Scanning electron microscopy of experimental keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs: cornea and bulbar conjunctiva.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was produced experimentally in 16 beagles by bilateral surgical removal of the lacrimal and nictitans glands; four dogs were not treated, and 12 received tear-replacement therapy on post-operative days 7 through 28. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was verified by reduction in Schirmer tear test values by post-operative day 6, and there was no response on day 28 to tear-replacement therapy. Corneas of both normal and tear-deficient dogs had polygonal squamous epithelial cells of light and dark electron density by scanning electron microscopy. Light cells had more microvill

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca: histopathologic study of nictitating membrane and lacrimal glands from 28 dogs.

Forty nictitating membrane glands and 9 main lacrimal glands were obtained for histologic evaluation from 28 dogs with keratoconjunctivitis sicca as the result of azosulfapyridine toxicity, canine distemper, multisystemic autoimmune disease (Sjögren's syndrome-like syndrome), congenital origin, and unilateral and bilateral idiopathic keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Similar glands from 6 control dogs were studied. The most prevalent (87%) histopathologic finding was variable degrees of multifocal chronic adenitis, characterized by acinar atrophy and replacement with increased numbers of plasma cell

Punctal occlusion is safe and efficient for the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in patients with ocular GvHD.

The use of punctal plugs in the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) in inflammatory eye disease remains controversial because of the potentially increased retention time of tears enriched with inflammatory cytokines that may aggravate eye inflammation. We describe the safety and efficacy of punctal occlusion in a retrospective analysis of 19 patients (16 men) with KCS due to chronic GvHD (cGvHD). Efficacy and safety were assessed by subjective and objective criteria (symptoms, corneal fluorescein staining, tear film break-up time (BUT), Schirmer I test, Jones test and visual acuity).

The role of apoptosis in the pathogenesis of canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca: the effect of topical Cyclosporin A therapy.

PURPOSE: The exact etiology of dry eye is unknown but is believed to be multifactorial. Apoptosis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome (SS). This study attempted to gain a better understanding of the role of apoptosis and its regulation in the patho-physiology of dry eye. The therapeutic effect of immunomodulatory agents such as cyclosporin A (CsA) in the treatment of dry eye, particularly its impact on the level of apoptosis in the target tissues, is also investigated. METHODS: A colony of dogs with spontaneous chronic idiopathic keratocon

Ophthalmological tests in patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca with and without association of primary Sjögren's syndrome.

We compared clinical, laboratory and histological tests in patients with keratoconjuctivities sicca with and without association of primary Sjögren's syndrome. Rosa bengal staining, osmolarity and impression cytology had high specificity and sensitivity for a correct diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca with and without primary Sjögren's syndrome. Schirmer and breakup time (BUT) tests were not quite as specific or sensitive. Impression cytology was the only ocular test that showed significant differences between the two pathological groups.

Sucralfate and sodium sucrose sulphate in the treatment of superficial corneal disease in keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

We have studied the effect of the aluminum complex of sucrose sulphate (Sucralfate suspension) and the sodium salt of sucrose sulphate (sodium sucrose sulphate solution) on patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Eyes treated with either of these two drugs showed a decrease in painfulness and blurring of vision. On examination the surface area of the corneal lesions, stained with fluorescein, diminished during treatment. As for the difference in effect between the two eyedrops, the solution was better tolerated.

Treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca with liquid paraffin or polyvinyl alcohol in double-blind trial.

Twenty-two eyes affected with keratoconjunctivitis sicca have been subjected to double trials using the double-blind randomized cross-over technique. Polyvinyl alcohol in a 5% concentration improved the condition whereas liquid paraffin aggravated it, as estimated subjectively, and by the measurement of the break up time of the corneal film, and, finally, by the scoring of rose bengal vital staining of exposed cornea and conjunctiva. The conclusion is drawn that oil is contraindicated in keratoconjunctivitis sicca, and that rose bengal scoring (modified Bijsterveld method) is a valuable aid in

Use of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells in keratoconjunctivitis sicca in a canine model.

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) or dry eye disease (DED) is an immune-mediated multifactorial disease, with high level of prevalence in humans and dogs. Our aim in this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (Ad-MSCs) implanted around the lacrimal glands in 12 dogs (24 eyes) with KCS, which is refractory to current available treatments. Schirmer tear test (STT) and ocular surface integrity were assessed at 0 (before treatment), 3, 6, and 9 months after treatment. Average STT values and all clinical signs showed a statistically

Keratoconjunctivitis sicca attributable to parasympathetic facial nerve dysfunction associated with hypothyroidism in a horse.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 6-year-old 680-kg (1,496-lb) German Warmblood gelding was evaluated because of bilateral blepharospasm and head shaking. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Moderate blepharospasm was evident bilaterally, and both eyes had hyperemic and edematous conjunctivas and lusterless corneas. For each eye, the Schirmer tear test value was only 7 mm/min. The horse's nasal mucosa was dry. Abnormal behaviors included mild repetitive vertical movement of the head, snorting, and flehmen response (classic signs of head shaking). Touching the horse's nostrils and face revealed paresthesia and dysesthesia w
