BACKGROUND: Although hydrostatic reduction of intussusception with ultrasound (US) or fluoroscopy guidance is well known, it is not yet well established in many low-income and middle-income countries. The aim of the study is to report our results of hydrostatic reduction with intermittent radiography, which has the potential to be practiced in resource-limited settings.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed our patients with intussusception from 2009 to 2019 (11 years). Hydrostatic reduction was performed using water-soluble contrast medium (iopamidol), and reduction was followed with intermit

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of under-5 mortality globally. The greatest burden is faced by those in low/middle-income countries (LMICs), where over 95% of deaths occur. Many of these deaths may be preventable through antenatal diagnosis and early intervention. This systematic literature review investigates the use of antenatal ultrasound to diagnose congenital anomalies and improve the health outcomes of infants in LMICs.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted using three search strings: (1) structural congenital anomalies; (2) LMICs; and (3) an

IMPORTANCE: Income losses following a hospital diagnosis can dampen career trajectories, slow social mobility, and worsen health states. Few cost-of-illness studies examine individual income loss across diseases, life stages, and socioeconomic characteristics.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate long-term personal income losses following hospital diagnosis for selected mental and physical disorders.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This observational population-based matched cohort study used prospectively collected Danish register data. All nonretired Danish residents aged 18 to 65 years from 2000 to

INTRODUCTION: Socioeconomic factors such as employment status and household income may influence clinical outcomes in Parkinson's disease, yet their associations with both motor and non-motor symptoms are not well characterized. This study examined whether employment status and income are associated with cognitive complaints, depressive symptoms, health-related quality of life, and motor severity among individuals with Parkinson's disease.
METHODS: Data were obtained from FoxInsight, and online longitudinal cohort study. Participants aged 40 years and older with Parkinson's disease who comple

This paper examines the effect of educational assortative mating on overall income mobility in terms of both inter- and intragenerational mobility. In recent years, educational assortative mating has become a trend in China, and this marital sorting pattern not only contributes to marriage stability but is also related to increased income mobility. Educational assortative mating affects the distribution of educational resources among families with diffferent educational qualifications. Families with higher educational qualifications have more educational resources, thus obtaining a more solid

IMPORTANCE: Firearm suicides are an increasing public health crisis and disproportionately impact low-income communities. The earned income tax credit (EITC) is the largest poverty alleviation program for working families with low income in the US.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of presence and generosity of state EITC policies with state-level firearm suicide rates.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This ecological cohort study analyzed EITC data and suicide rates from 46 US states and Washington, DC, from 1981 to 2019. Data analysis was conducted from June 2022 to August 2024.

The Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion improved health care access for low-income Americans; however, its impact on economic outcomes-particularly income-is less clear. We used US Census administrative income data that tracked 6120 cohorts covering 84% of working-age adults from 2005 to 2019. Using difference-in-differences, we compared changes in income among low-income adults living in expansion states, before and after expansion, with changes in income in low-income adults living in non-expansion states. Low-income adults living in Medicaid-expansion states experienced an average 9.5%

IMPORTANCE: Socioeconomic disparities are increasingly recognized as key factors in health outcomes among patients with type 2 diabetes. Understanding how income level and its changes are associated with severe hypoglycemia risk may inform targeted interventions and policy decisions.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between income level, including changes in income status, and the risk of severe hypoglycemia, and to assess whether this association varies across key subgroups in middle-aged adults.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study included adults aged 4

Household income (HI), a significant socioeconomic factor influencing mental health, has seen its association with various mental disorders garnering increasing attention. However, the common genetic basis between HI and psychiatric disorders remains poorly understood. Utilizing genome-wide association study (GWAS) pooled statistics for HI, schizophrenia (SCZ), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder (BIP), and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), bivariate mixed models of causality (MiXeR) were employed to quantify the shared genetic architecture between HI and psychiatr

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the epidemiology, aetiology, diagnostics and management of childhood pneumonia in low and middle income countries (LMICs).
DESIGN: Review of published english literature from 2019 to February 2024.
RESULTS: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) still result in significant mortality in children under 5 years of age in LMICs. Important studies have reported a change in the pathogenesis of LRTIs over the last 5 years with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) resulting in a large burden of disease. SARS-CoV-2 had a significant direct and indirect impact in children i

Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is one of the most common causes of pediatric bowel obstruction in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This paper describes the unique aspects of presentation, diagnosis, management and post-operative care and outcomes of HD in LMICs. In LMICs, patients with HD are much more likely to present in a delayed fashion with subsequent increased morbidity and mortality including higher rates of chronic obstruction, malnutrition with failure to thrive, complete obstruction and perforation. There are multifactorial causes for delay, with opportunities to improve initia

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) availability, programme characteristics and barriers are not well-known in low/middle-income countries (LMICs). In this study, they were compared with high-income countries (HICs) and by CR funding source.
METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was administered to CR programmes globally. Need for CR was computed using incident ischaemic heart disease (IHD) estimates from the Global Burden of Disease study. General linear mixed models were performed.
RESULTS: CR was identified in 55/138 (39.9%) LMICs; 47/55 (85.5% country response rate) countries parti

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Current assessments of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) may not adequately encompass the breadth of adversity to which low-income urban children are exposed. The purpose of this study was to identify and characterize the range of adverse childhood experiences faced by young adults who grew up in a low-income urban area.
METHODS: Focus groups were conducted with young adults who grew up in low-income Philadelphia neighborhoods. Using the nominal group technique, participants generated a list of adverse childhood experiences and then identified the 5 most stressful

Vesicovaginal fistula secondary to obstructed labor continues to be an all-too-common occurrence in underdeveloped nations throughout Africa and Asia. Vesicovaginal fistula remains largely an overlooked problem in developing nations as it affects the most marginalized members of society: young, poor, illiterate women who live in remote areas. The formation of obstetric fistula is a result of complex interactions of social, biologic, and economic influences. The key underlying causes of fistula are the combination of a lack of functional emergency obstetric care, poverty, illiteracy, and low st

Mental disorders in low- and middle-income countries (LAMIC) do not attract global health policy attention. This article is based on a selective review of research on mental disorders in adults in LAMIC since 2001 and recent analyses of disease burden in developing countries. Mental disorders account for 11.1% of the total burden of disease in LAMIC. Unipolar depressive disorder is the single leading neuropsychiatric cause of disease burden. Alcohol use disorders account for nearly 4% of the attributable disease burden in LAMIC. Mental disorders are closely associated with other public health

Breastfeeding rates remain low, especially among low-income minority women. The objective of this qualitative study was to assess barriers to breastfeeding and reasons for combination feeding among low-income Latina women and their families. Meetings were held with key informants to inform the sampling plan and develop questions for focus groups. Data were collected from eight qualitative focus groups with primiparous mothers postpartum, mothers breastfeeding at 4 to 6 months, mothers formula feeding at 4 to 6 months, grandmothers and fathers, and 29 individual interviews with formula- and com
