Murder-suicide of the jealous paranoia type: a multicenter statistical pilot study.

The authors present a pilot statistical study of murder-suicide comprising 32 cases from the years 1990-1992, collected from the offices of the medical examiners of seven counties in five of the United States. The study includes brief reviews of previous statistical surveys of murder, murder-suicide, and suicide. This present study's conclusions parallel the findings of previous research on the demographic characteristics of the perpetrators of murder-suicide, the relationship between killers and victims, the types of weapon used, locations of the incidents, and the time intervals between the

Murder followed by suicide: Norwegian data and international literature.

BACKGROUND: In Scandinavia, the knowledge base for murder-suicides is uneven, and there has been no statistics in criminal records. METHOD: We collected data from criminal registers in Norway from 1990 to 2007, and seek to compare this with international literature from the last 50 years. RESULTS: Over 90% of murder-suicide perpetrators are males and 80% of their victims are females. A vast majority of perpetrators are, or have been, intimate partners with their victim. The woman has often indicated an intention to break up from the relationship before the homicide. Compared with isolated ho

Facilitators and barriers to participation and scale-up of a non-specialist delivered psychological intervention for adolescents in low-resourced settings: a process evaluation.

Globally, the number of refugees and displaced individuals has surpassed 100 million for the first time in history. Refugees are more likely than non-refugee populations to experience psychological distress and develop mental disorders. Early Adolescent Skills for Emotion (EASE), developed by the World Health Organization, is a potentially scalable task-sharing intervention targeting symptoms of internalizing disorders such as depression and anxiety for 10-15 years old and their caregiver. Prior to this study a randomized controlled trial in Amman, Jordan was conducted showing effectiveness of

External nasal valve collapse: validation of novel outcome measurement tool.

BACKGROUND: Fatal intimate partner violence occurs among adolescents, which is often when first exposure to intimate partner violence occurs in the United States. However, research mainly examines intimate partner violence-related fatalities between adult intimate partners. Such findings document that non-intimate partners, corollary victims, are at risk for violence during intimate partner violence incidents, as well. Research examining fatal intimate partner violence among adolescents is scant. This study informs public health of the extent and circumstances of fatal adolescent intimate part

Perceived non-shared environment, personality traits, family factors and developmental experiences in bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The role of perceived non-shared environmental influences and personality traits in the risk of developing bulimia nervosa (BN) was compared in 40 women with BN and their non-eating disordered sisters. METHODS: The two sisters were compared for (a) eating pathology, (b) perceived non-shared environmental factors (differential family relationships, developmental teasing, traumatic experiences), (c) personality traits (impulsivity, affective instability, narcissism), and (d) psychopathology (anxiety, depression). RESULTS: Specific perceived non-shared risk factors (e.g. perceptions

Recognition of 'fortune of others' emotions in Asperger syndrome and high functioning autism.

'Fortune of others' emotions, such as envy and gloating over the other's misfortune, are complex emotions experienced in situations where events are presumed to be desirable or undesirable for another person. The present paper explores the notion that individuals with AS and HFA are impaired in understanding of envy and gloating. We tested the ability of adults with AS/HFA to understand envy and gloating and compared their performance to that of age-matched healthy controls. The 'fortune of others' emotion task and an additional theory-of-mind (ToM) task were based on a task designed to assess

Management of borderline personality disorder: a review of psychotherapeutic approaches.

There are currently three major psychotherapeutic approaches to the management of borderline personality disorder (BPD): the psychodynamic, the cognitive-behavioral, and the supportive. There are special varieties within each: e.g., transference-focused psychotherapy (psychodynamic) or dialectic behavioral therapy (cognitive-behavioral). Though differing in basic conceptions and in methodology, all approaches aim at the amelioration of both the symptom-aspects that dominate the clinical picture at the outset, and the personality difficulties that remain apparent after the symptoms have been al

[Utility of quetiapine in tardive dyskinesia].

INTRODUCTION: Neuroleptic induced tardive dyskinesia is a late appearing extrapyramidal disorder of involuntary, choreoatetoid movements. It may appear during chronic treatment with classical neuroleptics or a short time after its prolonged administration is interrupted. At present, there is no agreement on what would be the best way to treat dyskinesias. Clozapine is an alternative treatment to take into account, although the risk of agranulocytosis may be excessive to use it when there is a mild or moderate form of dyskinesia. Cases of improvement of dyskinesias both with olanzapine as well

Women and health workers' conceptualisations of reproductive coercion and abuse: a comparative synthesis from Brazil, Nepal, Palestine, and Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive coercion and abuse (RCA) is a hidden form of violence against women, involving controlling behaviours by a partner or family member to manipulate a woman's reproductive autonomy, either to prevent or promote pregnancy. It correlates with partner violence, unintended pregnancy, contraceptive non-adherence, and poor sexual and reproductive health. However, research often oversimplifies RCA, treating it as a uniform phenomenon and neglecting its diverse manifestations. Additionally, there is scarce evidence on RCA in low- and middle-income countries. This study examines t

A qualitative exploration of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on gender-based violence against women living with HIV or tuberculosis in Timor Leste.

Violence against women or gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant public health issue facing women and girls in different settings. It is reported to have worsened globally during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on increased violence against women in general, which has been reported in many settings globally, there is a paucity of evidence of its impact on violence against highly vulnerable women living with HIV or tuberculosis (TB). Using a qualitative design, this study aimed to explore the views and experiences of women living with HIV (n = 19) or TB

[A different interpretation of the Oedipus complex].

Is mans fate irrevocable predetermined or have we a certain amout of free will? We assume, that although restricted by his own developed character, and given circumstances, man has a choice and is capable to influence his destiny. According to Freud our actions and behaviour are often unconsciously motivated and frequently incomprehensible for ourselves. They are then independent of our "will" and capacity of decision--making. Freud observes rightly the ambivalence of seelings between father and son, mother and daughter and regards this as the essential factor for the character-formation of th

Delayed pregnancy disclosure, attributed social factors and implications for antenatal care initiation: a qualitative study among Ugandan women and their partners.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women in Uganda access antenatal care later in pregnancy than recommended. One potential factor influencing timing of antenatal care initiation is delayed pregnancy disclosure affecting the social support needed to facilitate care-seeking. However, data exploring women's decisions to disclose their pregnancy and the consequences for antenatal care-seeking are limited. We sought to understand social norms around pregnancy disclosure among pregnant Ugandan women and their male partners to inform interventions promoting appropriate antenatal care initiation. METHODS: In Augu

The perceived influence of fathers' and non-gestational parents' experiences of postnatal depression on their relationship with their child and partner: a systematic review of qualitative studies and meta-synthesis.

INTRODUCTION: The role of the father/non-gestational parent has been found to be important in child development and wellbeing, but their mental health in the postnatal period is under-researched. Thus, this systematic review aimed to explore how postnatal depression was perceived to affect familial relationships. METHODS: A systematic review of qualitative literature was conducted, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed. Nine databases were searched for terms associated with fathers/non-gestational parents, postnatal depression, and

Spatial variation of intimate partner violence and its public health implication: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Intimate partner violence has a significant impact on people as individuals, as families, and as communities. The ripple effects extend beyond the immediate victims, straining healthcare systems, stifling economic productivity, and hindering social progress. The study aims to present the spatial distribution of intimate partner violence prevalence, identify socio-demographic and contextual predictors, and establish associations with public health indicators. METHODS: This is a secondary data analysis, using a nationally representative demographic and health survey (DHS) conduc

Femicide in Ethiopia: an autopsy-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Femicide, the most extreme form of gender-based violence directed at women and girls, often lacks sufficient national statistical data in several countries. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Global Study on Homicide reported that Ethiopian data were unavailable. Moreover, there is no published evidence regarding femicide cases. To address this gap, this study investigated femicide victims referred for medicolegal autopsies at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC) in Ethiopia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate all femicide cas

Distinguishing risk profiles among parent-only, partner-only, and dually perpetrating physical aggressors.

This study addressed whether and how men and women who are not physically aggressive, physically aggressive toward only their children or their partners, or aggressive toward both children and their partners differ in their risk profiles. Risk factors unrelated to the partner or parenting role (e.g., impulsivity) and specific to one of these roles (e.g., negative parenting attributions or negative partner attributions) were examined using profile analysis. Dually aggressive men and women had the highest overall risk across all types of risk factors; nonaggressive men and women had consistently
