Classifying Internet Addiction Using Machine Learning Approach: A Study Among Adolescents in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) among adolescents is growing worldwide. Online temptation is particularly strong for adolescents due to rapid physical and cognitive development. IA may impair their mental, emotional, social, and physical health. Few traditional studies were conducted in Bangladesh. Thus, this study aimed to identify adolescents' IA risk factors using advanced machine learning (ML). METHODS: A total of 385 individuals were convenience sampled and surveyed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), the UCLA Loneliness Scale (UCLA-3), and Young's IA Test (IAT-20) to m

Segmenting Vitiligo on Clinical Face Images Using CNN Trained on Synthetic and Internet Images.

Accurately diagnosing and describing the severity of vitiligo is crucial for prognostication, treatment selection and comparison. Currently, disease severity scores require dermatologists to estimate percentage area of involvement, which is subjected to inter and intra-assessor variability. Previous studies focus on pure skin but vitiligo on the face, which has a more serious impact on patients' quality of life, was completely neglected. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have good performance on many segmentation tasks. However, due to data privacy, it is hard to have a large clinical vitil

Haematology patients and the Internet--the use of on-line health information and the impact on the patient-doctor relationship.

OBJECTIVE: Patients access on-line health information (OHI) to better understand their health. We aimed to determine which demographic factors influence OHI use. We also explored how OHI is used and subsequent implications to the patient-doctor relationship. METHODS: We distributed a self-administered questionnaire to 202 haematology out-patients. RESULTS: 62.3% used the internet and 54.3% used OHI. Higher education, (P<0.001, OR 34.62, 95% CI 5.20-230.66) and household incomes of £15000-25000 (P=0.023 OR 4.8 95% CI 1.236-18.59) were positively associated with OHI use. Those reassured after

Surveying Indian gay men for coping skills and HIV testing patterns using the internet.

BACKGROUND: Surveying vulnerable and incarcerated populations is often challenging. Newer methods to reach and collect sensitive information in a safe, secure, and valid manner can go a long way in addressing this unmet need. Homosexual men in India live with inadequate social support, marginalization, and lack legal recognition. These make them less reachable by public health agencies, and make them more likely to continue with high-risk behaviors, and contract human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). AIMS: To understand coping skills and HIV testing patterns of homosexual men versus heterosexual

Problematic Internet Use and Mental Well-Being: The Importance Adolescents' Place on Digital Technology Interactions Moderates This Relationship.

PURPOSE: Problematic Internet use (PIU) affects around 10% of adolescents and contributes to lower well-being. However, using the Internet for social connection is associated with higher well-being. This study investigated whether the importance placed on using technology in specific ways, such as for social connection, might attenuate the association between PIU and mental well-being. METHODS: This national cross-sectional study examined whether adolescents' perceived importance of technology interactions moderated the association between PIU and mental well-being. Adolescents responded via

Predictors of Problematic Internet Use Among Gifted Children: The Role of Health Literacy and Health-Promoting Lifestyle Beliefs.

Background/Objectives: Problematic internet use (PIU) is a growing behavioral health concern among school-aged children. Whether health literacy and health-promoting lifestyle beliefs are associated with PIU among gifted children-a developmentally distinct population-has, to the best of our knowledge, not been investigated. Methods: A cross-sectional correlational design was used with 118 gifted students (M = 13.80, SD = 2.06) attending a Science and Art Center (BİLSEM) in İzmir, Türkiye. Data were collected using the Problematic Internet Use Scale-Adolescent Form (PIUS-A; α = 0.92), the Healt

Perceived safety in digital information environments: objective violence, online disinformation, internet use, and victimization across Europe, 2002-2023.

INTRODUCTION: Perceived safety is a psychologically consequential judgment shaped by objective threats, prior victimization, and mediated information. However, few studies jointly examine longitudinal crime data, national digital-information environments, and individual Internet use. METHODS: We integrated European Social Survey Rounds 1-11 with homicide data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Digital Society Project indicators, and World Development Indicators. Study 1 examined 308 country-round-year cells from 38 European countries, representing 442,100 respondents, using we

Predictors of Treatment Outcome and Engagement in Self-Guided Internet-Delivered Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Substance Use Disorders.

Background: Substance use disorders (SUD) are debilitating conditions that frequently co-occur with other mental disorders. Internet-delivered dialectical behavior therapy (iDBT) skills training may be promising for SUD; however, little research has examined predictors of engagement and treatment outcome. Methods: This is a secondary, exploratory analysis of a randomized, waitlist-controlled trial of self-guided iDBT for SUD. Participants (N = 72) were allocated to an immediate or delayed arm, with the latter receiving access after 4 weeks. All participants were followed for 12 weeks total. Th

Connecting through clicks: A longitudinal examination of internet use and depressive symptoms among middle- and old-aged Chinese.

AIM: While prior investigations into the influence of internet engagement on depressive symptoms in middle-aged and older individuals have largely been favorable, concerns persist. Some research posits that internet use may detract from direct interpersonal interactions, elevating depression risks. Here, we scrutinize these contrasting views, endeavoring to delineate the relationship between internet use, social participation, and the ensuing depressive manifestations. METHODS: We analyzed nationally representative data from three consecutive waves (2013-T1, 2015-T2, 2018-T3) of the China Hea
