Toxicity assessment of repeated intravenous injections of arginine-glycine-aspartic acid peptide conjugated CdSeTe/ZnS quantum dots in mice.

BACKGROUND: Nanotechnology-based near-infrared quantum dots (NIR QDs) have many excellent optical properties, such as high fluorescence intensity, good fluorescence stability, and strong tissue-penetrating ability. Integrin αvβ3 is highly and specifically expressed in tumor angiogenic vessel endothelial cells of almost all carcinomas. Recent studies have shown that NIR QDs linked to peptides containing the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) sequence (NIR QDs-RGD) can specifically target integrin αvβ3 expressed in endothelial cells of tumor angiogenic vessels in vivo, and they offer great pot

Fatal air embolism in an extremely low birth weight infant: can it be caused by intravenous injections during resuscitation?

OBJECTIVE: A preterm infant with a birth weight of 384 g who succumbed to vigorous resuscitation for sudden respiratory failure on the third day of life is presented. Postmortem examination revealed, apart from extensive pulmonary hemorrhage, a fatal amount of air mainly in the right ventricle. We believe that this air had been introduced via peripheral venous cannulas due to inadvertent and unavoidable air admixture to each injection volume administered with a syringe, and we develop an experimental model to confirm that fatal amounts of air can indeed accumulate with frequent change over of

[Efficacy and safety of two methods of administration of granisetron injection for nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy for tumors in hematopoietic organs--a randomized crossover comparison between intravenous drip infusion and intravenous bolus injection].

We investigated the efficacy and safety of two methods of granisetron injection to treat nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy for tumors in hematopoietic organs. The methods of administration were intravenous drip infusion over 30 minutes, which is the conventional method, and intravenous bolus injection. In this study, 89.5% of patients in both groups (17/19 for each) were free from vomiting. No serious adverse events were observed in either administration group. Abnormal laboratory test values suspected to be related to granisetron were observed in 3 cases in the bolus injection group

Biodistributions and Imaging of Poly(ethylene glycol)-Conjugated Silicon Quantum Dot Nanoparticles in Osteosarcoma Models via Intravenous and Intratumoral Injections.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant tumor with relatively high mortality rates in children and adolescents. While nanoparticles have been widely used in assisting the diagnosis and treatment of cancers, the biodistributions of nanoparticles in osteosarcoma models have not been well studied. Herein, we synthesize biocompatible and highly photoluminescent silicon quantum dot nanoparticles (SiQDNPs) and investigate their biodistributions in osteosarcoma mouse models after intravenous and intratumoral injections by fluorescence imaging. The bovine serum albumin (BSA)-coated and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)

Effects of intermittent intravenous ibandronate injections on bone quality and micro-architecture in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis: the DIVA study.

In the Dosing IntraVenous Administration (DIVA) study, IV ibandronate injections (15-30 s duration) provided significantly greater gains in bone mineral density than daily oral ibandronate (P<0.001). Single transiliac bone biopsy was performed in a subgroup of women (n=109/1395) from DIVA to assess the impact of ibandronate on newly formed bone and bone remodeling. Patients received ibandronate IV injections 2 mg every 2 months, 3 mg every 3 months or oral ibandronate 2.5 mg daily, plus oral or IV placebo, as appropriate to maintain blinding. Of the 1395 participants from the DIVA study, 122 w

Neonatal intraperitoneal or intravenous injections of recombinant adeno-associated virus type 8 transduce dorsal root ganglia and lower motor neurons.

Targeting lower motor neurons (LMNs) for gene delivery could be useful for disorders such as spinal muscular atrophy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. LMNs reside in the ventral gray matter of the spinal cord and send axonal projections to innervate skeletal muscle. Studies have used intramuscular injections of adeno-associated virus type 2 (AAV2) to deliver viral vectors to LMNs via retrograde transport. However, treating large areas of the spinal cord in a human would require numerous intramuscular injections, thereby increasing viral titer and risk of immune response. New AAV serotypes, su

Acute respiratory, circulatory and pathological changes in the calf after intravenous injections of the galactan from Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides.

Twenty of 28 calves, 10-12 weeks of age when given intravenous injections of the galactan from Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides, showed transient apnoea, increased pulmonary arterial and decreased systemic arterial blood pressures, and increased packed-cell volume. Necropsy revealed haemorrhages associated with alveolar ducts and vessel walls, areas of pulmonary oedema, usually associated with the haemorrhages, dilated airways and, in some, capillary thrombosis. Animals that had shown changes in blood pressure and respiration in response to a dose of galactan did not react to a second dose

Intravenous injection of lipid-free apolipoprotein A-I dampens inflammation by reprogramming macrophage function.

High-density lipoproteins (HDLs) and their main protein, apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), are considered immunomodulators of the vascular wall. However, the precise mechanisms are incompletely understood. Using intravital microscopy, flow cytometry, experimental ex vivo models, and bulk RNA sequencing of cultured macrophages, this study reveals the immunomodulatory capacity of apoA-I, which is validated in representative inflammatory models. Intravital imaging in mice shows specific uptake of intravenously injected, lipid-free apoA-I by dermal perivascular macrophages. Supraphysiological doses of

Evaluation of the Functionality in an Emergency Department Setting of an Intravenous Protection Device to Prevent Self-Injection.

BACKGROUND: The United States has an opioid abuse crisis that has been increasing exponentially since 2013. In 2021, there were 220 deaths each day from opioid overdoses in the United States alone. Patients suffering from addiction often present to the emergency department (ED) anticipating that an intravenous (IV) catheter will be placed. This catheter is then accessible for patients to self-inject illicit drugs while under medical care or elope from the facility with the IV in place to self-inject. The misuse of medical IV access is a potential source of prolonged hospitalizations and fatal

Intravenous misuse of slow-release oral morphine capsules: how much morphine is injected?

BACKGROUND: The injection of morphine from morphine sulfate capsules containing sustained-release microbeads (Skenan®) is a practice frequently described by French intravenous opioid users. They seek an injectable form of substitution for heroin. Depending on how the syringe is prepared, the morphine rates may vary. The dosage of the capsule, the temperature of the dissolving water and the type of filter used have been identified as the parameters most likely to influence the final quantity of morphine in solution before intravenous injection. The aim of our study was to determine the amounts

Consecutive intra-umbilical vein injection of misoprostol and intravenous sulprostone in the management of retained placenta.

INTRODUCTION: Consecutive intra-umbilical vein injection of misoprostol and intravenous sulprostone in the management of retained placenta (RP). PURPOSE: The general accepted treatment of RP is manual removal of the placenta (MRP), but medical intervention protocols were suggested. We evaluate a protocol of using intra-umbilical vein injection of misoprostol followed, if necessary, by intravenous sulprostone. A reduction in the need for MRP and less blood loss was expected. METHODS: Cohort A (1 January 2007 to 31 September 2008), managed by an expectative protocol including active management

Distribution and resorption of polymeric microparticles in visceral organs of laboratory animals after intravenous injection.

Microparticles obtained by using (14)C-labeled resorbable hydroxyaminobutyric acid polymer were injected into the caudal vein of laboratory animals without negative aftereffects for their growth and development and without changes in the macro- and microstructure of organs and tissues. The distribution of microparticles in the viscera and the dynamics of accumulation of carbon-containing polymer degradation products in the viscera were studied. The main targets for the particles are liver tissues, as well as renal and splenic tissues. The polymeric matrix of the microparticles is most actively

Cardiovascular responses to intravenous injection of a novel isoindolin-1-one derivate in conscious rats.

An isoindolin-1-one derivate, JM-1232(-), was recently developed as a sedative and hypnotic agent with a strong affinity for the central benzodiazepine binding site of gamma-aminobutyric acid(A) (GABA(A)) receptors. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of JM-1232(-) on the cardiovascular and sympathetic functions of conscious rats. We investigated the effect of JM-1232(-) on the mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), baroreflex activity, and plasma catecholamine levels in conscious rats. The intravenous (i.v.) administration of JM-1232(-) (0.1, 0.3, and 1.0 mg/kg/min) f
