Brain 5-HT Deficiency Prevents Antidepressant-Like Effects of High-Fat-Diet and Blocks High-Fat-Diet-Induced GSK3β Phosphorylation in the Hippocampus.

Obesity is associated with an increased risk of depression and anxiety disorders, but the nature of the relationship(s) between obesity and mental illness remains highly controversial. Some argue that depression and anxiety lead to increased consumption of "comfort foods," the intake of which reduces negative affect and promotes obesity. In contrast, others have theorized that negative affect results from chronic excessive consumption of highly palatable foods. The brain serotonin (5-HT) system has long been implicated in both the development and treatment of mental illness. Preclinical studie

Sexual changes in hemiparetic patients.

Eighty-six patients, each with hemiparesis caused by a single stroke, were studied to assess the changes in sexual life experienced after the onset of the illness. Clinical data were collected, and a questionnaire concerning both sexual behavior and feelings about sexuality was administered to the patients and their spouses. Twenty-four couples were eliminated from further analysis because of a discrepancy between husband and wife in the answers concerning sexual behavior after stroke. A marked decline in sexual activity after stroke was found in both genders; other aspects of sexual behavior

Masculine norms predict lower COVID-19 prevention behavior: a longitudinal investigation of American men during phase I of the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Gender disparities in COVID-19 prevention were likely driven by male gender socialization, but no research has tested beliefs that prospectively connect endorsement of masculine norms to reduced COVID-19 prevention behavior among men. PURPOSE: We explored whether men's endorsement of masculine norms influenced COVID-19 prevention behavior via illness-related beliefs and prevention intentions. METHOD: Early in the COVID-19 pandemic (April 2020), American men (N = 355; Mage = 46.61, 78.9% White) reported their baseline prevention behavior, masculine norms, COVID-19 strength beliefs

Addiction and suicide: A review.

BACKGROUND: Addiction specialists frequently find themselves faced with suicidal behavior in their addictions patients. Although many addiction treatment programs will not accept clients with recent suicidal behavior, up to 40% of patients seeking treatment for substance dependence report a history of suicide attempt(s).(1-3) Risk factors for suicide have been studied in the general population and among people with mental illness, less is known about risk factors in those with substance use disorders and co-occurring disorders. METHODS: Studies, psychological autopsies and recent reviews on r

[Behavioral aspects of chronic pain syndromes].

The knowledge of biological pain mechanisms are not sufficient for the understanding of patients with chronic pain syndromes such as low back, cervicobrachial and muscle pain. Psychological and psychosocial aspects play important roles in the setting and perpetuation of symptoms. Mood and anxiety disorders, secondary gains such as early retirement and financial compensations, must all be acknowledged by the physician as possible contributors to the symptoms. Abnormal illness behavior may better characterize patients with chronic pain syndromes. Behavior observation, which is akin to medical pr

A false dichotomy? Mental illness and lone-actor terrorism.

We test whether significant differences in mental illness exist in a matched sample of lone- and group-based terrorists. We then test whether there are distinct behavioral differences between lone-actor terrorists with and without mental illness. We then stratify our sample across a range of diagnoses and again test whether significant differences exist. We conduct a series of bivariate, multivariate, and multinomial statistical tests using a unique dataset of 119 lone-actor terrorists and a matched sample of group-based terrorists. The odds of a lone-actor terrorist having a mental illness is

Needs-based planning for persons with serious mental illness residing in intermediate care facilities.

This study examined the association of clinical status to mental health service use among persons with mental illness living in residential care. Two hundred residents with a chart diagnosis of schizophrenia were randomly selected from four intermediate care facilities. The severity of psychiatric illness-community mental health (SPI-CMH) scale was used to assess clinical status and symptom severity according to three dimensions: symptoms and functioning, risk behaviors, and complication to illness. Lower levels of severity of psychiatric illness were associated with participation in workshops

Peer relationships and emotional well-being of youngsters with sickle cell disease.

Comparisons with measures of peer relationships and emotional well-being were made between youngsters with sickle cell disease (SCD) and same-classroom comparison peers. Relative to the comparison subjects, females with SCD were perceived by peers as being less sociable and less well accepted; males with SCD were perceived as being less aggressive than comparison peers. For both males and females with SCD, no other differences were identified on numerous measures of emotional well-being. None of the multiple measures of illness severity were significantly related to measures of psychological a

Disabling repetitive behaviors in Parkinson's disease.

We report on 6 patients with Parkinson's disease who developed severe repetitive behavior, 2 with pathological gambling and 4 with cleaning, rearranging, and ordering rituals. The onset of repetitive behaviors was not associated with changes in antiparkinsonian medications, the behavior did not improve after reductions in dopaminergic therapy, and thus they seem to be part of the underlying illness. The disabling cleaning/rearranging/ordering behaviors had associated features of hypomania, occurred exclusively during motor on periods, and often occurred nocturnally. The repetitive behavior res

Treatment of tobacco use disorders in smokers with serious mental illness: toward clinical best practices.

Addiction to tobacco-derived nicotine remains highly prevalent in the United States, with 18% using daily, and 53% of those with serious mental illness using daily. While smokers with serious mental illness have been excluded from most large nicotine-dependence treatment studies, a growing evidence base is available to guide clinicians in assisting their patients with psychiatric illness to quit smoking. The aim of this review is to present the evidence on safety and efficacy of smoking cessation interventions for those with serious mental illness. Smokers with schizophrenia spectrum disorders

Structure of mania: depressive, irritable, and psychotic clusters with different retrospectively-assessed course patterns of illness in randomized clinical trial participants.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the structure of manic episodes by determining whether there was evidence for distinct groups of patients differing in clinical characteristics and course of illness. METHODS: The subjects were 162 patients hospitalized for manic episodes who underwent comprehensive evaluations of behavior, symptoms, and history before a treatment study. Pretreatment behavior ratings (Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia, rated by clinicians, and Affective Disorder Rating Scale, rated by nurses) entered a principal components factor analysis, followed by a cluster ana

Heatstroke Awareness and Preventive Behaviors Among Automotive Maintenance Workers in Outdoor Environments: A Cross-Sectional Study in Japan.

Background/Objectives: Global climate change has increased occupational heat exposure, posing significant risks to outdoor workers. Automotive maintenance workers face high temperatures, radiant heat from machinery, and physically demanding tasks; however, their awareness and preventive behaviors regarding heat-related illness remain insufficiently understood. This study examined heatstroke awareness and preventive behaviors among automotive maintenance workers in Japan. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted among 371 automotive maintenance workers. Self-reported heat-relat

Psychiatric disorders and aggression in the printed media: is there a link? A central European perspective.

BACKGROUND: A content analysis was used to describe the association between psychiatric disorders and aggression in the printed media in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. METHODS: Articles were chosen from the most widely read daily newspapers and magazines in both countries during five one-week periods in 2007. A coding manual was developed and a content analysis was performed. Aggressive behavior was assessed by two separate categories - the role of the mentally ill person in the violent act (perpetrator/victim) and the type of aggressive act (homicide, suicide). RESULTS: A total of 375 art

Risks for re-hospitalization of persons with severe mental illness living in rehabilitation care settings.

BACKGROUND: The high rates of psychiatric re-hospitalizations (also termed "revolving door") presents a "wicked problem" which requires a systematic and holistic approach to its resolution. Israel's mental-health rehabilitation law provides a comprehensive set of services intended to support the ability of persons with severe mental illness to rely on community rather than in-patient facilities for their ongoing care needs. Guided by the Health Behavior Model, we examined the relationship between psychiatric re-hospitalizations and the three Health Behavior Model factors (predisposing factor:

HIV Risk, Substance Use, and Personality Characteristics among Adults with History of Serious Mental Illness.

The present study examined the relationship between characteristics associated with personality disorders, substance use, and HIV risk among adults with a history of serious mental illness. Participants included 103 adults with antisocial or borderline personality disorder, serious mental illness, and recent HIV risk behavior. The sample was predominately male (64%), diverse (42% African American and 13% Hispanic), and homeless/marginally housed (76%). In order to examine the relationship between personality characteristics and risk we constructed a risk index comprising key symptoms of antiso

The association of irritable bowel syndrome and somatization disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and somatization disorder (SD) are defined by nonobjective symptoms that overlap considerably. Psychiatric symptoms associated with IBS may originate from SD in IBS patients. Previous studies of IBS have not considered SD separately from IBS. METHODS: This study explored psychiatric symptoms and illness behavior in IBS in relation to SD. A total of 50 outpatients with IBS or ulcerative colitis (UC) were evaluated with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and Illness Behavior Questionnaire. RESULTS: Definite or probable SD was diagnosed in

Health risk behavior of youth in foster care.

PROBLEM: Many adolescent health problems are predominantly caused by risk behavior. Foster adolescents have disproportionately poor health; therefore, identification of risk behavior is critical. METHOD: Data from a larger study were analyzed to investigate the health risk behavior of 56 youth in foster care using the Child Health and Illness Profile-Adolescent Edition. FINDINGS: Data indicated that youth in foster care had some increased risk behavior when compared with a normative adolescent population. Younger adolescents and those in relative placement had less risky behavior. Risk behav
