Effect of metabolic control on cognitive functions in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

OBJECTIVES: Neurocognitive functions of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) are reported to be poorer than those of healthy peers. The aim was to investigate the effects of age of onset of diabetes, metabolic control, and type of insulin regimen on neurocognitive functions in children and adolescents with T1D. METHODS: Forty-seven children aged 6-18 years, with T1D for at least five years, were included. Children with a known psychiatric disorder or chronic diseases other than T1D were excluded. Intelligence via the Wechsler children's intelligence scale (WISC-R), short-term memory v

Assessment of intelligence quotient in patients with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disease and multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is common in people living with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disease (NMOSD) and multiple sclerosis (MS). However, there is little published data on intelligence quotient (IQ) in NMOSD patients. Therefore, we performed the present study to compare IQ scores across NMOSD, MS, and control groups. METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, 49 NMOSD (30 with positive aquaporin4 antibody), 41 MS, and 20 control individuals were recruited. The IQ score for each person was measured using Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R). Participants were reported on e

Emotion knowledge in young neglected children.

Young neglected children may be at risk for emotion knowledge deficits. Children with histories of neglect or with no maltreatment were initially seen at age 4 and again 1 year later to assess their emotion knowledge. Higher IQ was associated with better emotion knowledge, but neglected children had consistently poorer emotion knowledge over time compared to non-neglected children after controlling for IQ. Because both neglected status and IQ may contribute to deficits in emotional knowledge, both should be assessed when evaluating these children to appropriately design and pace emotion knowle

Theory of mind in non-retarded children with autism and Asperger's syndrome. A research note.

In the present study, 20 non-retarded children with autism and 20 non-retarded children with Asperger's syndrome, individually matched to the group of children with autism, participated. No statistically significant differences between the groups were found in the theory of mind tasks. In fact, the two groups performed almost as well as a group of normal children. These findings suggest that the theory of mind model has its limitations in explaining autism and that children with Asperger's syndrome are not more competent in theory of mind tasks than children with autism within the normal range

[Cognitive functioning in adolescent depression].

In childhood and adolescent depression, the interaction between cognitive and emotional disorders is particularly evident: intellectual dysfunctioning often accompanies and integrates the clinical symptomatology. The studies on cognitive functioning have focused their attention on basic cognitive abilities; relatively fewer studies have analyzed other dimensions, such as logical reasoning. Furthermore, most studies have compared depressed patients to normal controls; this methodology tends to obscure the specific effect depression may have on cognitive functioning. The aim of our study is to a

Superior fluid intelligence in children with Asperger's disorder.

Asperger's disorder is one of autistic spectrum disorders; sharing clinical features with autism, but without developmental delay in language acquisition. There have been some studies of intellectual functioning in autism so far, but very few in Asperger's disorder. In the present study, we investigated abstract reasoning ability, whose form of intelligence has been labeled fluid intelligence in the theory of Cattell [Cattell, R. B. (1963). Theory of fluid and crystallized intelligence: A critical experiment. Journal of Educational Psychology, 54, 1-22.], in children with Asperger's disorder.

Impulse control, working memory and other executive functions in preterm children when starting school.

AIM: The aim of this study was to explore whether children born preterm have deficient executive functions (EF) in comparison with children born at full term, and, if so, whether this is dependent on inferior intelligence scores and can be correlated to specific neonatal risk factors and gender. METHODS: In a population-based study, the executive functions of 182 preterm children (birthweight less than 1500 g, VLBW) and 125 controls from the Stockholm Neonatal Project were assessed at 5 1/2 y with a neuropsychological test battery (Nepsy 1990). RESULTS: The controls surpassed the VLBW childr

Mitigating environmental public health risks via artificial intelligence: mechanisms and boundary conditions.

BACKGROUND: Environmental pollution threatens population health through multiple and overlapping pathways, including gaseous emissions, wastewater discharge, and industrial solid waste. Artificial intelligence (AI) can improve environmental monitoring, energy management, and production optimization, but its broader relationship with multidimensional environmental public health risks remains insufficiently understood. This study examines whether and under what conditions artificial intelligence is associated with lower pollution-related environmental public health risks. METHODS: Provincial pa

Single-lead electrocardiograms and artificial intelligence for managing cardiac rhythm irregularities in general practice: A French general practitioners' survey.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rhythm irregularities, including atrial fibrillation, atrial premature beats and ventricular premature beats, are the reason for about 33% of electrocardiogram tests performed by general practitioners. Artificial intelligence has shown diagnostic accuracy in electrocardiogram analysis equivalent to that of cardiologists, and single-lead electrocardiograms offer simplified usability. AIMS: To assess the acceptability and utility of a simplified single-lead electrocardiogram device in general practice, integrated with artificial intelligence-based interpretation and a clinic

Cognitive patterns of children with dyslexia: a comparison between groups with high and average nonverbal intelligence.

We tested the hypothesis that children with dyslexia identified by word decoding deficit will be poor in specific cognitive processes that require successive processing and rapid articulation, irrespective of their high or average nonverbal IQ. Children with dyslexia and normally achieving children between 9 years and 11 years of age were divided into four groups comprising average-IQ and high-IQ children with dyslexia and normal readers. All children were administered measures of planning, attention-arousal, simultaneous and successive processes, phonemic segmentation, and nonverbal IQ. Resul

Fluctuating asymmetry in brain structure and general intelligence in 73-year-olds.

Fluctuating body asymmetry is theorized to indicate developmental instability, and to have small positive associations with low socioeconomic status (SES). Previous studies have reported small negative associations between fluctuating body asymmetry and cognitive functioning, but relationships between fluctuating brain asymmetry and cognitive functioning remain unclear. The present study investigated the association between general intelligence (a latent factor derived from a factor analysis on 13 cognitive tests) and the fluctuating asymmetry of four structural measures of brain hemispheric a

Feasibility of Speech Testing Using Wireless Connection in Single-Sided Cochlear Implant Users.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The speech tests used to evaluate language performance in patients with bilateral deafness (BiD) and cochlear implant (CI) are problematic if applied to patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) because normal ear hearing should be excluded. Thus, we investigated the feasibility of using wireless connection to evaluate speech intelligibility of the CI ear in patients with SSD. Subjects and. Examination of teachers' emotional intelligence competence perception levels in terms of sportive activity and different variables.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines whether teachers' emotional intelligence (EI) competence perception levels specifically dimensions such as self-regulation, empathy, and social skills-differ according to sports activity and demographic variables. EI plays a crucial role in fostering effective classroom management and teacher-student interaction. It was hypothesized that teachers who engage in both individual and team sports would demonstrate higher levels of emotional intelligence compared to those who do not participate in sports or engage in only one type. METHOD: Using a descriptive surve

Patterns of change in nonverbal cognition in adolescents with Down syndrome.

This study was designed to examine longitudinal change in nonverbal cognitive abilities across adolescence for 20 males with Down syndrome (DS). We used hierarchical linear modeling to examine the rate of change in performance on the subtests of the Leiter-R Brief IQ across four annual time points and to determine the relation between maternal IQ and level and rate of change in performance. Results indicated no significant change in IQ (standard scores) with age in the sample, suggesting IQ stability during adolescence for individuals with DS, although several participants performed at floor l
