Estimation of human spine orientation with inertial measurement units (IMU) at low sampling rate: How low can we go?

Studying people in their daily life is important for understanding conditions with multi-faceted aetiology such as chronic low back pain. Inertial measurement units can be used to reconstruct the posture and motion of the body outside of laboratories to enable this research. The battery life of these sensors strongly affects the usability of the system, since recharging them frequently is inconvenient and can lead to additional errors. A major determinant of the battery life for these sensors is sampling rate, but the relationship between sampling rate and accuracy in motion reconstruction is

Stress fracture of the posterior talar process in a female long-distance runner treated by osteosynthesis with screw fixation via two-portal hindfoot endoscopy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Stress fracture of the lateral tubercle of the posterior talar process in runners is extremely rare. Here, we describe a case of a female long-distance runner who sustained a stress fracture of the lateral tubercle of the posterior talar process. Osteosynthesis with screw fixation via two-portal hindfoot endoscopy achieved a good surgical outcome with a less invasive procedure. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old female long-distance runner who belonged to her university's road running club presented to our institution with a half-year history of persistent left hindfoot pain when r

The U-shaped relationship between exercise and cardiac morbidity.

Exercise confers a plethora of health benefits that are well documented, whereas physical inactivity is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The dose of physical activity required to achieve these benefits is relatively modest and equates to jogging at a pace of 15min per mile for 20-30min daily. In the current era, most athletes engage in a volume and intensity of exercise that is at least 5-10-fold greater than the general recommendations for physical activity. Such practice is evidenced by the fact that many sportsmen have achieved athletic feats that were consi

[Physical urticarias].

Ten percent of chronic urticarias are physical urticarias. Patients suffering from physical urticaria all have a suggestive history with specific eliciting stimuli (cold, heat, water, sun.) and wheals in the areas where the stimulus acts. The involved pathomechanisms are not well known. An unknown allergen (related to a cold or a heat injury, a polar molecule contained in the stratum corneum and soluble into water, a photoallergen) could induce a mast cell mediator release, followed by an infiltration by eosinophil then neutrophils polymorphonuclears. T-cells are not highly involved. Dermograp

Prospective study of physical activity and the risk of symptomatic diverticular disease in men.

The relationship between physical activity and risk of symptomatic diverticular disease has not been investigated directly. This association was examined in a prospective cohort of 47,678 American men, 40 to 75 years of age, and free of diagnosed diverticular disease, colon or rectal polyp, ulcerative colitis, and cancer before 1988. During four years of follow up, 382 newly diagnosed cases of symptomatic diverticular disease were documented. After adjustment for age, energy adjusted dietary fibre, and energy adjusted total fat, overall physical activity was inversely associated with the risk

Adult physical activity behavior: a trend analysis.

One of the health objectives for the nation is to have 60% of adults 18-64 years regularly active in vigorous physical activity by 1990. In this paper an effort is made to determine whether American society is making satisfactory progress toward this goal. Two independent databases are analyzed: time diaries collected from a national sample of American adults in 1981; and the Simmons Market Research Bureau, Inc., survey undertaken in 1984. Participation of adults 25-64 in moderate to vigorous activities that included racquet sports, swimming, hiking, bicycling, skiing, jogging, outdoor gardeni

A Comparison of Approaches for Motion Artifact Removal from Wireless Mobile EEG During Overground Running.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the only brain imaging method light enough and with the temporal precision to assess electrocortical dynamics during human locomotion. However, head motion during whole-body movements produces artifacts that contaminate the EEG and reduces ICA decomposition quality. We compared commonly used motion artifact removal approaches for reducing the motion artifact from the EEG during running and identifying stimulus-locked ERP components during an adapted flanker task. EEG was recorded from young adults during dynamic jogging and static standing versions of the Flanke

Activity Following Total Hip Arthroplasty: Which Patients Are Active, and Is Being Active Safe?

BACKGROUND: Younger and physically active patients demand a return to sport after total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, because of the risk of implant wear and loosening, high-impact activities are often not recommended. The current study evaluates predictive factors and revision rates in patients with higher activity levels. METHODS: This retrospective study included 4152 hips in 3828 patients aged 45-75 that underwent primary THA for primary osteoarthritis between 2009 and 2019 with a minimum follow-up of 2 years. Pain and Lower Extremity Activity Scale (LEAS) were assessed before and 2 ye

Anomalous origin of left main coronary artery from the right sinus of Valsalva leading to sudden death.

A 14-year-old female was brought to the emergency room with chest pain, shortness of breath and cyanosis. She was previously well with the exception of one previous post-exertion seizure-like event. On this day, she had been jogging when she complained of chest pain and collapsed. Her initial vital signs were heart rate 58/min, blood pressure 70/40 mmHg, respiratory rate 50/min, temperature 37 °C, and SaO2 68%. Electrocardiogram showed significant ST changes. She received multiple fluid boluses and dopamine was initiated (5-20 μg/kg/min). She was intubated and started on norepinephrine (0.05-0

Clinical experience with an activity sensing DDDR pacemaker using an accelerometer sensor.

The rate adaptive characteristics and pacemaker mediated tachycardia protection algorithm of an accelerometer based DDDR pacemaker were evaluated in 11 patients with bradycardia (seven atrioventricular block, four sick sinus syndrome). Rate adaptive programming was effected by collecting the acceleration level during a 3-minute moderate exercise ("tailoring" of sensor). In comparison with an externally attached piezoelectric sensor, the accelerometer sensor showed lower rate changes during external tapping of the pacemaker (16 +/- 3 vs 29 +/- 4 ppm, P less than 0.02) and applied direct pressur

Walking Dynamics, User Variability, and Window Size Effects in FGO-Based Smartphone PDR+GNSS Fusion.

The performance of smartphone-based pedestrian positioning strongly depends on the GNSS signal quality, the motion dynamics that influence PDR accuracy, and the way both sources of information are fused. While recent studies have shown the benefits of Factor Graph Optimization (FGO) for Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) fusion, the interaction between human motion, PDR errors, and FGO window configuration has not been systematically examined. This work investigates how walking dynamics affect the optimal configuration of sliding-window FGO, and to what

Effects of Moderate-Intensity Aerobic Exercise on Clinical Symptoms and Physiological Outcomes in Young Adults with Persistent Allergic Rhinitis: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Allergic Rhinitis (AR) is an IgE-mediated inflammatory disorder that impairs quality of life and systemic function. Following the 'one airway, one disease' paradigm, AR-related inflammation often extends to the lower respiratory tract. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of an 8-week moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MOA) program on clinical symptoms, nasal airflow, airway inflammation, pulmonary function, and cardiorespiratory parameters in young adults with physician-confirmed persistent AR. To isolate the exercise effects, all participants discontinued antihistamine

Comparison Study of Mini-Incision Versus Original Open Technique of the Half-Mini-Bunnell Achilles Tendon Repair.

Mini-incision surgical procedures in our institution have been developed by decreasing the total skin incision length from the original mini half-Bunnell tendon repair technique. We hypothesized that the mini-incision, or minimum invasive Achilles tendon repair technique, would promote the tendon healing process leading to better outcomes and a reduced complication rate compared to the conventional open repair. The study sought to determine the more optimal method by comparing 44 mini-incision sutures to the 99 sutures in the original open Achilles tendon repairs. The mean skin incision length
