Sexuality research in India: An update.

This review provides the available evidence on sexual dysfunctions in India. Most of the studies have concentrated on male sexual dysfunction and hardly a few have voiced the sexual problems in females. Erectile dysfunction (ED), premature ejaculation (PME) and combinations of ED and PME appear to be main dysfunctions reported in males. Dhat syndrome remains an important diagnosis reported in studies from North India. There is a paucity of literature on management issues with an emergent need to conduct systematic studies in this neglected area so that the concerns of these patients can be pro

Incidence of childhood dermatosis in India.

The incidence ofdermatologic conditions in the pediatric age group presents a pattern that often differs from that in adults; this is important for epidemiologic studies and population-based analysis. This clinical study was carried out in children up to age 14 in the western part of India. Dermatologic conditions were tabulated based on the etiology, incidence, age, and sex distribution, as well as seasonal variations, and the results were analyzed. There were a total of 390 boys and 310 girls. The majority of skin conditions in newborns are transient. The most common dermatoses found were of

The epidemiology of meningococcal disease in India.

OBJECTIVE: To undertake a review of the literature on the epidemiology of meningococcal disease in India, with a view to informing future control policies. METHODS: We searched the PUBMED, EMBASE, Global Health, IMSEAR and MedIND databases for observational studies relating to the burden of endemic meningococcal disease in India, the occurrence and epidemiological characteristics of epidemics, and the prevalence of individual meningococcal serogroups. RESULTS: The relatively few reports identified suggest that the incidence of endemic meningococcal disease in India is low, but that occasiona

Spectrum of hemoglobinopathies in Orissa, India.

Five hundred and 20 cases (279 males; 241 females), referred for anemia, with a wide age range, from different parts of the state of Orissa, India, were investigated to evaluate the extent of the prevalence of hemoglobinopathies (sickle cell disorders and thalassemias) by analyzing the associated hemoglobin (Hb) profiles, Hb genotypes, as well as the clinical and hematological parameters. We found sickle cell trait (Hb AS) in 131 cases (62 males; 69 females), homozygous sickle cell anemia in 49 cases (34 males; 15 females) and Hb S-beta thalassemia (S-beta-thal) in 17 cases (nine males; eight

Japanese encephalitis in India: an overview.

Japanese encephalitis (JE)-epidemics have been reported in many parts of the country. The incidence has been reported to be high among pediatric group with high mortality. The incidence of JE in recent times is showing an increasing trend. It appears that JE may become one of the major public health problems in India, considering the quantum of the vulnerable pediatric population, the proportion of JEV infections among the encephalitic children and wide scattering of JE-prone areas. JE burden can be estimated satisfactorily to some extend by strengthening diagnostic facilities for JE confirmat

Glomerular diseases in the elderly in India.

Three hundred fifteen (315) elderly (> or = 60 years) patients with clinical renal diseases were evaluated for the evidence of glomerular diseases between November 1998 to June 2002. Glomerular diseases (GN) were observed in 20.6% (65/315) of the elderly patients. The age of the patients (male 56; female 9) ranged between 60-90 (mean 64.17 +/- 3.83) years. The clinical presentation of GN included: nephrotic syndrome 40 (61.5%), acute nephritic syndrome 19 (29.2%), rapidly progressive GN 4 (6.15%) and asymptomatic urinary abnormality 2 (3.0%). Overall, primary and secondary glomerular disease w

Leptospirosis in India and the rest of the world.

Leptospirosis is an acute anthropo-zoonotic infection of worldwide significance caused by spirochaete Leptospira interrogans which has 23 serogroups and >200 serovars. Various factors influencing the animal activity, suitability of the environment for the survival of the organism and behavorial and occupational habits of human beings can be the determinants of incidence and prevalence of the disease. The disease was considered inconsequential till recently, but it is emerging as an important public health problem during the last decade or so due to sudden upsurge in the number of reported case

Ahaptoglobinemia (HpO) and malaria in India.

Haptoglobin (Hp) polymorphism analysed among P. vivax and P. falciparum patients and malaria negative subjects from areas with different epidemiological situations had shown high incidence of ahaptoglobinemia (HpO) among malaria patients. A definite association of HpO with P. vivax as well as P. falciparum malaria in Indian subjects had been observed. However, low sensitivity and reliability of HpO index indicates that it can not be a good indicator for determination of malaria endemicity. About 75 per cent of HpO subjects with P. vivax infection when treated with chloroquine showed typable Hp

Priorities in tuberculosis research in India.

India accounts for nearly 30% of all tuberculosis cases in the world today and more adults in India die from TB than from any other infectious disease. The problems of HIV and multidrug resistance will make tuberculosis epidemic in India much worse unless urgent action is taken. DOTS is being applied on individual basis in the country. Maintaining the momentum in order to achieve national coverage in a phased manner, while maintaining the quality of services will require constructive commitment from all sectors, both within and outside government. This much be accompanied by additional researc

Mapping of lymphatic filariasis in India.

The derivation of detailed epidemiological maps, at the relevant spatial resolution, is being increasingly recognized as vital to the effective design and implementation of successful programmes for the control of parasites and their vectors. Geographical information systems (GIS) and a recently complied database on the distribution of lymphatic filariasis in India have now been used to develop the first maps at district-level (i.e. the level at which control against this parasite will be enacted in India) of filariasis endemicity in this country. The derived maps indicate both the substantial

Is Crohn's disease rare in India?

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) is believed to be rare in India. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the data pertaining to patients with CD seen in a tertiary referral center. METHODS: Data on patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease attending our Unit over a 5-year period were analyzed. The diagnosis of CD was established by the presence of characteristic segmental bowel involvement, consistent histological picture, exclusion of infectious causes, relapsing nature of the disease, response to appropriate drug therapy, and lack of evidence for another etiological factor. RESULTS: Of the 25 patie

Current scenario of malaria in India.

The Indian National Malaria Eradication Programme (NMEP) is reporting 2.5 to 3 million malaria cases, and about 1,000 malaria deaths annually. Malaria in the northeastern states is stable and in the peninsular India unstable. There are six major and three minor malaria vectors, of which Anopheles culicifacies transmits malaria in rural areas and An. stephensi in the towns. Other vectors are of local importance. Plasmodium vivax is the dominant infection and accounts for 60-65% cases whereas P. falciparum contributes 30-35% cases. Field operations to control malaria are impeded by resistance an

Considerations of HAV vaccine in India.

Currently available evidence indicates that most parts of India still quality to be hyper-endemic regions and hence recommendations for vaccinations developed for low endemicity regions are not applicable. There are however, some pockets which showed evidence of distinct epidemiologic shift. There is need to identify geographic regions like Kerala which have potential for epidemic outbreaks through cyclic sero-epidemiological surveys. With economic development and consequent improvements in the levels of sanitation and quality of water supplies, more such areas will be identified. Efforts to i

A study of mycetoma in eastern India.

Forty consecutive cases of mycetoma were studied with respect to clinico-epidemiological, histopathological and radiological features. The age of the patients ranged from 17 to 57 years mean being 32.4 +/- 8.68. The disease was equally distributed amongst the sexes. Most of the patients had a rural background and the disease occurred mainly among farmers and housewives. Actinomycetes (32 cases. 80%) were found to be the main pathogenic organism and Eumycetes in 4 cases (20%) only. Clinical features were more or less the same irrespective of the aetiologic agent, consisting of local swelling wi

Disorders of thyroid gland in India.

The profile of thyroid disorders encountered in pediatric and adolescent age groups in India is similar to that seen in most parts of the world except for the prevalence of iodine deficiency disorders in certain endemic regions of this country. Clinical presentation is most commonly for hypothyroidism and goiters and infrequently for hyperthyroidism. Of nearly 800 children referred for thyroid problems, 79% had hypothyroidism (goitrous as well as nongoitrous), 19% had euthyroid goiters and 2% had hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism was due to thyroid dysgenesis in 75% (aplasia/hypoplasia--50% and
