The Characterization of Lactic Acid Bacteria Strains as Components of a Biopreparation for Chickens for Slaughter.

Since 2022, the European Union has banned the use of antibiotics in animal production. We conducted studies to characterize Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (47, AN8, and OK-B) and Ligilactobacillus salivarius (AN9) and evaluate their potential to create a biopreparation based on fermented whey for chickens. The following methods were used: lactic acid bacteria (LAB) culture and storage, crystal violet staining, Koch's plate method, Caco-2 cell culture, hydrophobicity test, and spectrophotometric measurements. All bacteria showed weak adhesion to polystyrene and collagen, and the L. plantarum spe

Levels of lactic acid's concordance with pH in pediatric parapneumonic pleural effusion.

UNLABELLED: Purpose of the article: The indication of pleural drainage in parapneumonic pleural effusion (PPE) is still controversial. Pleural fluid's (PF) pH is widely used as an indicator of the need for pleural drainage. We hypothesized that PF's lactate will have a high concordance with pH, and thus, may be a valuable tool to determine the need for pleural drainage in pediatric PPE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a descriptive, prospective study sequentially enrolling those pediatric patients admitted to a tertiary University Hospital with a PPE between 2008 and 2018. Patients were c

Effects of Lactic Acid and Salt on Enterotoxin A Production and Growth of Staphylococcus aureus.

Food poisoning caused by Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) produced in foods. Staphylococcal food poisoning is mostly caused by staphylococcal enterotoxin type A (SEA) among SEs. Growth/no growth for S. aureus under various environmental conditions was well studied with a logistic regression model so far. Recently we successfully described the boundaries of SEA production and growth of S. aureus in broth at various temperatures and salt concentrations with the model. In this study, the effects of lactic acid and salt on SEA production and growth of S. aur

The crystallization behavior of poly(lactic acid) with different types of nucleating agents.

The effects of six nucleating agents (NAs), i.e., orotic acid (OA), potassium salt of 3,5-bis(methoxycarbonyl)benzenesulfonate (LAK-301), substituted-aryl phosphate salts (TMP-5), talc (TALC), N'1,N'6-dibenzoyladipohydrazide (TMC-306) and N1,N1'-(ethane-1,2-diyl)bis(N2-phenyloxalamide) (OXA), on the crystallization behavior of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were compared by DSC. Under the same dosing of 0.5wt%, the nucleation effect of the NAs for PLA declines in the order of TMC-306≈OXA>TALC≫TMP-5≈LAK-301≈OA. The nucleation efficiency (NE) of TMC-306 and OXA is around 50%, which is almost 2 times of

Fluid transport by the cornea endothelium is dependent on buffering lactic acid efflux.

Maintenance of corneal hydration is dependent on the active transport properties of the corneal endothelium. We tested the hypothesis that lactic acid efflux, facilitated by buffering, is a component of the endothelial fluid pump. Rabbit corneas were perfused with bicarbonate-rich (BR) or bicarbonate-free (BF) Ringer of varying buffering power, while corneal thickness was measured. Perfusate was collected and analyzed for lactate efflux. In BF with no added HEPES, the maximal corneal swelling rate was 30.0 ± 4.1 μm/h compared with 5.2 ± 0.9 μm/h in BR. Corneal swelling decreased directly with

Animal model for in vivo evaluation of cholesterol reduction by lactic Acid bacteria.

For many years, it has been recognized that elevated serum cholesterol is a risk factor associated with atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, the latter being a major cause of death in Western countries. Numerous drugs that lower cholesterol have been used to treat hypocholesterolemic individuals. However, the undesirable side effects of these compounds have caused concerns about their therapeutic use. Ingestion of probiotic (beneficial for health) lactic acid bacteria (LAB) would possibly be a more natural method to decrease serum cholesterol in humans, as has been was reported. Previou

Use of cerebrospinal fluid lactic acid concentration in the diagnosis of fungal meningitis.

A patient with a several year history of normal pressure hydrocephalus was found to have an infection owing to Cryptococcus neoformans. Cryptococcal infection was not suspected until typical cells were observed in a Wright's stained smear of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A review of past medical findings in this patient showed elevated CSF values for lactic acid and protein. This case prompted us to review the use of lactic acid as an indicator of fungal meningitis and compare it to other more commonly used nonspecific indicators of fungal meningitis, notably the concentrations of glucose and pro

[Significance of the determination of lactic acid in the cerebrospinal fluid for the differential diagnosis of meningitis].

Measurement of cerebrospinal fluid lactic acid by an enzymatic test has been evaluated in 164 patients. The upper limit of normal CSF lactate was 300 mg/l. The CSF lactate level is useful for differential diagnosis between partially treated pyogenic meningitis and tuberculous meningitis. The increase of CSF lactate is not specific for meningitis and must be interpreted taking into account the clinical situation.

The importance of lactic acid levels in body fluids in the detection of bacterial infections.

Lactic acid can be formed as a "blind alley" in the metabolic degradation of glucose, especially under anaerobic conditions. The presence of bacterial infection in a closed body cavity induces elevated levels of lactic acid, as is evident in bacterial and fungal infections inthe meninges, joints, peritoneum, and pleura. Although measurement of lactate levels is not a test without faults, it is still a valuable tool in the early recognition of bacterial infections of various body cavities and can assist in the differentiation between infectious and noninfectious conditions. The recovery effect and mechanism of sublethally injured Salmonella Typhimurium by lactic acid.

Foodborne pathogens can survive in a sublethally injured (SI) state during treatment, which can repair themselves under suitable conditions, posing a potential risk to food safety. In this study, the recovery effects of lactic acid-induced SI Salmonella Typhimurium were investigated in beef, milk, and liquid media. The microstructural and physiological function measurements, as well as transcriptomic analysis were performed to elucidate the recovery mechanism of SI bacteria. The results demonstrated that SI bacteria could completely recover in beef, milk, and liquid media. SI S. Typhimurium gr

Clinical Relevance of Plasma Lactic Acid in the Onset and Prognosis of Sudden Deafness.

Sudden deafness poses a significant threat to patients' quality of life, yet effective indicators for evaluating its onset and prognosis remain elusive. The inner ear is primarily supplied by the labyrinthine artery, which lacks collateral circulation. Changes in coagulation function and hemorheology can cause spasm or thrombosis of the labyrinthine artery, leading to ischemia, hypoxia, and microcirculation disorders in the inner ear, ultimately resulting in sudden deafness. This retrospective study examined 196 patients with sudden deafness, utilizing the 2015 Chinese guideline for diagnosis

Amyloid A and lactic acid as a predictor in patients with sepsis in patients with liver cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is triggered by pathogenic microorganisms, resulting in a systemic inflammatory response. Liver cirrhosis and sepsis create a vicious cycle: cirrhosis weakens immune function, raising infection risk and hindering pathogen clearance. Optimal treatment outcomes depend on understanding liver cirrhosis patients' sepsis risk factors. Thus, preventing sepsis involves addressing these risk factors. Therefore, early identification and understanding of clinical characteristics in liver cirrhosis patients with sepsis are crucial for selecting appropriate antibiotics. A case-control st

Genomic insights into antibiotic resistance and mobilome of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and Bifidobacterium sp. (bifidobacteria) can carry antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), yet data on resistance mechanisms in these bacteria are limited. The aim of our study was to identify the underlying genetic mechanisms of phenotypic resistance in 103 LAB and bifidobacteria using whole-genome sequencing. Sequencing data not only confirmed the presence of 36 acquired ARGs in genomes of 18 strains, but also revealed wide dissemination of intrinsic ARGs. The presence of acquired ARGs on known and novel mobile genetic elements raises the possibility of their horizo

Display of recombinant proteins at the surface of lactic acid bacteria: strategies and applications.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are promising vectors of choice to deliver active molecules to mucosal tissues. They are recognized as safe by the World Health Organization and some strains have probiotic properties. The wide range of potential applications of LAB-driven mucosal delivery includes control of inflammatory bowel disease, vaccine delivery, and management of auto-immune diseases. Because of this potential, strategies for the display of proteins at the surface of LAB are gaining interest. To display a protein at the surface of LAB, a signal peptide and an anchor domain are necessary. The

Use of selected lactic acid bacteria in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Helicobacter pylori is among the major pathogenic bacteria that cause chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer disease and is related to the development of gastric cancer. Several chemicals, including antibiotics, have been used to eradicate H. pylori; however, they do not always curb the infection. Ten representative type strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were screened for antagonism toward H. pylori via inhibition of urease activity. Strains inhibiting the binding of H. pylori to human gastric cell line cells and suppressing H. pylori-induced interleukin-8 (IL-8) production were also screened.

The immunomodulatory effects of lactic acid bacteria for improving immune functions and benefits.

Probiotics have a number of beneficial health effects in humans and animals, such as reducing lactose intolerance symptoms and enhancing the bioavailability of nutrients. Probiotics help regulate intestinal microflora and immunomodulatory properties. Probiotics also decrease the prevalence of allergies in susceptible individuals, inhibit the inflammatory responses in the gut, and have antagonistic effects against intestinal and food-borne pathogens. Bacteria typically colonize the intestinal tract first and then reinforce the host defense systems by inducing generalized mucosal immune response

Respiratory effects of lactic acid injected into the jugular vein of newborn rabbits.

To define respiratory effects of peripheral acidemia during early development, we injected lactic acid (LA) into the jugular vein of 32 1- to 7-d-old rabbit pups and four adult rabbits. The body weight of newborns varied between 67 +/- 17 g in 1-d-old and 119.8 +/- 33.7 g in 7-d-old animals versus 4 +/- 0.1 kg in adults. Animals were anesthetized with ketamine (30 mg/kg) and urethane (0.6-1.2 g/kg), tracheotomized, and breathed spontaneously. Diaphragmatic electromyogram, tidal volume, esophageal pressure, and arterial pressure were recorded. In adult rabbits, a LA dose of 0.25 mM/kg elicited
