Passive immunity of progeny from broiler breeders vaccinated with oil-emulsion bacterin against Salmonella enteritidis.

Young poultry are very susceptible to Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) infections because of the absence of complete intestinal flora colonization and an immature immune system. This study evaluated the role of passive immunity on the resistance of young birds against early infections caused by SE. The progeny of broiler breeders vaccinated with an oil-emulsion bacterin was compared to the progeny of unvaccinated birds. Efficacy was determined by challenging birds at 1 and 14 days of age with SE Nal Spc strain, phage type 4. After challenge at 1 day of age, the progeny of vaccinated birds presented

Passive immunization targeting the N-terminal projection domain of tau decreases tau pathology and improves cognition in a transgenic mouse model of Alzheimer disease and tauopathies.

Intraneuronal accumulation of abnormally hyperphosphorylated tau in the brain is a histopathological hallmark of Alzheimer's disease and a family of related neurodegenerative disorders collectively called tauopathies. At present there is no effective treatment available for these progressive neurodegenerative diseases which are clinically characterized by dementia in mid to old-age. Here we report the treatment of 14-17-months-old 3xTg-AD mice with tau antibodies 43D (tau 6-18) and 77E9 (tau 184-195) to the N-terminal projection domain of tau or mouse IgG as a control by intraperitoneal inject

Passive immunization with a polyclonal antiserum to the hemoglobin receptor of Haemophilus ducreyi confers protection against a homologous challenge in the experimental swine model of chancroid.

Haemophilus ducreyi, the etiologic agent of chancroid, has an obligate requirement for heme. Heme is acquired by H. ducreyi from its human host via TonB-dependent transporters expressed at its bacterial surface. Of 3 TonB-dependent transporters encoded in the genome of H. ducreyi, only the hemoglobin receptor, HgbA, is required to establish infection during the early stages of the experimental human model of chancroid. Active immunization with a native preparation of HgbA (nHgbA) confers complete protection in the experimental swine model of chancroid, using either Freund's or monophosphoryl l

Maternal RSV vaccination generates high-affinity antibodies that efficiently transfer to infants, providing enhanced passive immunity.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) remains the leading cause of hospitalization in young children. A bivalent pre-fusion (preF) protein RSV vaccine was licensed for pregnant persons in 2023 (Abrysvo, Pfizer), but the impact of RSV maternal immunization on maternal-fetal immunity has not been well characterized. We analyze neutralizing antibody responses, binding antibodies, and antibody affinity maturation in 58 unvaccinated and 49 vaccinated pregnant individuals and their infants. Maternal RSV vaccination induces robust neutralizing antibodies against both RSV-A2 and RSV-B1 strains, with geome

Effects of Prepartum Supplementation and Yeast Fermentation Products on the Progesterone-Modulated Transfer of Passive Immunity in Bos indicus Cows.

Inadequate colostrum intake increases risks of calf morbidity and mortality. This study investigated the effects of prepartum and early postpartum supplementation and yeast fermentation products on late-pregnant Bos indicus cows, and the role of progesterone in mediating passive immunity transfer. Thirty-six Brahman cows were allocated to three treatment groups: Control (ad libitum Rhodes grass hay), Supp (Control plus 1 kg/day supplement) and SCFP (Supp plus 14 g/day Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation products). Treatments started 30 days before the expected calving date and continued unti

Effect of offering a second colostrum feeding and delivery method on transfer of passive immunity, health, and behavior in neonatal calves.

Our objective was to describe the effect of providing a second feeding of maternal colostrum (MC) or colostrum replacement (CR), using either an esophageal tube or nipple bottle delivery method, on transfer of passive immunity, and on measures of calf health and behavior during the first 3 d of life, as compared with providing a milk replacer control. Eligible newborn dairy and dairy x beef calves on a commercial Minnesota dairy were weighed, placed in a bedded pen, then fitted with a tri-axial accelerometer. All calves were tube-fed a first feeding of pooled heat-treated MC (average IgG = 84

High-Starch Diet Prepartum Enhances IgG Concentration in Goat Colostrum Without Affecting the Transfer of Passive Immunity.

This study hypothesises that a high-starch (HS) diet during the last month of gestation enhances colostrum yield and composition as well as the dam and goat kid metabolism, immune status and performance. Thirty multiparous and pregnant Majorera dairy goats were randomly assigned to a prepartum dietary treatment (CON vs. HS) on wk -4 relative to the expected parturition. Goats were fed either a control (n = 15; 25% DM of starch) or HS (n = 15; 32% DM of starch) diet during the last month of gestation. Blood samples were collected on wk -4, -3, -2 and -1 relative to expected parturition, immedia

Short communication: Validation of methods for practically evaluating failed passive transfer of immunity in calves arriving at a veal facility.

Providing a sufficient quantity of high-quality colostrum to male and female calves soon after birth is critical to reduce the risk of disease and mortality. Practical tests have not been validated to determine failed passive transfer of immunity upon arrival at veal facilities. There are many challenges to validation, including the lack of information on the age of the calf and the high prevalence of dehydration. The objective of this study was to validate a semiquantitative IgG antibody test using whole blood and a digital refractometer using serum to determine passive transfer of immunity s

Engineered Mesenchymal Cells Improve Passive Immune Protection Against Lethal Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus Exposure.

UNLABELLED: : Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are being exploited as gene delivery vectors for various disease and injury therapies. We provide proof-of-concept that engineered MSCs can provide a useful, effective platform for protection against infectious disease. Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen affecting humans and equines and can be used in bio-warfare. No licensed vaccine or antiviral agent currently exists to combat VEEV infection in humans. Direct antibody administration (passive immunity) is an effective, but short-lived, method of providing imm

Passive immunotherapy with dromedary immune serum in an experimental animal model for Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus infection.

UNLABELLED: Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) is a highly lethal pulmonary infection. Serum from convalescent MERS patients may provide some benefit but is not readily available. In contrast, nearly all camels in the Middle East have been infected with MERS-CoV. Here, we show that sera obtained from MERS-immune camels augment the kinetics of MERS-CoV clearance and reduce the severity of pathological changes in infected lungs, with efficacy proportional to the titer of MERS-CoV-neutralizing serum antibody. IMPORTANCE: Middle East respiratory syndrome, caused by a coronavirus, is highly l

Protection in mice passively immunized with serum from cynomolgus macaques and humans vaccinated with recombinant plague vaccine (rF1V).

Passive transfer models were developed to evaluate the ability of antibodies generated in cynomolgus macaques and humans vaccinated with a recombinant plague vaccine (rF1V) to protect naïve Swiss Webster mice against pneumonic plague. Development of the passive transfer model is intended to support clinical and nonclinical development of the rF1V vaccine. To evaluate protection, unfractionated serum collected from rF1V vaccinated cynomolgus macaques and human volunteers with known antibody titers to rF1, rV and rF1V was transferred into naïve Swiss Webster mice via the intraperitoneal route. Evaluation of longitudinal passive immunity transfer against lumpy skin disease virus in calves by different serological methods.

To implement effective lumpy skin disease (LSD) control measures, such as timely vaccination, particularly in calves and serological monitoring, it is necessary to evaluate immune response after vaccination, both in adult cattle and in their calves. The aim of this study was to evaluate passive immunity transfer and duration of maternal antibodies against lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) in calves born to vaccinated cows by two different serological methods. The longitudinal study was carried out on two farms in Serbia where no cases were reported during LSD outbreak in 2016. Fifteen cows on ea

Climatic and calf-related risk factors associated with failure of transfer of passive immunity in Holstein calves in a hot environment.

This retrospective observational study aimed to assess the effect of temperature-humidity index (THI) at calving and in the last trimester of pregnancy and calve-related factors affecting passive transfer of maternal immunoglobulin using Brix refractometry in Holstein calves. Blood samples from 4411 Holstein calves from a single large dairy farm in spring 2022 were used. A subset of data containing 6318 calvings was used to determine the effect of climatic conditions on the occurrence of agammaglobulinemia. Risk factors predictive of failure of passive transfer (FPT) were calculated using mult

Successful transfer of passive immunity: the natural alternative to antibiotics for boosting the survival of intensively reared dairy goat kids.

In dairy operations, antibiotics have traditionally been used to treat, prevent, and control diseases. However, given the mounting global crisis of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), farmers are urged to re-assess and reduce their reliance on antibiotics. Thus, this randomized, double-blinded cohort study aimed to estimate the prevalence of failed and successful transfer of passive immunity (FTPI and STPI) in dairy goat kids reared under commercial conditions, and the effects of antibiotic metaphylaxis on the pre-weaning (≤42 d old) mortality in FTPI and STPI kids.
