Dual-channel compression mapping network with fused attention mechanism for medical image segmentation.

Accurate image segmentation is the key to quantitative analysis and recognition of pathological tissues in medical imaging technology, which can provide important technical support for medical diagnosis and treatment. However, the task of lesion segmentation is particularly challenging due to the difficulty in identifying edges, the complexity of different tissues, and the variability in their shapes. To address these challenges, we propose a dual-channel compression mapping network (DCM-Net) with fused attention mechanism for medical image segmentation. Firstly, a dual-channel compression map

Acquisition and analysis of 3D mandibular movement using a device based on electromagnetic sensors and a neural network.

In dental medicine, the study of mandibular movement has an important role in oral rehabilitation as it allows diagnosis of pathologies in the temporomandibular joint and the definition of adequate treatment plans. In this paper, a new device specially developed for the acquisition and analysis of 3D mandibular movement is presented. A facial arc is adopted as its main support structure and electromagnetic sensors are employed to acquire the mandibular movement. A neural network is used to transform the electrical signals output by the sensors into 3D Cartesian coordinates. A custom-made compu

Assessment of image quality and detectability in computed tomography: Inter-laboratory comparison of Fourier-based metrics.

BACKGROUND: The task-based assessment of image quality in computed tomography (CT) is increasingly used for benchmarking, optimizing acquisition and reconstruction parameters, and predicting observers' performance. To achieve consistent and reproducible results rely on standardized methodologies and guidelines. PURPOSE: This study performed an inter-laboratory comparison to evaluate the consistency of CT image quality metrics and assess inter-laboratory variability. METHODS: Six series of images of a Catphan 500 phantom were acquired at three dose levels (1.5/5.0/15.0 mGy) with two (standard

Fully Automated Colon Delineation and Volume Estimation in T2-Weighted MRI with a 2D U-Net.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to provide an objective, accurate and fast evaluation of the colon for clinical assessment of gastrointestinal diseases, such as chronic constipation. Accurate colon segmentation is a labor-intensive task, prone to interobserver variability. This study presents a method for automatic colon segmentation in T2-weighted MRI images, using 297 MRI scans from 72 healthy subjects and a neural network based on the 2D U-Net architecture. The presented network provided a Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 0.82 ± 0.04 when compared to ground truth data (p=0.722

Beyond Macrostructure: Is There a Role for Radiomics Analysis in Neuroimaging ?

The most commonly used neuroimaging biomarkers of brain structure, particularly in neurodegenerative diseases, have traditionally been summary measurements from ROIs derived from structural MRI, such as volume and thickness. Advances in MR acquisition techniques, including high-field imaging, and emergence of learning-based methods have opened up opportunities to interrogate brain structure in finer detail, allowing investigators to move beyond macrostructural measurements. On the one hand, superior signal contrast has the potential to make appearance-based metrics that directly analyze intens

Multiple-object 2-D-3-D registration for noninvasive pose identification of fracture fragments.

This paper presents a multiple-object 2-D-3-D registration technique for noninvasively identifying the poses of fracture fragments in the space of a preoperative treatment plan. The plan is made by manipulating and aligning computer models of individual fracture fragments that are segmented from a diagnostic computed tomography. The registration technique iteratively updates the treatment plan and matches its digitally reconstructed radiographs to a small number of intraoperative fluoroscopic images. The proposed approach combines an image similarity metric that integrates edge information wit

Video inpainting under constrained camera motion.

A framework for inpainting missing parts of a video sequence recorded with a moving or stationary camera is presented in this work. The region to be inpainted is general: it may be still or moving, in the background or in the foreground, it may occlude one object and be occluded by some other object. The algorithm consists of a simple preprocessing stage and two steps of video inpainting. In the preprocessing stage, we roughly segment each frame into foreground and background. We use this segmentation to build three image mosaics that help to produce time consistent results and also improve th

Validation of uPath HER2 dual-colour dual in-situ hybridisation image analysis tool for HER2/neu testing in breast cancer.

AIMS: HER2/neu gene is amplified in 15%-20% of invasive breast cancers (IBCs), serving as critical prognostic and predictive marker. HER2-targeted therapies have improved outcomes for HER2-positive patients, highlighting the importance of accurate assessment. Immunohistochemistry is commonly used for screening HER2 overexpression, with equivocal cases reflex tested using in situ hybridisation (ISH) methods like fluorescence (FISH) or dual-colour dual ISH (D-DISH). While FISH displays quantitative accuracy, it is expensive, time-consuming and technically demanding. D-DISH offers a faster, autom

Computer-aided diagnosis tool for cervical cancer screening with weakly supervised localization and detection of abnormalities using adaptable and explainable classifier.

While pap test is the most common diagnosis methods for cervical cancer, their results are highly dependent on the ability of the cytotechnicians to detect abnormal cells on the smears using brightfield microscopy. In this paper, we propose an explainable region classifier in whole slide images that could be used by cyto-pathologists to handle efficiently these big images (100,000x100,000 pixels). We create a dataset that simulates pap smears regions and uses a loss, we call classification under regression constraint, to train an efficient region classifier (about 66.8% accuracy on severity cl

Vision foundation model for 3D magnetic resonance imaging segmentation, classification, and registration.

Vision foundation models (VFMs) are pre-trained on extensive image datasets to learn general representations. These models can subsequently be fine-tuned for specific downstream tasks, markedly boosting performance across a broad range of applications. However, existing vision foundation models that claim to be applicable to various downstream tasks are mostly pre-trained on imaging modalities with different characteristics than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), those differences in imaging principles, signal characteristics, and data distribution may hinder their practical performance and ver

Shifting perspective: effectively incorporating the dixon method into abdominal and pelvic MRI interpretations.

The Dixon method is a chemical shift MRI technique that separates fat and water signals to generate four image sets- in-phase, out-of-phase, fat-only, and water-only- from a single acquisition. This approach enhances lesion characterization, improves fat suppression, and identifies materials that produce magnetic susceptibility artifacts, such as gas, iron, blood products, or metal. Despite its diagnostic potential, Dixon imaging is often underutilized due to limited understanding of its physics and clinical applications. This review outlines the fundamental principles and technical considerat

A multi-sequence MRI integration framework using SwinUNETR-v2 for multiple sclerosis lesion segmentation.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic brain disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, where Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a key role in diagnosis. While manual analysis of brain MRIs is important, it is time-consuming and prone to human error. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven Computer Aided Diagnostic (CAD) systems have therefore gained traction due to their ability to provide more consistent and reliable assessments. This study presents a multi-sequence framework that integrates four MRI modalities with the SwinUNETR-v2 backbone for MS lesion segmentation. The main contributi

Cross-Modal Tumor Segmentation Using Generative Blending Augmentation and Self-Training.

OBJECTIVES: Data scarcity and domain shifts lead to biased training sets that do not accurately represent deployment conditions. A related practical problem is cross-modal image segmentation, where the objective is to segment unlabelled images using previously labelled datasets from other imaging modalities. METHODS: We propose a cross-modal segmentation method based on conventional image synthesis boosted by a new data augmentation technique called Generative Blending Augmentation (GBA). GBA leverages a SinGAN model to learn representative generative features from a single training image to

Hashimoto's thyroiditis recognition from multi-modal data via global cross-attention and distance-aware training.

Ultrasound images and biological indicators, which reveal Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) characteristics in thyroid tissue from different perspectives, play crucial roles in HT recognition. Ultrasound images of patients with HT typically present a heterogeneous background with potential decreases in echogenicity. Clinicians are prone to misdiagnosing HT by visually evaluating these characteristics. In addition, patients with HT may exhibit fluctuations in relevant biological indicators, but there are no absolute relationships between a single biological indicator and HT. To address these challen

Modality redundancy for MRI-based glioblastoma segmentation.

PURPOSE: Automated glioblastoma segmentation from magnetic resonance imaging is generally performed on a four-modality input, including T1, contrast T1, T2 and FLAIR. We hypothesize that information redundancy is present within these image combinations, which can possibly reduce a model's performance. Moreover, for clinical applications, the risk of encountering missing data rises as the number of required input modalities increases. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the relevance and influence of the different modalities used for MRI-based glioblastoma segmentation. METHODS: After the t

Retinal image registration method for myopia development.

OBJECTIVE: The development of myopia is usually accompanied by changes in retinal vessels, optic disc, optic cup, fovea, and other retinal structures as well as the length of the ocular axis. And the accurate registration of retinal images is very important for the extraction and analysis of retinal structural changes. However, the registration of retinal images with myopia development faces a series of challenges, due to the unique curved surface of the retina, as well as the changes in fundus curvature caused by ocular axis elongation. Therefore, our goal is to improve the registration accur

A Siamese-Transport Domain Adaptation Framework for 3D MRI Classification of Gliomas and Alzheimer's Diseases.

Accurate and fully automated brain structure examination and prediction from 3D volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a necessary step in medical imaging analysis, which can assist greatly in clinical diagnosis. Traditional deep learning models suffer from severe performance degradation when applied to clinically acquired unlabeled data. The performance degradation is mainly caused by domain discrepancy such as different device types and parameter settings for data acquisition. However, existing approaches focus on the reduction of domain discrepancies but ignore the entanglement of s

Interpreting magnetic resonance imaging findings in bipolar disorder.

The episodic nature of bipolar disorder together with the ostensibly polar extremes of mania and depression have favored the acceptance of a functional model postulating regionally disturbed brain activity returning to normal with time or treatment. Seemingly contrary to that view, anatomical imaging studies have demonstrated abnormalities in brain structure which could reflect neurodegeneration or represent disturbed neuronal development. Resolution may come from an appreciation of adult neurogenesis, especially given the neuroprotective properties of drugs, such as lithium and their effects

MR and genetics in schizophrenia: focus on auditory hallucinations.

Although many structural and functional abnormalities have been related to schizophrenia, until now, no single biological marker has been of diagnostic clinical utility. One way to obtain more valid findings is to focus on the symptoms instead of the syndrome. Auditory hallucinations (AHs) are one of the most frequent and reliable symptoms of psychosis. We present a review of our main findings, using a multidisciplinary approach, on auditory hallucinations. Firstly, by applying a new auditory emotional paradigm specific for psychosis, we found an enhanced activation of limbic and frontal brain
