Impulsivity, Sensation Seeking, and Risk-Taking Behaviors among HIV-Positive and HIV-Negative Heroin Dependent Persons.

Objective. The aim of this study was to compare impulsivity and risky decision making among HIV-positive and negative heroin dependent persons. Methods. We compared different dimensions of impulsivity and risky decision making in two groups of 60 HIV-positive and 60 HIV-negative male heroin dependent persons. Each group was comprised of equal numbers of current (treatment seeker) and former (abstinent) heroin addicts. Data collection tools included Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS), and Zuckerman Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS). Result

Dissociation between long-lasting behavioral sensitization to amphetamine and impulsive choice in rats performing a delay-discounting task.

RATIONALE: Repeated amphetamine (AMPH) exposure is known to cause long-term changes in AMPH-induced locomotor behavior (i.e., sensitization) that are associated with similarly long-lasting changes in brain function. It is not clear, however, if such exposure produces long-lasting changes in a cognitive behavior that, in humans, is hypothesized to contribute to addiction. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether repeated AMPH exposure induces both locomotor sensitization and alters impulsive choice in a delay-discounting task. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult, male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 29) were pretrea

The relations of problem behavior status to children's negative emotionality, effortful control, and impulsivity: concurrent relations and prediction of change.

The relations of children's internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors to their concurrent regulation, impulsivity (reactive undercontrol), anger, sadness, and fearfulness and these aspects of functioning 2 years prior were examined. Parents and teachers completed measures of children's (N = 185; ages 6 through 9 years) adjustment, negative emotionality, regulation, and behavior control; behavioral measures of regulation also were obtained. In general, both internalizing and externalizing problems were associated with negative emotionality. Externalizers were low in effortful regulation

Impulsivity as a dynamic mechanism linking young adult sleep and drinking behavior during naturally occurring drinking episodes.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is implicated in theories linking sleep and drinking behavior. While well-studied across individuals, research regarding sleep, impulsivity, and drinking in real-world contexts is lacking. This study tested a theoretical pathway wherein better-than-average sleep predicts decreased impulsivity while drinking, which then predicts lesser drinking and negative alcohol consequences experienced during drinking episodes. METHOD: Young adults (N = 131) completed 21 days of ecological momentary assessment, including morning reports, self-initiated drink reports after first drin

Gambling refusal self-efficacy and protective behavioral strategies mediate and moderate the relationships between impulsivity and gambling outcomes.

Studies suggest that refusal self-efficacy and protective behavioral strategies may influence how impulsivity relates to addictive behaviors. However, their mediating and moderating roles have not yet been examined in the context of gambling. This study investigated whether gambling refusal self-efficacy (GRSE) and gambling protective behavioral strategies (GPBS) mediate or moderate the associations between impulsivity and gambling outcomes, including problem gambling (PG) and gambling involvement. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 926 gamblers from the general population (fe

Emotion Dysregulation, Impulsivity, and Implicit Cognition in Adolescent with Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors: A Six-Month Prospective Study.

Background/Objectives: Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescents. Emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, and childhood trauma are key factors underlying Self-Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors (SITB), yet reliable short-term predictors are limited, especially in at-risk clinical populations. This study prospectively examined the association between SITB and clinical (psychological pain, impulsivity, childhood trauma) and cognitive measures (Implicit Association Tests, IATs). Methods: A prospective, observational study was conducted in adolescents (12-17) admitted to a university hospita

Association between adult ADHD, self-report, and behavioral measures of impulsivity and treatment outcome in cocaine use disorder.

A large and growing body of literature supports the association between cocaine addiction and impulsivity. The aim of the study was to test whether pretreatment screening for adult ADHD, and self-report and behavioral measures of impulsivity have prognostic utility in clinical practice with cocaine users. We enrolled a cohort of N = 86 treatment-seeking cocaine users, assisted by a public addiction service, in a 24 week study. At baseline, we performed screening for adult ADHD, assessed the presence of co-occurring mental disorders, and applied measures of drug use severity, trait-like impulsi

Gender Differences in Impulse Control Disorders and Related Behaviors in Patients with Parkinson's Disease and its Impact on Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND: Dopaminergic medications administered to remedy motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease are associated with an enhanced risk for impulse control disorders (ICD) and related compulsive behaviors (ICD-RB). Thus, the present study focuses on investigating the gender difference in the prevalence of ICD-RBs in Indian PD patients on dopamine replacement therapy (DRT), its impact on quality of life and to identify ICDs relevant in Indian scenario apart from the criteria set in QUIP-RS. METHOD: This was a hospital-based observational cross-sectional study in which Parkinson's disease patien

The high prevalence of impulse control behaviors in patients with early-onset Parkinson's disease: A cross-sectional multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: In Parkinson's disease patients, impulse control disorders (ICDs) have been associated with younger age and early disease onset, yet the prevalence of ICDs in early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) patients has yet to be studied. Thus, we set out to compare the prevalence of impulse control behaviors (ICBs) in a cohort of EOPD patients with that in age and gender matched healthy controls (HCs), as well as to analyze the association of these symptoms with the use of dopaminergic drugs and other clinical or demographic factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional, multicenter study was car

Effects of ethanol exposure during early pregnancy in hyperactive, inattentive and impulsive behaviors and MeCP2 expression in rodent offspring.

Prenatal exposure to alcohol has consistently been associated with adverse effects on neurodevelopment, which is collectively called fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Increasing evidence suggest that prenatal exposure to alcohol increases the risk of developing attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder-like behavior in human. In this study, we investigated the behavioral effects of prenatal exposure to EtOH in offspring mice and rats focusing on hyperactivity and impulsivity. We also examined changes in dopamine transporter and MeCP2 expression, which may underlie as a key neurobiological

Methamphetamine use, impulsivity, and sexual risk behavior among HIV-positive men who have sex with men.

This study examined impulsivity as a moderator of the relationship between meth use and sexual risk behavior in a sample of HIV-positive meth-using Men who have Sex with Men (MSM). Higher impulsivity was associated with less education, lower income, being unemployed, psychiatric diagnosis, and higher Beck depression scores. Intensity of meth use and sexual risk behavior were significantly correlated. In a multiple regression analysis, more education, greater intensity of meth use and higher levels of impulsivity predicted more unprotected sex. To test for moderating effects of impulsivity, an

Evaluating the factor structure and measurement invariance of the 20-item short version of the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale across multiple countries, languages, and gender identities.

The UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Model and the various psychometric instruments developed and validated based on this model are well established in clinical and research settings. However, evidence regarding the psychometric validity, reliability, and equivalence across multiple countries of residence, languages, or gender identities, including gender-diverse individuals, is lacking to date. Using data from the International Sex Survey (N = 82,243), confirmatory factor analyses and measurement invariance analyses were performed on the preestablished five-factor structure of the 20-item short vers

The Role of Alcohol-Related Protective Behavioral Strategies in the Relationship Among Facets of Trait Impulsivity, Alcohol Use Severity, and Risky Sexual Behavior Among College Students.

Impulsivity and alcohol consumption are linked to increased risky sexual behaviors, but the role of protective behavioral strategies (PBS) in this relationship is underexplored. This study examined whether PBS moderates the relationship among trait impulsivity, alcohol use (AU) severity, and risky sexual behavior (RSB). A moderated mediation analysis was conducted using cross-sectional data from a study on a text-based intervention among college students (n = 524; Mage = 20.93, SD = 3.51; Female = 70.1%). Results showed that greater positive urgency and lack of perseverance were significantly

The paradox of high IQ in ADHD: dissociable effects on inattention and impulsivity - insights from behavior, cognition & brain in 5138 children.

While Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is widely considered a linear protective factor against attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), this paradigm fails to capture domain-specific nuances. We investigated whether non-linear relationships between IQ profiles and ADHD symptoms exist in a large cohort of children diagnosed with ADHD using a multidimensional dataset that integrates behavioral assessments, cognitive testing, and neuroimaging data. We examined a cohort of 5138 children aged 6-16 years diagnosed with ADHD, spanning a broad IQ range, and employed Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) mod

Impulsive aggression and response inhibition in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and disruptive behavioral disorders: Findings from a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Although impulsive aggression (IA) and dysfunctional response inhibition (RI) are hallmarks of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and disrupted behavioral disorders (DBDs), little is known about their shared and distinct deviant neural mechanisms. AIMS AND METHODS: Here, we selectively reviewed s/fMRI ADHD and DBD studies to identify disorder-specific and shared IA and RI aberrant neural mechanisms. RESULTS: In ADHD, deviant prefrontal and cingulate functional activity was associated with increased IA. Structural alterations were most pronounced in the cingulate cort

Personality risk for antisocial behavior: Testing the intersections between callous-unemotional traits, sensation seeking, and impulse control in adolescence.

The current project seeks to integrate literatures on personality risk for antisocial behavior (ASB) by examining how callous-unemotional traits relate to (a) the development of disinhibited traits and (b) the association between disinhibited traits and ASB. In Study 1, using a nationally representative sample of youth (N > 7,000), we examined whether conduct problems and lack of guilt assessed during ages 4-10 years predicted levels of and changes in disinhibited traits over the course of adolescence, and moderated associations between these traits and ASB. High levels of childhood conduct pr
