Non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder that affects the gastrointestinal tract, operating independently of IgE. While eosinophilic inflammation has been implicated in the literature, its precise role in the pathophysiology of non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy remains poorly understood. We report the first documented case of severe non-IgE-mediated gastrointestinal food allergy in which eosinophil infiltration, eosinophil extracellular traps, and Charcot-Lyden crystals were observed in the tissue. A 1-month-old female infant presented with fev

Current guidelines recommend that infants are exclusively breast fed for the first 6 months of life, with particular solid foods being gradually introduced from 6 months. Our objective was to compare the growth of infants whose feeding most closely followed current guidelines with the growth of infants with other feeding practices. Participants were 1740 infants in a prospective cohort study in Southampton, UK. At 6 and 12 months, infants' milk feeding was recorded, diets assessed using food frequency questionnaires (FFQ), and anthropometry performed. Principal components analysis was used to

Food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy that presents primarily in infancy. Managing nutrition in infants with FPIES presents unique challenges due to its lack of diagnostic biomarkers and the high potential for feeding difficulties, restricted diets, and growth faltering. Breastfed infants may occasionally react to trace food proteins in human milk, requiring maternal elimination diets and cautious reintroduction strategies. Formula-fed infants with cow's milk- or soy-triggered FPIES may need extensively hydrolyzed or amino acid-based formulas. I

The objective of this cohort study was to assess the relationship between banana given as early solid food with the symptoms of intestinal obstruction (SIO) among neonates, in a rural community in West Lombok District, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Mothers having newborn infants were interviewed and 3,420 neonates were followed for 28 days. Compared with infants who were not given solid food, the relative risk (RR) for infants given food other than banana as early solid food was 1.87, 95% CI 0.48-8.24, p=0.4, while for infants given banana only as early solid food the RR was 9.15, 95

Background/Objectives: Appetite-regulating hormones are bioactive components of human milk. We tested the associations of leptin and adiponectin with infant growth and eating behaviors to age 6 months. Methods: In a cohort of 70 healthy, full-term infants and their mothers, human milk adiponectin and leptin were assayed at age 2 months (m). At infant ages 2, 4, and 6 m, infant anthropometry was obtained, mothers reported feeding frequency, duration, and breastfeeding intensity and completed the Baby Eating Behavior Questionnaire (Enjoyment of Food, Food Responsiveness, and General Appetite), a

The first 1000 days of life lay the foundations for subsequent growth. This ambidirectional study, including prenatal, perinatal and postnatal factors, aimed to identify exposure variables affecting body size and composition and corresponding Z-score outcomes at age 18 months in infants born to women at low risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in a peri-urban area of South Africa. Prenatal factors (maternal age, HIV status, anthropometry, parity, food insecurity and umbilical artery resistance index Z-score (UmA-RIAZ) as a measure of placental function, with higher UmA-RIAZ indicating poorer pla

Mycotoxin exposure is a major public health concern in Africa due to food insecurity that compromises food safety. Infants and young children are highly vulnerable due to immature immunity and higher food intake per body weight. However, data on mycotoxin exposure in Africa remain limited. This study investigated mycotoxin exposure in Nigerian infant-mother pairs and toddlers using biological samples (breast milk, infant/toddler urine) collected from three agro-ecological zones. Overall, 75.6% of all the samples tested positive for at least one mycotoxin. Zearalenone, aflatoxin M1, ochratoxin

BACKGROUND: Health consequences of food insecurity among infants and toddlers have not been fully examined. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between household food insecurity, mother's infant feeding practices and iron status of 6-24 months children.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 423 mother-child pairs were randomly selected by multistage sampling method. Children blood samples were analyzed for hemoglobin and serum ferritin concentrations. Household food security was evaluated using a validated Household Food Insecurity Access Scale. The mother's feeding pra

During the first year of life the diet must promote the appropriate physical growth and development, as well to form early healthy food habits. The World Health Organization recommends that infant's intake mother's milk during two first years of life, being the exclusive food in first semester. However since the sixth months of life this Organization also recommends to add at infant diet other foods different to the human milk. This new foods must have the consistency that permits to infant swallowed without chew; they must be gradually increased until incorporate at the end of the first year

Commercially produced complementary foods (CPCF) that are iron fortified can help improve iron status of young children. We conducted a review of 217 CPCF sold in 42 stores in Bandung, Indonesia, in 2017. There were 95 (44%) infant cereals, 71 (33%) snacks or finger foods (biscuits or cookies, puffs, and noodles or crackers), 35 (16%) purees, and 16 (7%) other foods for which we obtained label information. Nearly 70% of CPCF reported iron content on their labels, but only 58% of products were reported to be fortified with iron according to ingredient lists. Among iron-fortified products, only

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Parents shape children's early experiences with food, influencing what is served, children's food choices, and how much children eat. Responsive parenting (RP) interventions such as INSIGHT have improved maternal infant feeding practices, but have only been tested among predominantly White families. This secondary analysis of data from the Sleep SAAF (Strong African American Families) RCT tests the effects of an RP intervention designed to prevent rapid infant weight gain on African American mothers' infant feeding practices.
METHODS: Primiparous African American mother-

Francisella tularensis is a Gram-negative bacterium that can cause gastrointestinal or oropharyngeal tularemia in humans from ingestion of contaminated food or water. Despite the potential for accidental or intentional contamination of foods with F. tularensis, there are few studies on the long-term survivability of this organism in food matrices. Infant formula has previously been implicated as a vehicle for the transmission of a variety of bacterial pathogens in infants. In this study, we investigated the survival of F. tularensis in dehydrated infant formula under various storage conditions

Thiamine is an essential micronutrient that plays a key role in energy metabolism. Many populations worldwide may be at risk of clinical or subclinical thiamine deficiencies, due to famine, reliance on staple crops with low thiamine content, or food preparation practices, such as milling grains and washing milled rice. Clinical manifestations of thiamine deficiency are variable; this, along with the lack of a readily accessible and widely agreed upon biomarker of thiamine status, complicates efforts to diagnose thiamine deficiency and assess its global prevalence. Strategies to identify region

Emesis is a common symptom resulting from adverse food reactions in infants. In this article the terms food allergy and food intolerance are defined and differentiated. The immunopathophysiology of food allergies is discussed along with useful diagnostic tests. Adverse reactions to common infant nutrients such as cow's milk and soy milk are described, and therapeutic use of "hypoallergenic" formulas is outlined.

BACKGROUND: Food allergy is an adverse health effect arising from a specific immune response that occurs reproducibly on exposure to a given food. Food allergies are classified into three types: Ig(immunoglobulin)E mediated, mixed IgE and cell mediated and cell-mediated non IgE mediated. Gastrointestinal (GIT) food allergy has classically encompassed a number of different clinical entities: food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES), food protein-induced proctocolitis (FPIP), food protein-induced enteropathy and eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID).

Botulism incidence in Poland is the highest in whole European Union. Polish emigrants suffer from botulism as well. This phenomenon is supposed to be caused by Polish custom of preparing home-made food. The most frequent clinical forms of botulism are: foodborne botulism, wound botulism and infant botulism. The diagnosis is mostly made on case history, physical examination and it is confirmed by toxin detection in food remains, vomits and stool. In treatment of adult's botulism antitoxin derived from hyperimmunizated horses, but in infant botulism human immunoglobulin should be used.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends introducing complementary foods (i.e., any solid or liquid other than breast milk or infant formula) to infants at approximately age 6 months (1). Although a consensus on ideal timing is lacking, most experts agree that introduction of complementary foods before age 4 months is too early because of infant gastrointestinal and motor immaturity (1,2). In addition, early introduction prevents exclusively breastfed infants from reaching the recommended 6 months of exclusive breastfeeding (1) and might be associated with increased risk for overwei

Early infancy is a critical period for immune development. In addition to being the primary food source during early infancy, human milk also provides multiple bioactive components that shape the infant gut microbiome and immune system and provides a constant source of exposure to maternal microbiota. Given the potential interplay between allergic diseases and the human microbiome, this study aimed to characterise the milk microbiome of allergic mothers. Full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed on milk samples collected at 3 and 6 months postpartum from 196 women with allergic diseas

Francisella tularensis is a gram-negative bacterium that can cause gastrointestinal or oropharyngeal tularemia in humans from ingestion of contaminated food or water. Despite the potential for accidental or intentional contamination of foods with F. tularensis, there are no techniques currently available to detect this organism in specific food matrices. In this study, a macrophage cell culture system is combined with real-time PCR to identify F. tularensis in food matrices. The method utilizes a mouse macrophage cell line (RAW 264.7) as host for the isolation and intracellular replication of

Villous atrophy in an infant immediately suggests food intolerance. We report a case with an unusual cause. This female infant was first examined at 5 months for anorexia and failure to thrive. Intestinal biopsy showed total villous atrophy. A diet excluding gluten and cow milk proteins failed to improve her condition and the infant was hospitalized at 7 months for further investigations. The infant was hypotonic with a head lag. No other clinical sign was noted. Serum transaminases were increased 5- to 10-fold and CSF proteins concentration was increased. Metabolic investigations revealed hyp
