Adaptive Behavioral, Social-Emotional, and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes at 2 Years of Age in Hungarian Preterm Infants Based on Bayley III.

AIM: This study aimed to assess cognitive, language, and motor development as well as social-emotional and adaptive behavior skills of low birthweight (LBW) children. METHODS: Our cohort contained 305 two-year-old LBW children. Developmental functioning was assessed by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, 3rd Edition. RESULTS: Performance in language, particularly in expressive communication was the poorest. Extremely low birthweight (ELBW) children were found to be at increased risk of developmental delay: 12.73 times in motor (95%CI = 2.8-57.5), 9.81 times in cognitive (95%

Effect of prenatal forced-swim stress and morphine co-administration on pentylentetrazol-induced epileptic behaviors in infant and prepubertal rats.

Prenatal exposure to stress and morphine has complicated effects on epileptic seizure. Many reports have shown an interaction between morphine- and stress-induced behavioral changes in adult rats. In the present study, effect of prenatal forced-swim stress and morphine co-administration on pentylentetrazole (PTZ)-induced epileptic behaviors was investigated in rat offspring to address effect of the interaction between morphine and stress. Pregnant rats were divided to four groups of control-saline, control-morphine, stressed-saline and stressed-morphine. In the stressed group, the rats were pl

Does cerebellar injury in premature infants contribute to the high prevalence of long-term cognitive, learning, and behavioral disability in survivors?

OBJECTIVE: Although cerebellar hemorrhagic injury is increasingly diagnosed in infants who survive premature birth, its long-term neurodevelopmental impact is poorly defined. We sought to delineate the potential role of cerebellar hemorrhagic injury in the long-term disabilities of survivors of prematurity. DESIGN: We compared neurodevelopmental outcome in 3 groups of premature infants (N = 86; 35 isolated cerebellar hemorrhagic injury, 35 age-matched controls, 16 cerebellar hemorrhagic injury plus supratentorial parenchymal injury). Subjects underwent formal neurologic examinations and a bat

Effect of preterm infant behavioral assessment education on maternal stress and attachment: comparison of booklet-based and face-to-face education.

BACKGROUND: Mothers of preterm infants hospitalized in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) often experience high stress levels and challenges in developing early mother-infant attachment. Educational interventions based on the Assessment of Preterm Infants' Behavior (APIB) may improve mothers' understanding of infant behavioral cues and support maternal psychological adaptation in NICU settings. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of booklet-based and face-to-face APIB-based education on stress and attachment among mothers of preterm infants. METHODS: The present quasi-experimental stud

Caregivers' experience of dental care for infants and young children: a qualitative study based on an information-motivation-behavioral skills model.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is the most common chronic childhood disease. The prevalence of dental caries among 3-year-old infants and young children in China was as high as 50.8%. Caregivers played a crucial role in the dental care of infants and young children, as they could prevent dental problems in infants by adopting appropriate family dental care behavior. This study employed the Information-Motivation-Behavioral skills (IMB) model to explore the experiences of caregivers of Chinese infants and young children during the dental care process, which may inform and enhance future dental care

Does Infant Temperament Moderate the Relationship between Very Low Birth Weight and Behavioral Problems Over Six years?

Preterm birth and very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500 g) are associated with a greater risk for later child psychopathology. However, longitudinal studies on influencing factors and developmental precursors for behavioral problems in VLBW children are still scarce. This study investigates whether difficult infant temperament moderates the association between VLBW and internalizing symptoms, while controlling for family contextual factors. Data from N = 146 families (n = 75 VLBW and n = 71 term birth) were derived from the longitudinal HaFEn cohort study in Hamburg, Germany. Mothers reported on

Impact of an Antenatal Family-based Behavioral Treatment with a Nutrition and Exercise Lifestyle Intervention Program on Infant Weight-for-length at Birth.

BACKGROUND: World Health Organization (WHO) growth standards, including weight-for-length, are used to monitor infant size. Excessive infant weight-for-length at or above the 85th percentile is a risk for childhood overweight. Although antenatal interventions like the nutrition and exercise lifestyle intervention program (NELIP) have successfully prevented excessive gestational weight gain, strategies to improve the intervention remain of interest. This study investigated the impact of adding a family-based behavioral treatment (FBBT) to NELIP on infant weight-for-length at birth based on WHO

Disinhibited attachment behavior among infants reared at home: Relations to maternal severe mental illness and personality disorder symptoms.

Disinhibited attachment behavior (DAB) among infants is persistent and associated with behavioral and relational problems throughout childhood and adolescence. Little is known about risk factors for DAB among infants reared at home, although studies have linked DAB with maternal psychiatric hospitalization and maternal borderline personality disorder. The aim of the current study was to further assess the association between DAB, maternal severe mental illness (SMI; schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression), and maternal PD symptoms. Ninety-three mothers and their infants participated i

Gestational paracetamol exposure induces core behaviors of neurodevelopmental disorders in infant rats and modifies response to a cannabinoid agonist in females.

Paracetamol (PAR) is an over-the-counter analgesic/antipyretic used during pregnancy worldwide. Epidemiological studies have been associating gestational PAR exposure with neurobehavioral alterations in the progeny resembling autism spectrum disorders and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms. The endocannabinoid (eCB) dysfunction was previously hypothesized as one of the modes of action by which PAR may harm the developing nervous system. We aimed to evaluate possible effects of gestational exposure to PAR on male and female rat's offspring behavior and if an acute injection of WI

Familial risk of autism alters subcortical and cerebellar brain anatomy in infants and predicts the emergence of repetitive behaviors in early childhood.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition, and infant siblings of children with ASD are at a higher risk of developing autistic traits or an ASD diagnosis, when compared to those with typically developing siblings. Reports of differences in brain anatomy and function in high-risk infants which predict later autistic behaviors are emerging, but although cerebellar and subcortical brain regions have been frequently implicated in ASD, no high-risk study has examined these regions. Therefore, in this study, we compared regional MRI volumes across the whole brain in 4-

Responding to Other People's Direct Gaze: Alterations in Gaze Behavior in Infants at Risk for Autism Occur on Very Short Timescales.

Atypical gaze processing has been reported in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Here we explored how infants at risk for ASD respond behaviorally to others' direct gaze. We assessed 10-month-olds with a sibling with ASD (high risk group; n = 61) and a control group (n = 18) during interaction with an adult. Eye-tracking revealed less looking at the adult in the high risk group during 300-1000 ms after the adult initiated direct gaze: a short alteration that is likely to go unnoticed by the naked eye. Data aggregated over longer segments (the traditional eye-tracking approach) show

Behavioral outcomes of school-aged full-term small-for-gestational-age infants: A nationwide Japanese population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Small for gestational age (SGA) birth is linked with neurological deficits among children at pre-school age, but the evidence is still limited on whether such deficits are still observable at school age. We investigated the association between SGA birth and behavioral development at school age among full-term infants. METHODS: We analyzed data from a large, Japanese, nationwide, population-based longitudinal survey that started in 2001. We restricted the study participants to children born at 37-41weeks of gestation with information on birth weight and behavioral outcomes at 8year

Differences between late preterm and full-term infants: comparing effects of a short bout of practice on early reaching behavior.

This study compared the effects of a short bout of practice on reaching behavior between late preterm and full-term infants at the onset of goal-directed reaching. Twelve late preterm infants and twelve full-term infants received reaching practice based on a serial schedule. Late preterm and full-term infants were assessed in 3.3±1.4 and 2.6±1.0 days after the onset of goal-directed reaching in two measures in a single day: immediately before practice (pre-test) and immediately after practice (post-test). During the assessments, the infants were placed in a baby chair and a rubber toy was pres

Behaviors associated with onset of gastroesophageal reflux episodes in infants. Prospective study using split-screen video and pH probe.

To identify behaviors associated with the onset of gastroesophageal reflux episodes in infants both systematically and prospectively, each of 10 patients (aged 2 to 32 weeks) was studied during 2 hours of intraluminal esophageal pH probe monitoring, using a split-screen audiovisual recording technique. Videotape analysis of eight infants who had scoreable reflux events revealed six discrete behaviors closely associated temporally (P < .001 to < .05) with the onset of reflux events: "discomfort" (crying or frowning), "emission" (of liquid or gas, i.e., regurgitation, drooling, or burping), yawn

Identifying behavior mediators influencing caregivers of infants participating in an mhealth intervention: qualitative evaluation of the Baby-Feed trial through interviews.

BACKGROUND: There are only a few online infant nutrition interventions based on a behavior change theory, and none have used a thematic analysis to understand which constructs may have contributed to behavioral change. We developed an online infant nutrition education web platform (Baby-Feed) based on the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT). This qualitative study aimed to identify among participants of the Baby-Feed intervention arm, which SCT behavior mediators (self-efficacy, outcome expectations, observational learning, and incentive motivation) influenced them to move them from intention into a

Associations of maternal depressive symptom trajectories with frontal electroencephalographic alpha asymmetry and internalizing behaviors in infants with and without older autistic siblings.

This study examined maternal depressive symptom trajectories and their associations with neural and behavioral outcomes in infants with and without an older autistic sibling (n = 142). Mothers reported depressive symptoms when children were 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. At 24 months, children's frontal electroencephalographic (EEG) alpha asymmetry and internalizing and externalizing behaviors were assessed. Latent class growth modeling identified three distinct maternal depressive symptom trajectories. These trajectories were not associated with older sibling status and the participating child's s

Prenatal Origins of Stress Regulation: Maternal Psychological Distress and Inflammation During Pregnancy Prospectively Predict Infant Behavioral Reactivity and Regulation.

Evolutionary-developmental theories of stress responsivity contend that the in utero environment shapes offspring biobehavioral regulation in a manner that promotes postnatal functioning. To elucidate how the prenatal environment influences stress regulation, this study tested associations of maternal psychological distress and inflammation during pregnancy, based on both levels and changes over time, with infant behavioral stress regulation (n = 118). In early, mid, and late pregnancy, mothers reported on depressive and anxiety symptoms and completed blood draws that were assayed for pro-infl
