Maternal and congenital human cytomegalovirus infection: laboratory testing for detection and diagnosis.

Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the leading cause of congenital infection worldwide and the most common cause of non-genetic sensorineural hearing loss. As there is no vaccine or other specific intervention to prevent congenital CMV infection, there is a need to identify maternal and congenital infections with sensitive and specific testing as early as possible. There is no widely accepted practice for screening during pregnancy or in all newborns for identification of possible cases of congenital CMV. Currently, screening during pregnancy is limited to those identified as at risk followed by f

Clinical, laboratory, and molecular epidemiology of Orientia tsutsugamushi infection from Southwestern India.

Scrub typhus is a vector borne disease which in a proportion of patients causes multiorgan involvement and death if untreated. Infecting genotype and virulence factors play a role in severity of infection and outcome. The current prospective cohort study was undertaken to elucidate the severity of illness in scrub typhus patients and to identify the circulating genotypes in Karnataka, India. A total of 214 patients of either gender from 9 districts of Karnataka and one patient each from Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, India were enrolled in the study. With a predefined severity criterion, 132 patie

Clinical and laboratory characteristics of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis induced by Leishmania infantum infection.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) could progress to secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), which is a rare but life-threatening condition with poor prognosis. So far, the clinical and laboratory characteristics of VL associated HLH have not been well elucidated. METHOD AND FINDINGS: In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the clinical and laboratory profiles between 17 patients with VL associated HLH and 27 patients with VL alone admitted at the Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University from May 2016 to March 2021. In addition to the identification of Leish

Clinical and laboratory profiles of hospitalized children with acute respiratory virus infection.

PURPOSE: Despite the availability of molecular methods, identification of the causative virus in children with acute respiratory infections (ARIs) has proven difficult as the same viruses are often detected in asymptomatic children. METHODS: Multiplex reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays were performed to detect 15 common respiratory viruses in children under 15 years of age who were hospitalized with ARI between January 2013 and December 2015. Viral epidemiology and clinical profiles of single virus infections were evaluated. RESULTS: Of 3,505 patients, viruses were identi

Microbiology laboratory and the management of mother-child varicella-zoster virus infection.

Varicella-zoster virus, which is responsible for varicella (chickenpox) and herpes zoster (shingles), is ubiquitous and causes an acute infection among children, especially those aged less than six years. As 90% of adults have had varicella in childhood, it is unusual to encounter an infected pregnant woman but, if the disease does appear, it can lead to complications for both the mother and fetus or newborn. The major maternal complications include pneumonia, which can lead to death if not treated. If the virus passes to the fetus, congenital varicella syndrome, neonatal varicella (particular

Role of the clinical microbiology laboratory in infection control--a Danish perspective.

Clinical microbiology laboratories in Denmark are located in hospitals and staffed by clinical microbiologists who are clinically trained medical doctors. Each county has its own clinical microbiology unit, serving a population of 0.3-0.6 million. The responsibilities of clinical microbiology unit cover many different aspects of infection control. They include detection of outbreaks of hospital-acquired infections, screening for multi-resistant organisms, advice to clinicians about disinfection, sterilization and isolation procedures, and the rational use of antibiotics. Clinical microbiologis

Spectrum of clinical and laboratory characteristics of HIV infection in northern India.

To define the impact of HIV infection in India, the clinical and laboratory profile and the correlation of CD4 count to the likely opportunistic infection in a cohort of 134 HIV positive patients in Northern India was analysed. Majority of the patients, 72% and 67.8% (children and adults respectively) were asymptomatic, having been detected during routine screening and maintained that status for a median follow-up period of 3 years. Among the symptomatic patients, oropharyngeal candidiasis was the most common opportunistic infection followed closely by tuberculosis (both pulmonary and extra pu

Ebola Virus Disease: An Update on Epidemiology, Symptoms, Laboratory Findings, Diagnostic Issues, and Infection Prevention and Control Issues for Laboratory Professionals.

The 2014 to 2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD), through the sheer size of the outbreak and combined experience within both resource-rich and resource-poor settings, allowed for more information to be gained about the clinical and pathologic features of EVD. This review highlights the range of aspects of EVD that the authors find are relevant to laboratory medicine, including the need for robust prediagnostic and laboratory processing algorithms to inform sampling of suspect patients, the vast majority of whom, in resource-rich settings, will have another diagnosis.
