Long-term functional urinary outcomes comparing single- vs double-layer urethrovesical anastomosis: two-year follow-up of a two-group parallel randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate long-term urinary outcomes in participants of a two-group randomized clinical trial comparing continence after robotic prostatectomy (RP) between those who had reconstruction of the rhabdosphincter and puboprostatic collar (double-layer anastomosis) with those who had not. METHODS: Consecutive patients (n = 116) undergoing RP at a single institution were randomized to either single- or double-layer urethrovesical (UV) anastomosis between August and December of 2007. Patients were contacted an average of 23.5 months postoperatively. A survey was performed by a third-par

Is Surgical Treatment for Obesity Able to Cure Urinary Incontinence in Women?-A Prospective Single-Center Study.

There is enough evidence to support weight loss in order to improve urinary incontinence. Nevertheless, weight loss and maintaining a lower weight are not easy to achieve in the general population. Our study aims to evaluate whether bariatric surgery has a positive effect on the symptoms of urinary incontinence in female patients. We performed a prospective study on obese female patients before and after bariatric surgery, over a period of 9 years. Patients with a BMI ≥ 33 kg/m2 were included if they described involuntary loss of urine and no previous surgery for urinary incontinence was perfo

Transcorporal artificial urinary sphincter cuff placement in cases requiring revision for erosion and urethral atrophy.

PURPOSE: A distal cuff location is often required in patients undergoing artificial urinary sphincter reimplantation after previous erosion or in those requiring revision because of urethral atrophy at the original cuff site. Dissecting the urethra at a more distal site increases the risk of urethral injury and erosion, and often the urethral circumference is so small that a 4 cm. cuff is too large. We present a novel technique for distal cuff placement using transcorporal dissection that leaves corporal tunica albuginea on the dorsal surface of the urethra, allowing for its safer mobilization

[Pro-ACT™ device implantation efficiency in second line treatment of post-radical prostatectomy urinary incontinence after sub-urethral male sling failure].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The periurethral adjustable balloons (PUAB) Pro-ACT™ are less invasive technique to treat non-severe forms of post-radical prostatectomy urinary incontinence (pRP-UI), like sub-urethral trans-obturator male sling. Few data of efficiency are available for their use in second line treatment after male sling failure. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficiency of PUAB Pro-ACT™ (Uromedica, Inc., MN, USA) in the second line treatment for non-severe pRP-UI after male sling failure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Single center retrospective study of patients treated with male sling (

Prediction of Postradical Prostatectomy Urinary Incontinence Through the Combination of the Urethral Pressure Profile With Electromyography of the Urethral Sphincter.

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that the urethral pressure profile, in combination with electromyography of the urethral sphincter, may be useful as a predictor of urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy (RP). The aim of this study was to assess whether the combination of these tests resulted in an improved tool for the prediction of post-RP urinary incontinence. METHODS: Patients with indications for RP were included. The urethral pressure profile, including prostatic and sphincter components for maximum urethral closure pressure (MUCP) and functional urethral length, was recorded

Effectiveness of electrical stimulation for treating male urinary incontinence after prostatectomy: a meta-analysis and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Prostatectomy frequently leads to postoperative urinary incontinence (UI), significantly impairing patients' quality of life. While pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFMEs) are commonly employed, the efficacy of electrical stimulation (ES) as a non-invasive adjunct remains debated. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effectiveness of ES combined with PFME versus PFME alone for post-radical prostatectomy UI. METHOD: A comprehensive search across PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and ResearchGate identified 10 randomized controlled trials meeting inclusion c

A narrative review of the role of the Male Stress Incontinence Grading Scale in the surgical management of male stress urinary incontinence.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Surgical treatment for male stress urinary incontinence (SUI) includes transobturator slings and artificial urinary sphincters (AUSs). Historically, 24-hour pad weights have been used to objectively grade the severity of male SUI and guide management decisions. In 2016, the Male Stress Incontinence Grading Scale (MSIGS) was developed as a scoring system for the standing cough test (SCT). This test can be performed at the time of initial consultation and is non-invasive, with significantly less burden to the patient compared to historical measures of male SUI. METHODS
