Investigating the effect of rTMS over the temporoparietal cortex on the Right Ear Advantage for perceived and imagined voices.

A Right Ear Advantage (REA) is well-established in perceptual tasks but it has been found also during imagery. It is ascribed to the left temporoparietal activity for language, and it can be absent/reversed in some clinical conditions including auditory hallucinations. We applied 1-Hz repetitive TMS over TP3/TP4 (left/right language areas) identified through neuronavigation in 18 healthy participants, before administering a modified white noise (WN) speech illusion paradigm: a voice was presented at one ear, at the same or lower intensities with respect to binaural WN. In some trials the voice

Neuropsychiatric risk in children with intellectual disability of genetic origin: IMAGINE, a UK national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Children with intellectual disability frequently have multiple co-morbid neuropsychiatric conditions and poor physical health. Genomic testing is increasingly recommended as a first-line investigation for these children. We aim to determine the effect of genomics, inheritance, and socioeconomic deprivation on neuropsychiatric risk in children with intellectual disability of genetic origin as compared with the general population. METHODS: IMAGINE is a prospective cohort study using online mental health and medical assessments in a cohort of 3407 UK participants with intellectual di

EEG patterns of self-paced movement imaginations towards externally-cued and internally-selected targets.

In this study, we investigate the neurophysiological signature of the interacting processes which lead to a single reach-and-grasp movement imagination (MI). While performing this task, the human healthy participants could either define their movement targets according to an external cue, or through an internal selection process. After defining their target, they could start the MI whenever they wanted. We recorded high density electroencephalographic (EEG) activity and investigated two neural correlates: the event-related potentials (ERPs) associated with the target selection, which reflect t

Imagining the future: The core episodic simulation network dissociates as a function of timecourse and the amount of simulated information.

Neuroimaging data indicate that episodic memory (i.e., remembering specific past experiences) and episodic simulation (i.e., imagining specific future experiences) are associated with enhanced activity in a common set of neural regions, often referred to as the core network. This network comprises the hippocampus, parahippocampal cortex, lateral and medial parietal cortex, lateral temporal cortex, and medial prefrontal cortex. Evidence for a core network has been taken as support for the idea that episodic memory and episodic simulation are supported by common processes. Much remains to be lea

I can see where you would be: Patterns of fMRI activity reveal imagined landmarks.

Visual mental imagery arises when perceptual information is accessed from memory, originating the experience of "seeing with the mind's eye". Different content-dependent brain areas in the human ventral visual stream are activated during visual mental imagery, similarly to what happens during visual perception. The neural patterns within these regions, but not in the early visual cortex, are similar during imagery and perception, suggesting that, in the absence of perceptual stimulation, content-dependent brain areas are able to re-instantiate specific neural patterns allowing for mental image

Imagining the future in health anxiety: the impact of rumination on the specificity of illness-related memory and future thinking.

Individuals with health anxiety experience catastrophic fears relating to future illness. However, little research has explored cognitive processes involved in how health anxious individuals picture the future. Ruminative thinking has been shown to impede the ability to recall specific autobiographical memories, which in turn is related to maladaptive, categoric future thinking processes. This study examined the impact of rumination on memory and future thinking among 60 undergraduate participants with varying health anxiety (35% clinical-level health anxiety). Participants were randomized to

An experimental study of the role of vulnerability related perceptions in spider fear: comparing an imaginal and in vivo encounter.

The effect of manipulating perceptions of the uncontrollability, unpredictability and dangerousness of a spider was assessed using both an imaginal and in vivo task involving an encounter with a spider. Participants were randomly assigned to one of eight conditions formed by the crossing of factors. Experimental manipulations of uncontrollability, unpredictability and dangerousness all had a significant effect on Task Related Spider Fear in the in vivo exposure task. Results indicated a greater effect on task related fear for in vivo exposure (R(2)=.258) compared to imaginal exposure (R(2)=.05

Involuntary facial muscle activity during imagined vocalisation contaminates EEG and enables emotion decoding.

OBJECTIVE: Decoding imagined speech from electroencephalography (EEG) recordings is potentially useful for brain-computer interfaces. Previous studies have focused on decoding semantic information from EEG, leaving the decoding of emotion - an important component of human communication - largely unexplored. APPROACH: Here, we report two experiments involving participants tasked with overt (n = 14) or imagined (n = 21) emotional vocalisation in five different categories: anger, happiness, neutral, sadness, and pleasure. Throughout, we recorded 64-channel EEG; we computed time-frequency feature

African American English speakers' pitch variation and rate adjustments for imagined technological and human addressees.

This paper examines the adaptations African American English speakers make when imagining talking to a voice assistant, compared to a close friend/family member and to a stranger. Results show that speakers slowed their rate and produced less pitch variation in voice-assistant-"directed speech" (DS), relative to human-DS. These adjustments were not mediated by how often participants reported experiencing errors with automatic speech recognition. Overall, this paper addresses a limitation in the types of language varieties explored when examining technology-DS registers and contributes to our u

Like clockwork? (Re)imagining rhythms and routines when living with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Temporal trajectories of health, illness and disability-from biographical change to micro-embodied practices within social time-are important strands within medical sociology and disability studies. Drawing upon a UK-based qualitative study using diaries and follow-up interviews to explore everyday life with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), this article explores routines when living with the condition. It focuses specifically on accounts of routines being anticipated, slowed down and stretched out to accommodate and/or care for bodies, with personal and social rhythms weaved in, out and with ea

Imagery Rescripting and Imaginal Exposure in Nightmare Disorder Compared to Positive Imagery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Both imagery rescripting and imaginal exposure have been proven to be effective in the treatment of chronic nightmares when compared to a waitlist condition. Little is known about their comparative efficacy and their efficacy compared to an active control. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to compare the two treatments to one another and to positive imagery as an active control, and to explore covariates of the treatment effect. METHODS: In this single-blinded randomized controlled trial, 96 patients with nightmare disorder (idiopathic nightmares) from an outpatient clinic

Hedgehog produced by the Drosophila wing imaginal disc induces distinct responses in three target tissues.

Hedgehog (Hh) is an evolutionarily conserved signaling protein that has essential roles in animal development and homeostasis. We investigated Hh signaling in the region of the Drosophila wing imaginal disc that produces Hh and is near the tracheal air sac primordium (ASP) and myoblasts. Hh distributes in concentration gradients in the anterior compartment of the wing disc, ASP and myoblasts, and activates genes in each tissue. Some targets of Hh signal transduction are common to the disc, ASP and myoblasts, whereas others are tissue-specific. Signaling in the three tissues is cytoneme-mediate

Functional magnetic resonance brain imaging of imagined walking to study locomotor function after stroke.

OBJECTIVE: Imagined walking has yielded insights into normal locomotor control and could improve understanding of neurologic gait dysfunction. This study evaluated brain activation during imagined walking in chronic stroke. METHODS: Ten persons with stroke and 10 matched controls completed a walking test battery and a magnetic resonance imaging session including imagined walking and knee extension tasks. Brain activations were compared between tasks and groups. Associations between activations and composite gait score were also calculated, while controlling for lesion load. RESULTS: Stroke a

Little imaginal discs, a Trithorax group member, is a constituent of nuclear matrix of Drosophila melanogaster embryos.

Nuclear Matrix (NuMat) is the structural and functional framework of the nucleus. It has been shown that attachment of chromatin to NuMat brings significant regulation of the transcriptional activity of particular genes; however, key components of NuMat involved in this process remain elusive. We have identified Lid (Little imaginal discs) as one of the components of NuMat. It belongs to the TrxG group of proteins involved in activation of important developmental genes. However, unlike other activator proteins of TrxG, Lid is a Jumonji protein involved in H3K4me3 demethylation. Here, we report

Functional brain effects of hand disuse in patients with trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis: executed and imagined movements.

The human trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint has a crucial evolutionary importance as it permits rotation and opposition of the thumb to the other fingers. In chronic TMC joint osteoarthritis (i.e., rhizarthrosis), this motor ability, essential for pinching, grasping, and manipulating objects, may become difficult or impossible due to intolerable pain. Here, we assess whether patients with rhizarthrosis show signs of abnormal brain representation of hand movements. To this end, we studied 35 patients with rhizarthrosis, affecting predominantly one of the two hands, and 35 healthy subjects who unde

Efficacy and mechanisms of imagery rescripting and imaginal exposure for nightmares: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent nightmares can effectively be treated with cognitive-behavioral techniques such as imagery rehearsal therapy, which involves imagery rescripting (IR) of nightmares, and imaginal exposure (IE) therapy. However, the underlying mechanisms of these treatments remain largely unknown. To investigate this, we identified a number of variables that might mediate the therapeutic effect of rescripting-based and/or exposure-based therapies. Also, to control for the possible confounding influence of (other) treatment components, we designed two stripped-down treatment protocols, which
