Circulation. Arrhythmia and electrophysiology2013eng
BACKGROUND: Ventricular arrhythmia-related sudden cardiac arrest in infants with structurally normal hearts is rare. There have been no previously published reports of infants <3 months of age with ventricular fibrillation in which a primary diagnosis could not be defined.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Retrospective chart review of 3 unrelated infants <2 months of age from 3 different tertiary care centers within the United States and Australia was conducted. All 3 infants survived sudden cardiac arrest secondary to multiple episodes of polymorphic ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation.

UNLABELLED: Despite the fact that botulism was described in Germany for the first time by Kerner in 1820, the disease is almost forgotten in this country. Only about 10-20 cases of classical botulism (intoxication) are recorded every year, including 1-2 cases of clinical infant botulism. As we assumed a high incidence of botulism to be connected with cases of sudden infant death (SID), we undertook the research work presented here. From every case of unexpected infant death up to 12 months of age, standardised specimens (blood, liver and intestine) were taken at autopsy. They were tested for t

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the prevalence of infant care practices in a metropolitan community in the United States with attention to feeding routines and modifiable risk factors associated with sudden unexplained infant death (specifically, prone sleeping position, bed sharing, and maternal smoking).
METHODS: We conducted an initial face-to-face meeting followed by a telephone survey of 189 women who gave birth at a level I hospital in Kentucky between October 14 and November 10, 2002, and whose infants were placed in the well-infant nursery. The survey, composed of questions pertaining to infa

Apnea characteristics of infants, who were destined to die, were compared with control infants, matched for gestational age, sex, birth weight and age at sleep study. From 1989 to 1994 polygraphic recordings were performed in 4268 infants. In this population 7 cases of sudden infant death (SID) and 13 deaths from other causes (non-SID) occurred. Concerning all forms of apneas a higher frequency and maximal duration was found in the SID group. The number of infants with obstructive apneas and the number of obstructive apneas per infant were higher in future SID victims, as was the frequency, me

OBJECTIVE: To describe the relationship between antenatal and intrapartum factors and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
METHODOLOGY: The New Zealand Cot Death Study was a 3 year case-control study, with 485 infants who died from SIDS in the postneonatal period and 1800 randomly selected control infants. Data were obtained from obstetric records, parental interview and community nursing records.
RESULTS: This study confirms many of the antenatal and intrapartum risk factors for SIDS noted in studies from both the southern and northern hemispheres. After controlling for potential confounder

The significance of minor myocardial inflammatory infiltrates and viral detection in SIDS is controversial. We retrospectively compared the demographic profiles, myocardial inflammation, cardiomyocyte necrosis, and myocardial virus detection in infants who died of SIDS in a safe sleep environment, accidental suffocation, or myocarditis. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded myocardial sections were semiquantitatively assessed for CD3 lymphocytes and CD68 macrophages using immunohistochemistry and for cardiomyocyte cell death in H&E-stained sections. Enteroviruses and adenoviruses were searched for

OBJECTIVE: To investigate underascertainment of unexpected infant deaths at the national level as a result of probable classification as attributable to unknown cause.
METHODS: Using linked birth and death certificates for all US birth cohorts from 1983-1991 and 1995-1996, we identified 53 470 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) fatalities, 9071 unintentional injury deaths, 3473 injury deaths classified with intentional or suspicious intent, and 8097 deaths with unknown underlying cause. For these deaths, we compared relative risks (RRs) for maternal and infant variables available on birth ce

Within sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) reside several primary phenomena. These include a state of immune immaturity, susceptibility to infection, and an inflammatory state. Most SIDS risk factors increase the risk of infection (prematurity, lack of breastfeeding, low or absent transplacental antibody, ethnicity, genetics, specific gene polymorphisms associated with susceptibility to infection, poverty, etc.). Most SIDS cases display evidence of an inflammatory state (raised inflammatory markers and inflammatory cytokines). The pattern of inflammation is very similar to that observed follow

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Maternal substance use during pregnancy heightens risk of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), including through unsafe sleep practices. Families impacted by substance use frequently experience disproportionate social drivers of poor health and family vulnerability likely contributory to fatality risk. Characteristics of sleep-related SUID among infants born prenatally substance exposed versus nonexposed were compared to identify targeted prevention opportunities.
METHODS: Using the Sudden Death in the Young Registry, we examined SUID with sleep-related death betw

We aimed to investigate the potential added value of postmortem MRI (PMMRI) in sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) cases referred to our center between September 2020 and June 2023. Ultimately, 19 SUID cases underwent PMMRI alongside standard autopsy procedures, which included technical examinations such as postmortem CT (PMCT). Four radiologists, two with prior PMMRI experience, provided structured reports following consensus. For each case, the responsible forensic medicine specialist documented the cause of death before and after reviewing the PMMRI report. Additionally, they assessed the

Microbial communities associated with the human body are highly dynamic and reflect the host environment and lifestyle over time. Studies show death is no exception, with data demonstrating similar antemortem and postmortem microbiomes up to 48 h following death. These predictable microbial biomarkers can inform death investigation by helping to estimate the postmortem interval and build models to identify cause and manner of death. However, no attempts have been made to model potential microbial biomarkers in pediatric (≤2 years) deaths. This study provided a cross-sectional survey of the mic

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) continues to be one of the top causes of infant death in the U.S. Despite significant public health initiatives focused on high-risk populations to enhance sleep environments and techniques. The SIDS rate has remained stable in recent years. Risk factors and newer risk reduction strategies for SIDS are the focus of this review article. We conducted a comprehensive literature search on Medline, Cochrane, Embase, and Google Scholar until July 2022. The following search strings and Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms were used: "SIDS," "Sudden Infant Death" an

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the third leading cause of death among infants younger than one year of age. Effective SIDS prediction models have yet to be developed. Hence, we developed a risk score for SIDS, testing contemporary factors including infant exposure to passive smoke, circumcision, and sleep position along with known risk factors based on 291 SIDS and 242 healthy control infants. The data were retrieved from death certificates, parent interviews, and medical records collected between 1989−1992, prior to the Back to Sleep Campaign. Multivariable logistic regression models

BACKGROUND: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 has affected millions of people, and especially in adult patients with underlying diseases lead to death. Meanwhile pediatric patients with inherited defects of T cell should be prone to viral diseases.
CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report an infant with severe combined immunodeficiencies, who were affected and died because of COVID-19.
CONCLUSION: Considering the importance of finding how immune system can affect the viral infection, presentation of COVID-19 in immune deficient patients can be valuable.

Two cases of occult pseudoaneurysms of the sinus of Valsalva (SoV) are reported to demonstrate different etiologies and lethal mechanisms. A previously well 9-month-old boy who suffered an unexpected fatal cardiorespiratory arrest was found at autopsy to have a ruptured pseudoaneurysm of the left SoV resulting in lethal hemopericardium. A 13.5-month-old boy died soon after presenting with a 24-h history of poor feeding and reduced urine output. At autopsy, destruction of the noncoronary cusp of the aortic valve by bacterial endocarditis was found with extension of the inflammation into a pseud

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is defined as the sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene and review of the clinical history. SIDS is one of the leading causes of infant mortality and occurs from the first month, until the first year of life for newborns and infants. The aim of this review was to identify and examine risk factors responsible for causing the sudden infant death and to propose certain measures in order to protect newborns and infan

OBJECTIVE: To detect factors associated with greater risk of death in infants after an apparent life-threatening event (ALTE).
METHODS: This cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive and analytic study evaluated infants younger than 12 months who had a sudden event of cyanosis, pallor, hypotonia or apnea and were seen in the emergency department of a tertiary university hospital. Forward stepwise logistic regression (Wald) was used to calculate and adjust odds ratios to evaluate associations.
RESULTS: Mean age of the 145 patients included in the study was 105 days (median = 65 days). Eleve

Death has occurred when there is irreversible loss of integration of the organism as a whole, and brain death is said to be a criterion for death. In the present case, a 10-month-old boy was found submerged in a bathtub and was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation for 37 minutes. He had received therapeutic dosing of phenobarbital and midazolam up to 5 hours prior to a brain death examination. He fulfilled all criteria for brain death according to Canadian Neurological Determination of Death Forum recommendations on an examination 42 hours after the drowning event, but started breathing another

Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is defined as the sudden and unexpected death of an infant less than 12 months of age that occurs during sleep and remains unexplained after a complete autopsy, death scene investigation, and review of the clinical history. It is the leading cause of postneonatal mortality in the developed world. The cause of SIDS is unknown, but is postulated to involve impairment of brainstem-mediated homeostatic control. Extensive evidence from animal studies indicates that serotonin (5-HT) neurons in the medulla oblongata play a role in the regulation of multiple aspects
