Eradication and elimination strategies for lymphatic filariasis (LF) primarily rely on multiple rounds of annual mass drug administration (MDA), but also may benefit from vector control interventions conducted by malaria vector control programs. We aim to examine the overlap in LF prevalence and malaria vector control to identify potential gaps in program coverage. We used previously published geospatial estimates of LF prevalence from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, as well as publicly available insecticide-treated net (ITN) access (proportion of the total population with acc

BACKGROUND: Travel is a well-recognized risk factor for malaria. Within sub-Saharan Africa, travellers from areas of lower to higher transmission intensity are potentially at high risk of malaria. Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the primary tool for prevention of malaria, and their widespread use has contributed to substantial reductions in malaria burden. However, travellers often fail to use LLINs. To further explore the challenges and opportunities of using LLINs, travellers were interviewed in Uganda.
METHODS: In August and September 2019, 20 participants attending outpatient c

At a time when Bhutan is on the verge of malaria elimination, the aim of this study was to identify malaria clusters at high geographical resolution and to determine its association with local environmental characteristics. Malaria cases from 2006-2014 were obtained from the Vector-borne Disease Control Program under the Ministry of Health, Bhutan. A Zero-Inflated Poisson multivariable regression model with a conditional autoregressive (CAR) prior structure was developed. Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation with Gibbs sampling was used to estimate posterior parameters. A total

BACKGROUND: Substantial progress has been made in reducing the burden of malaria in Africa since 2000, but those gains could be jeopardised if the COVID-19 pandemic affects the availability of key malaria control interventions. The aim of this study was to evaluate plausible effects on malaria incidence and mortality under different levels of disruption to malaria control.
METHODS: Using an established set of spatiotemporal Bayesian geostatistical models, we generated geospatial estimates across malaria-endemic African countries of the clinical case incidence and mortality of malaria, incorpo

BACKGROUND: Malaria is an important cause of illness and death across endemic regions. Considerable success against malaria has been achieved within the past decade mainly through long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). However, elimination of the disease is proving difficult as current control methods do not protect against mosquitoes biting outdoors and when people are active. Repellents may provide a personal protection solution during these times.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of topical repellents, insecticide-treated clothing, and spatial repellents on malaria transmission.

BACKGROUND: In endemic regions of sub-Saharan Africa, malaria during pregnancy (MiP) is a major preventable cause of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. Current recommended MiP prevention and control includes intermittent preventive treatment (IPTp), distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) and appropriate case management. This article explores the social and cultural context to the uptake of these interventions at four sites across Africa.
METHODS: A comparative qualitative study was conducted at four sites in three countries: Ghana, Malawi and Kenya. Individual and group

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health problem in Ethiopia, and long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs) are one of the primary preventive strategies used to control it. Gondar Zuria District, Central Gondar Zone's highest malaria-reporting district, reached 100% LLIN coverage in 2023. However, malaria cases remain high, suggesting gaps in LLIN utilization. Therefore, this study aimed to assess LLIN usage and determinants in Gondar Zuria District.
METHODS: Community-based mixed-methods study was conducted from February 1 to 28, 2025 among 700 participants selected through multistag

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a significant public health burden, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite global efforts to reduce malaria incidence, various challenges, including socio-economic disparities, insecticide resistance, and climatic factors, continue to hamper malaria elimination in Ghana. Over the years, several interventions have been implemented to combat malaria. However, the implementation of these malaria interventions and their association with the malaria burden remains unclear.
AIM: This study evaluated the epidemiological behaviour of malaria in Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality f

BACKGROUND: Global efforts to reduce malaria burden include distribution of insecticide-treated mosquito nets through mass campaigns and routine channels. Ghana's National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) distributes insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) through various channels, including to pregnant women at antenatal care (ANC) visits and children at vaccination visits through child welfare clinics (CWC). This study assessed historical ITN distribution throughout ANCs and CWCs across Ghana and the characteristics of high performing facilities.
METHODS: Monthly data on routine ITN distrib

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) were first introduced in 2010 as a vector control intervention, to complement indoor residual spraying, to reduce malaria transmission in Zimbabwe. The objective of this study was to investigate factors that were associated with LLIN ownership and utilization among households in malaria transmission regions of Zimbabwe.
METHODS: A secondary analysis of cross sectional data from the Zimbabwe demographic and health survey (ZDHS) conducted in 2010 and 2015 surveys round was conducted. The analysis used household-level datasets from across the co

Malaria, a febrile disease caused by the Plasmodium parasites and transmitted by mosquitoes, is a leading cause of mortality in children under 5 in endemic countries. The widespread deployment of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) has significantly reduced malaria transmission, but rising levels of insecticide resistance threaten to halt the progress. Monitoring insecticide resistance is vital for effective vector control, particularly when deploying new tools. Understanding mosquito population responses to these interventions is crucial for guiding control programmes in making informed decis

The East Region of Cameroon has over 150 malaria cases per 1000 inhabitants per year. Factors contributing to this high malaria prevalence are not well understood. This study assessed the bionomics of vectors involved in malaria transmission, their susceptibility to insecticides, and the efficacy of insecticide-treated nets. Entomological studies were conducted twice yearly in Belabo and Ouami from 2021 to 2023 using both human landing catches and CDC light traps to collect adult mosquitoes. Anopheline species were separated using morphological identification keys and Anopheles gambiae (s.l.)

INTRODUCTION: Although Zambia does not rank among the highest contributors to global malaria cases, in 2023, it had approximately eleven million cases. Furthermore, Zambia's malaria incidence distribution is spatially heterogeneous at fine scales such as health facility catchment areas (HFCAs). HFCA-level malaria incidence stratification currently guides implementation and targeting approaches. We aim to enhance the current stratification approach by incorporating archetypical characteristics associated with malaria, including environmental, access, epidemiological, and socioeconomic factors.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a deadly vector-borne disease that causes an estimated 500 000 new cases a year. In India, Nepal and Bangladesh, VL is caused by Leishmania donovani, which is transmitted from man to man by the sandfly Phlebotomus argentipes. In 2005, these three countries signed a memorandum of understanding to eliminate VL from the region. Integrated vector management is one of the pillars of this elimination strategy, alongside early case detection and treatment. We reviewed the evidence of effectiveness of different vector control methods, to examine the potential role of ins

In this paper, we aim to systematically analyze the effectiveness of community based interventions (CBI) for the prevention and control of non-helminthic diseases including dengue, trypanosomiasis, chagas, leishmaniasis, buruli ulcer, leprosy and trachoma. We systematically reviewed literature published up to May 2013 and included 62 studies in this review. Findings from our review suggest that CBI including insecticide spraying; insecticide treated bednets and curtains; community education and cleanliness campaigns; chemoprophylaxis through mass drug administration; and treatment have the pot

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) in Uganda is caused by Wuchereria bancrofti and transmitted by anopheline mosquitoes. The mainstay of elimination has been annual mass drug administration (MDA) with ivermectin and albendazole, targeted to endemic districts, but has been sporadic and incomplete in coverage. Vector control could potentially contribute to reducing W. bancrofti transmission, speeding up progress towards elimination. To establish whether the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) can contribute towards reducing transmission of W. bancrofti in a setting with ongoing MDA,

The effect of insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITMNs) on Japanese Encephalitis (JE) virus seroconversion in pigs and humans was studied in Assam, Northeast India. A sharp reduction of seroconversion rate in human and pig was found in treated localities after intervention. A marked reduction was achieved in humans (risk ratio [RR] = 0.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.16-0.49) and pigs (RR = 0.21, CI = 0.11-0.40) in the Kollolua locality where ITMNs were used on both humans and pigs compared with the other two area, Athabari and Rajmai, where ITMNs were covering only either humans or pigs.

BACKGROUND: The WHO recently recommended the widespread use of new classes of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) to control malaria, but there is little evidence of their efficacy in pregnant women. This study aimed to assess the impact of two dual active ingredient (AI) LLINs on poor birth outcomes under pragmatic conditions.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted during March-May 2023 in 1644 women of reproductive age who delivered in the 3 y following net distribution. Multivariate logistic regression models with random effects were used to assess the dual AI L

BACKGROUND: The fabric integrity of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) deteriorates over time during household use, often leading households to discard or stop using damaged nets. This study quantified the extent to which net loss from households is attributable to declining fabric integrity, accounting for variation in user behaviour and environmental conditions.
METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from an ITN durability trial in Bagamoyo, Tanzania. A total of 2,514 ITNs (three pyrethroid-PBO and one pyrethroid-only) distributed among 1,509 households were included because they had the o
