergy, inflammatory bowel disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, and insomnia. MEDLINE/PubMed records published from 2020 to 23 June 2026 were prioritized, while earlier pivotal randomized trials and quantitative safety studies were retained. Evidence was gated by product identity, human exposure, exposure-compatible target engagement, incremental

There is much more seasonal difference in higher latitudes than in lower latitudes. In a significant portion of the population of the northern United States, the shorter days of fall and winter precipitate a syndrome that can consist of depression, fatigue, hypersomnolence, hyperphagia, carbohydrate craving, weight gain, and loss of libido. If these symptoms persist in the winter, abate as the days grow longer, and disappear in the summer, the diagnosis of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can be made. Many hypotheses exist regarding the biochemical mechanisms behind the predisposition toward
