Functional neural bases of numerosity judgments in healthy adults born preterm.

High rates of mathematics learning disabilities among individuals born preterm (<37weeksGA) have spurred calls for a greater understanding of the nature of these weaknesses and their neural underpinnings. Groups of healthy, high functioning young adults born preterm and full term (n=20) completed a symbolic and non-symbolic magnitude comparison task while undergoing functional MRI scanning. Collectively, participants showed activation in superior and inferior frontal and parietal regions previously linked to numeric processing when comparing non-symbolic magnitude arrays separated by small num

Biased temporal order judgments in chronic neglect influenced by trunk position.

Numerous studies have reported that temporal order perception is biased in neurological patients with extinction and neglect. These individuals tend to perceive two objectively simultaneous stimuli as occurring asynchronously, with the ipsilesional item being perceived as appearing prior to the contralesional item. Likewise, they report that two stimuli occurred simultaneously in situations where the contralesional item is presented substantially prior to the ipsilesional item. Therefore, they exhibit a biased point of subjective simultaneity (PSS). Here we demonstrate that the magnitude of th

Examination of the role of implicit clinical judgments during the mental health intake.

We examined the characteristics of therapists' implicit clinical judgments during the mental health intake. Following the intake sessions with new clients, we conducted 129 semistructured interviews with 47 therapists. We found that 82% of therapists and 75% of interviews included reference to implicit clinical judgments. Therapists referred to these judgments as a cognitive process that relied on knowledge acquired through past clinical experiences and was primarily based on nonverbal cues and affective communication. Therapists used implicit processes when evaluating how to facilitate a good

Does knowledge of medical diagnosis bias auditory-perceptual judgments of dysphonia?

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To determine whether knowledge of medical diagnosis biases listeners with varied experience levels in their judgments of dysphonia. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, mixed experimental and comparative design. METHODS: Twenty-six speakers with dysphonia and four normal controls provided speech recordings. Twenty novice and eight experienced clinicians evaluated speech samples for roughness and breathiness using 100-mm visual analog scales. In one condition, the speech samples were presented without diagnostic information; in the second condition, samples were presented in conju

Happy but not so approachable: the social judgments of individuals with generalized social phobia.

BACKGROUND: We examined social approachability judgments in a psychiatric population that frequently experiences interpersonal difficulties and reduced social satisfaction, individuals with generalized social phobia (gSP). METHODS: Our objective was to broaden the understanding of the social cognitive tendencies of individuals with gSP by systematically investigating their interpretation of positive facial expressions. We hypothesized that approachability ratings would be lower for positive as well as negative emotional faces in the gSP group compared to the healthy comparison group. Each par

Children's judgments about their own self-knowledge: the role of disclosure to other.

Previous research has suggested that children of 5/6 years fail to understand that they are the authority on their own self-knowledge. That is, when asked questions like, 'Who knows best when you are feeling tired?', they tend to cite their mother rather than themselves. Here we report a study that, rather than asking about generalities ('Who knows best what you are thinking?'), presented 5-, 7- 9- and 11-year-children with hypothetical vignettes about specific circumstances in which they were described as either disclosing or not disclosing a specified state to their mother. Children were sub

Trait-disgust vs. fear of contamination and the judgmental bias of contamination concerns.

Mechanisms by which trait-disgust, i.e. relatively stable individual differences in disgust proneness, affects anxious psychopathology are not well understood. A possible pathway might be the impact of trait-disgust on cognitive processes, which are involved in the anxiety disorders. The present study extends findings on interpretational and attentional bias by investigating the judgmental bias. Based on theories on disgust, it was assumed that trait-disgust is related to predictions of catching a disease. The present study examined the likelihood of becoming ill, the probability of avoidance

The link between judgments of comparative risk and own risk: further evidence.

Individuals typically believe that they are less likely than the average person to experience negative events, a phenomenon termed "unrealistic optimism". The direct method of assessing unrealistic optimism employs a question of the form, "Compared with the average person, what is the chance that X will occur to you?". However, it has been proposed that responses to such a question (direct-estimates) are based essentially just on estimates that X will occur to the self (self-estimates). If this is so, any factors that affect one of these estimates should also affect the other. This prediction

Controlled trial using computerized feedback to improve physicians' diagnostic judgments.

The goal of this study was to test an innovative method to improve physicians' diagnostic judgments by integrating the use of a computer program (employing cognitive feedback to teach a clinical rule that predicts the probability of streptococcal pharyngitis), a traditional lecture, and periodic disease-prevalence reports. In a controlled trial using pre- and postintervention measures involving 885 patients, the authors compared the effects of the integrated method on the diagnostic judgments of seven experienced physicians at a university health service (from 1982 to 1985) with the effects of

Lateral asymmetry in perceptual judgments of reading disabled, hyperactive and control children.

Three groups of 11 year old boys, classified as reading-disabled/hyperactive, hyperactive, and normal controls, made same-different judgments to pairs of verbal or visuospatial stimuli presented simultaneously to the right or left side of a fixation point. Two experimental paradigms were used, one emphasizing comparison judgments from memory, the other, new comparison judgments. Reading-disabled boys made more errors of judgment than did controls. All subjects exhibited faster reaction times for different judgments of pairs appearing in the left visual field. Reaction times were longer and err

A comparison of transverse and vertical pharyngeal flaps using electromyography and judgments of nasality.

Previous studies have reported less than adequate speech results for vertical types of pharyngeal flaps with some patients. However, no controlled judgments of nasality have been reported for transverse pharyngeal flaps, and no comparative studies have been done. In this investigation, 21 listeners evaluated nasality in two groups of seven cleft palate patients. One group had had vertical pharyngeal flaps, while the other group had had transverse pharyngeal flaps. The possible relationship of observable electromyographic activity to nasality was also studied. The results indicated that percept

[The judgment on gas gangrene in the framework of liability cases and applications for the extension of compensation].

On the basis of law of the German Demoncratic Republic the problems for the judgement of clostridial infections in medical reports are discussed. If in exogenous infections severe mistakes against fundamental rules of surgery are evident, malpractice must be affirmed. Endogenous infections after operations on the gastrointestinal tract are in mostly all cases induced by bacteria for the viscera. Prophylaxis is not always possible, infections are not avoidable. So in these cases for malpractice there is practically no basis. The conditions for "materian aid" are also not existant.

Weighting Bayesian information in human judgment under uncertainty: a hierarchical theory of cognitive biases.

Cognitive biases are typically viewed as departures from normative Bayesian reasoning. Instead, we propose that such biases emerge from a hierarchical cognitive architecture that adaptively regulates the weighting of prior beliefs and incoming evidence when cognitive resources are limited and uncertainty exists. While existing approaches, including heuristic, ecological rationality, Bayesian cognition, and resource-rational theories, capture important aspects of probabilistic inference, they differ in how inferential weighting is specified and adapted across contexts. We introduce Adaptive Bay

Oxytocin mediates self-other and inevitability asymmetries in high-conflict moral judgment in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is characterized by social cognition deficits, yet the neurobiological mechanisms of moral reasoning remain poorly understood. In particular, self-other differentiation and contextual sensitivity, reflected in moral asymmetries during high-conflict dilemmas, have been underexplored in relation to oxytocin, a key neuropeptide implicated in social cognition. METHODS: We recruited 58 individuals with schizophrenia and 31 healthy controls. Participants completed a validated set of high-conflict personal moral dilemmas, varying by perspective (self vs. other) and harm evi

Chest pain and AI interpretation: The essential role of clinical judgment and quality data.

Chest pain is a common and complex condition in emergency departments, often complicating the diagnostic process due to its wide range of potential causes. This case report presents a 72-year-old man with chest pain and ST-segment elevation on ECG, initially suggestive of acute coronary syndrom. AI-assisted ECG analysis reinforced this suspicion; however, angiography revealed patent coronary arteries. When his symptoms persisted, further investigation uncovered a pneumothorax. Additional evaluation identified a digitization error affecting the AI interpretation. This case underscores the impor

A "Prediction - Detection - Judgment" framework for sudden water contamination event detection with online monitoring.

The contamination detection technology helps in water quality management and protection in surface water. It is important to detect sudden contamination events timely from dynamic variations due to various interference factors in online water quality monitoring data. In this study, a framework named "Prediction - Detection - Judgment" is proposed with a method framework of "Time series increment - Hierarchical clustering - Bayes' theorem model". Time to detection is used as an evaluation index of contamination detection methods, along with the probability of detection and false alarm rate. The

Selective changes in moral judgment by noninvasive brain stimulation of the medial prefrontal cortex.

Multiple cortical networks intervene in moral judgment, among which the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the medial prefrontal structures (medial PFC) emerged as two major territories, which have been traditionally attributed, respectively, to cognitive control and affective reactions. However, some recent theoretical and empirical accounts disputed this dualistic approach to moral evaluation. In the present study, to further assess the functional contribution of the medial PFC in moral judgment, we modulated its cortical excitability by means of transcranial direct current stimulati

Concordance of clinician judgment of mild traumatic brain injury history with a diagnostic standard.

The concordance of Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) clinician judgment of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) history with American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine (ACRM)-based criteria was examined for Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) Veterans. In order to understand inconsistencies in agreement, we also examined the associations between evaluation outcomes and conceptually relevant patient characteristics, deployment-related events, current self-reported health symptoms, and suspected psychiatric conditions. The Veteran sample comprised 14,026 OIF/OEF

Evaluation of distracting pain and clinical judgment in cervical spine clearance of trauma patients.

BACKGROUND: The concept of distracting pain (DP) is a controversial subjective confounder that often impedes the efficient and timely clearance of the cervical spine (C-spine). This study attempted to define DP more objectively and assess its true potential to mask the presence of C-spine injury. It also evaluated reliability and safety of clinical judgment in discounting the significance of pain peripheral to the neck (PP). METHODS: This prospective study included patients with a Glasgow Coma Score ≥14 at a level I trauma center presenting in a C-spine collar. Demographics, mechanism of inju
