Participation in the 2005 general election by adults with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: International and UK legislation confirms and supports the right of adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) to vote. It is widely accepted, although not previously empirically confirmed, that citizens with ID are under-represented at the polls. METHOD: To document the extent of their under-representation at the polls, the names and addresses of adults using services for people with ID in one county in the UK, were compared with the marked electoral register following the 2005 general election. Adults using services for people with ID were identified either as un-registered, as

An epidemiological and aetiological study of children with intellectual disability in Taiwan.

A large-scale cytogenetic study of the causes of intellectual disability (ID) in children from special schools and institutions was made in Taiwan between 1991 and 1996. The screening methods and the identification of subjects with ID consisted of both clinical evaluation (i.e. photographs, questionnaires on family, pre-, peri- and postnatal history, and hospital records, including IQ) and further laboratory studies for diagnosis (i.e. standard chromosome analysis, and if indicated, high-resolution banding, cytogenetic fragile-X study or molecular techniques). A total of 11,892 patients were e

Stigma Resistance by Adult Self-Advocates With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: People with intellectual disabilities continue to experience stigmatisation, yet little is known about how they manage or resist stigma. The present study aimed to qualitatively explore stigma resistance, including barriers to and facilitators of stigma resistance, from the perspective of self-advocates with intellectual disabilities. METHOD: Sixteen adult self-advocates participated in semi-structured virtual interviews. Thematic analysis was used to analyse interview transcripts. RESULTS: Four themes were identified: (i) asserting oneself, (ii) speaking out, (iii) using lived e

[Assessment of the effects of ornithotherapy in psychiatric patients with intellectual disabilities].

INTRODUCTION: Animal-assisted therapies are increasingly applied in rehabilitation and complementary care, particularly in supporting mental and neurocognitive conditions. The targeted therapeutic use of songbirds and their vocalizations (ornithotherapy) represents a relatively novel approach that remains underrepresented in the international literature, especially regarding objectively measurable physiological outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to evaluate the effects of an ornithotherapy intervention on blood pressure and pulse rate in a residential institution caring for individ

Preparticipation and Sideline Evaluation of Athletes with Intellectual and Developmental Disability.

Individuals with intellectual and developmental disability face several barriers to participation in sports and physical activity. Fortunately, there are opportunities for athletes with intellectual and developmental disability to participate in sport. Special Olympics continues to be the most prominent opportunity. Unfortunately, many physicians and other health care providers may feel underprepared to evaluate and treat athletes with intellectual and developmental disability. While national and international events often have a large number of resources available, access to medical care for

The stigma of intellectual disability in Spain: a nationally representative survey.

BACKGROUND: Stigma towards people with intellectual disability affects various aspects of their lives, including access to employment, housing, health and social care services. Furthermore, this stigma reduces their social opportunities and is even reflected in laws that diminish their autonomy. Due to the practical significance of this issue, the aim of this research is to explore for the first time the social stigma associated with intellectual disability in a representative sample of the Spanish population. METHOD: A cross-sectional quantitative descriptive study was conducted, involving a

People with Intellectual Disabilities, Dysphagia and Post-Covid Syndrome.

People with Intellectual Disability (ID) were more likely to contract COVID-19 infection and more likely to die from the consequences. However, there is no evidence on the long-term impact of COVID-19 infection in people with ID. Post-Covid Syndrome (PCS) is an established diagnosis that requires specialist clinical support. To date there is no data on how common PCS is in people with ID, or how symptoms present. Dysphagia is identified as a clinical marker because of the known association with PCS, and the clear objective diagnostic criteria applicable through specialist assessment. This inve

Sleep: the neglected life factor in adults with intellectual disabilities.

Sleep is vital for our physical and mental health. Studies have shown that there is a high prevalence of sleep disorders and sleep difficulties amongst adults with intellectual disabilities. Despite this, sleep is often overlooked or its disorders are considered to be difficult to treat in adults with intellectual disabilities. There is a significant amount of research and guidance on management of sleep disorders in the general population. However, the evidence base for sleep disorders in adults with intellectual disabilities is limited. In this review paper, we look at the current evidence b

Recognising side effects of antipsychotics in children with intellectual disabilities.

Risperidone and aripiprazole are increasingly used for behavioural indications in children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities, including autism. Although there are some reports in literature, the side effect profile in this population remains poorly defined and there is a need to raise awareness among clinicians across specialties. We present two patients with significant intellectual disabilities who developed extrapyramidal side effects (EPSE) including oculogyric crisis following risperidone and aripiprazole use. The onset of these side effects can be insidious and the non-speci

Experiences of Bias Victimization Among People With Intellectual Disabilities.

Research has drawn attention to the stigma and high rates of victimization among people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and an overlap between bias and non-bias victimization. However, studies of bias events or hate crime involving persons with ID are scarce. Using a self-report measure, we analyze lifetime bias victimization in a sample of 260 adults diagnosed with ID (age M = 41.7, SD = 12.0; 59.2% men), of whom 92 experienced bias victimization (age M = 41.2, SD = 11.9; 54.3% men), and compare the number of different types of victimization and the poly-victimization status between bias
