A Solitary Peutz-Jeghers Hamartomatous Polyp in the Gastric Body: A Case Report.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare autosomal dominant genetic condition characterized by the development of hamartoma-type intestinal polyposis and areas of skin pigmentation, among other signs. Additionally, the occurrence of solitary Peutz-Jeghers polyps is exceedingly rare. We present the case of a 50-year-old female with a medical history of hypothyroidism, chronic gastritis, and dyslipidemia, who presented with dyspeptic symptoms and occasional rectal bleeding. Endoscopic examination revealed a solitary hamartomatous polyp in the gastric body and other gastrointestinal abnormalities.

One patient, two lymphomas, three primaries.

Concomitant adenocarcinoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, both located in the intestinal tract, are unusual. Collision tumors of the colon on the other hand are extremely rare neoplasms. A case of true collision tumor of a marginal zone lymphoma and a moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma of the ascending colon (hepatic flexure) is reported. Simultaneously, a third primary is identified as follicular lymphoma involving the terminal ileum. Correlation with clinical history, radiology investigations, endoscopic findings and histological examination of the resected specimen as well as the use of

Helicobacter pylori and colorectal neoplasms: a concise review.

Helicobacter pylori is the main etiological agent of all malignant tumors caused by an infectious disease. It is a major, at times dominant, factor in the pathogenesis of a large spectrum of diseases such as acute and chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastric carcinoma, and lymphoma. Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest that H. pylori chronic infection may be related to different extragastric diseases, including colorectal neoplasms. This concise review aims to explore the association of H. pylori infection with colorectal cancer and adenoma, including the recent epid

Diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (recommended by the Polish Network of Neuroendocrine Tumours).

Progress in the diagnostics and therapy of gastro-entero-pancreatic (GEP) neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN), the published results of new randomised clinical trials, and the new guidelines issued by the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS) have led the Polish Network of Neuroendocrine Tumours to update the 2013 guidelines regarding management of these neoplasms. We present the general recommendations for the management of NENs, developed by experts during the Third Round Table Conference - Diagnostics and therapy of gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms: Polish recommendatio

Colonoscopy in the diagnosis and management of appendiceal disease.

In this editorial, we comment on the article published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. We focused on the understanding of appendiceal disease, and the various options for diagnosis and treatment via endoscopy. Some factors affecting the diagnosis and management of appendiceal diseases are also discussed. The existence of any organ has its natural rationality, and the appendix is such a magical organ. A growing number of experts and scholars have gradually come to a consensus that the appendix is not a useless evolutionary relic. There are many lymphocyte

Clinical and Histopathological Features of an Italian Monocentric Series of Primary Small Bowel T-Cell Lymphomas.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is the most common extranodal site of occurrence of non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Most GI lymphomas are of B-cell lineage, while T-cell lymphomas are less frequent. The aim of our retrospective study was to depict the clinical-pathological profile of a series of patients affected by intestinal T-cell lymphomas (ITCL) and possibly define hallmarks of these neoplasms. A total of 28 patients were included: 17 enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphomas (EATL), 5 monomorphic epitheliotropic T-cell lymphomas (MEITL), 3 indolent T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders of the gastro

Malignancies in Patients with Celiac Disease: Diagnostic Challenges and Molecular Advances.

Celiac disease (CD) is a multiorgan autoimmune disorder of the chronic intestinal disease group characterized by duodenal inflammation in genetically predisposed individuals, precipitated by gluten ingestion. The pathogenesis of celiac disease is now widely studied, overcoming the limits of the purely autoimmune concept and explaining its hereditability. The genomic profiling of this condition has led to the discovery of numerous genes involved in interleukin signaling and immune-related pathways. The spectrum of disease manifestations is not limited to the gastrointestinal tract, and a signif

Alpha-methylacyl-CoA racemase expression is upregulated in gastric adenocarcinoma: a study of 249 cases.

Alpha-methylacyl-CoA racemase (AMACR [P504S]) is a mitochondrial and peroxisomal enzyme involved in beta-oxidation of dietary branched-chain fatty acids and their derivatives. Recent studies showed that AMACR is expressed in several neoplasms, including prostate and colon cancer. However, AMACR expression in gastric neoplasms has yet to be thoroughly investigated. Because AMACR overexpression in human solid tumors is a potential target for cancer treatment, we aimed to evaluate the expression of AMACR in a large cohort of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma. The study evaluated 249 primary ga

Villoglandular adenocarcinoma in situ of intestinal type of the hymen: de novo origin from squamous mucosa?

Adenocarcinomas of the lower genital tract are rare diseases, and most of them arise from the Bartholin glands. Villoglandular adenocarcinoma of intestinal type is a very uncommon neoplasm of unknown origin with only few cases described on the vulva and in the vagina. It is characterized by villoglandular architecture, mucinous-type epithelium with intestinal differentiation (goblet cells), and direct apposition of the tumor with the surface epithelium. We report a case that developed on the hymen of a 64-year-old woman and discuss its possible origin as arising de novo from the squamous epith

Gastrointestinal stromal tumour in Meckel's diverticulum.

BACKGROUND: Meckel's Diverticulum is the most commonly encountered congenital anomaly of the small intestine, occurring in approximately 2% of the population. Occasionally Meckel's diverticulum harbors neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 65 year old gentleman, presented with a pelvic mass. On exploratory laparotomy, it turned out to be gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) arising from Meckel's diverticulum. Short history and review of literature are discussed. CONCLUSION: Neoplasms occurring from Meckel's diverticulum, even though rare, should be considered as differential diagnosis of pelvic

Ileocolic Intussusception Secondary to Appendicular Mass in an Adult Patient: A Case Report and Radiological Approach.

Intestinal intussusception is a condition determined as the telescoping of one portion of the bowel loops into the approximate distal portion. Intestinal intussusception is a fairly rare condition in the adult population and almost always secondary to the underlying pathology; the most common leading causes of intussusception in adults are neoplasms, accounting for up to two-thirds of the causes. However, appendicular pathology is an extremely rare leading cause. The clinical picture of an adult patient with bowel intussusception (BI) is uncertain and nonspecific; it varies from vague abdomina

[Sclerosing encapsulated peritonitis. Diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for the general surgeon].

Intestinal obstruction is one of the most frequently abdominal problems that concern general surgeons. One of the infrequent causes of mechanical obstruction is sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis (SEP); this entity causes intense fibrosis of the components in the peritoneal layer, resulting in adhesion of abdominal organs. SEP can be primary or secondary; both are a type of peritoneal fibrosclerosis that causes intestinal obstruction with difficult resolution and a great number of complications. In terms of frequency and etiology, there are few data, and the problem is considerated a multifa

A diagnostic dilemma of acute abdomen in pregnancy: Leiomyoma of the small intestine.

Small intestinal tumours are rare and difficult to diagnose. This neoplasms may be responsible for haemorrhage, occlusion, perforation and subsequent emergent surgeries. A 28 year old G2P1 woman in her 22nd week of pregnancy was referred to our emergency department with a complaint of left lower abdominal pain that had begun the day before. She underwent an emergent laparotomy with the general surgeons. Histopathological examination defined the diagnosis of leiomyoma of the small intestine. Gastrointestinal pathologies should always be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of

Inflammatory pseudotumors (inflammatory fibrous polyps) of the small intestine: A clinicopathologic study.

The clinical and pathologic features of 25 inflammatory pseudotumors of the small intestine are reported. These rare lesions, which clinically may simulate neoplasms, consist of localized, frequently polypoid masses composed of inflamed fibrous and granulation tissue. Inflammatory pseudotumors may produce intussusception and small-bowel obstruction. Some are found at laparotomy performed for other reasons. The diagnosis of inflammatory pseudotumor usually can not be made until the lesion is examined histogically. Their etiology remains unknown, but their relationship to intestinal ulceration i

Importance of capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy in a multifocal neuroendocrine tumor of the ileum.

Small intestine neuroendocrine tumors (SI-NETs) are rare neoplasms with increasing incidence, accounting for 30-50% of all neoplasms in this location. We report the case of a 67-year-old woman who presented with melena. Capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy revealed submucosal lesions in the distal ileum, histologically confirmed as well-differentiated grade 1 NET (Ki-67 <3%). Endoscopic techniques play a pivotal role in the detection, localization, and histopathological grading of these tumors, which is essential for guiding therapeutic decisions. The mainstay of treatment is surgical resection w

Colitis cystica profunda associated with diverticulosis and calcification mimicking colorectal carcinoma: a case report and a brief literature review.

Colitis cystica profunda (CCP) is a rare, uncommon and nonneoplastic condition that can occur anywhere in gastrointestinal tract, but its main occurrence is in the rectum and sigmoid colon. It is characterized by the presence of mucin filled cysts, lined by benign epithelium, beneath the muscularis mucosae, usually confined to the submucosa, and it can clinically and radiologically mimic a neoplasm. Here we report a rare case of CCP in a patient with a 2-months history of abdominal pain and severe anemia, associated with diverticulosis. The knowledge of this entity and its differential diagnos

[Endoscopic Dilation to Treat One Case of Severe Intestinal Stenosis Caused by Endometriosis].

A 46-year-old woman was admitted for repeated abdominal distention and constipation for more than 10 years and further deterioration for 5 years. Colonoscopy showed, in the sigmoid colon, nodular neoplasm protruding into the cavity, resulting in local intestinal stenosis, through which the endoscopy could not pass. Pathological findings of the biopsy sample revealed changes caused by intestinal endometriosis. The patient underwent multiple endoscopic dilatation treatments in our hospital and the interval between recurrences of intestinal stenosis was extended from 6 months to 4 years. Intestin
