Acute liver injury is triggered by dysbiosis and microbial translocation involving gut-liver axis.

Acute liver injury (ALI) is a severe clinical condition that can progress to chronic liver failure, cirrhosis, or hepatocellular carcinoma, yet therapeutic options remain limited. Here, we investigated how hepatotoxin-induced gut-liver dysbiosis drives hepatic inflammation through microbial crosstalk. Using three murine ALI models, we assessed liver injury, intestinal barrier integrity, microbial composition along the gut-liver axis, and immune activation. Each hepatotoxin recapitulated distinct features of human ALI and induced unique patterns of hepatic and intestinal injury, enabling the pr

Uncovering how selected potent bacteriocins reshape the broiler chicken gut microbiome in a PolyFermS continuous in vitro model.

BACKGROUND: Bacteriocins are promising alternatives to antibiotics in poultry production, offering pathogen control with minimal disruption to gut microbiota and reduced risk of resistance dissemination. This study compared the impact of three bacteriocins-microcin J25, nisin Z, and pediocin PA-1-against bacitracin as a positive control, specifically evaluating their effects on gut microbiota composition and metabolic activity. The study utilized the PolyFermS continuous fermentation model to simulate chicken caecal conditions. RESULTS: 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that bacitracin and nisin Z

Seed Priming with Antagonistic Bacteria for Managing Fusarium Crown and Root Rot in Durum Wheat.

Durum wheat is increasingly threatened by Fusarium diseases, including Fusarium crown rot (FCR) and Fusarium root rot (FRR), caused primarily by Fusarium culmorum, F. graminearum, and F. pseudograminearum. These pathogens reduce yield by causing pre- and postemergence damping-off and inducing symptoms including stem and root browning, as well as severe growth stunting. Traditional control methods, including agronomic practices and seed treatments with fungicides, face limitations because of pathogen resistance and environmental concerns, emphasizing the need for sustainable, microbiologically

Prenatal Ethanol Exposure and Adolescent Stress Are Associated, in Male Rats, with a Compulsive-Like Phenotype and Alterations in Microbiota Composition and Neuroimmune Gene Expression.

Prenatal ethanol exposure (PEE) alters neurobehavioral function, yet the factors associated with these effects, particularly in interaction with stress, remain poorly understood. We examined whether combined exposure to PEE and adolescent restraint stress altered compulsive-like behavior and, in the sex showing the clearest combined effects, assessed gut microbiota composition and neuroimmune-related gene expression. Male and female Wistar rats exposed to ethanol on gestational days 17-20 were subjected to restraint stress (RES) or control conditions during adolescence. Behavioral assessments

Gut microbiota as a central mediator in hydrogen gas-induced alleviation of colitis via TLR4/NF-κB and Nrf2 pathway regulation.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and relapsing autoimmune disorder of the gastrointestinal tract with incompletely elucidated pathogenesis and limited therapeutic options. Although hydrogen gas (H₂) has demonstrated therapeutic efficacy in various diseases including IBD, its mechanisms of action, particularly its interaction with the gut microbiota, remain poorly characterized. This study reveals that H₂ inhalation effectively reversed dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced dysbiosis by suppressing the expansion of potential pathogenic bacteria (e.g., Enterobacteriaceae and Escheric

Lithocholic acid ameliorates ulcerative colitis via the PXR/TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway and gut microbiota modulation.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the colon, closely linked to dysbiosis of gut microbiota and imbalances in bile acids. Lithocholic acid (LCA), a secondary bile acid, plays a crucial role in maintaining gut health; however, its specific therapeutic potential in UC remains to be fully elucidated. This study investigates the efficacy of LCA in alleviating UC and explores the underlying mechanisms, particularly focusing on the PXR/TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 signaling pathway and gut microbiota modulation. Using a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model, our findings

A Novel Lactobacillus brevis Fermented with a Vegetable Substrate (AL0035) Counteracts TNBS-Induced Colitis by Modulating the Gut Microbiota Composition and Intestinal Barrier.

Crohn's and ulcerative colitis are common conditions associated with inflammatory bowel disease as well as intestinal flora and epithelial barrier dysfunction. A novel fermented Lactobacillus brevis (AL0035) herein assayed in a trinitro benzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis mice model after oral administration significantly counteracted the body weight loss and improves the disease activity index and histological injury scores. AL0035 significantly decreased the mRNA and protein expression of different pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNFalpha, IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-12, IFN-gamma) and enhanced

Investigating Casual Associations Among Gut Microbiota, Metabolites, and Neurodegenerative Diseases: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies had explored that gut microbiota was associated with neurodegenerative diseases (including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)) through the gut-brain axis, among which metabolic pathways played an important role. However, the underlying causality remained unclear. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to evaluate potential causal relationships between gut microbiota, metabolites, and neurodegenerative diseases through Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. METHODS: We selected genetic variants associated with gut microbi

Production of biogenic amines by lactic acid bacteria and enterobacteria isolated from fresh pork sausages packaged in different atmospheres and kept under refrigeration.

The occurrence of in vitro amino acid activity in bacterial strains associated with fresh pork sausages packaged in different atmospheres and kept in refrigeration was studied. The presence of biogenic amines in decarboxylase broth was confirmed by ion-exchange chromatography and by the presence of the corresponding decarboxylase genes by PCR. From the 93 lactic acid bacteria and 100 enterobacteria strains analysed, the decarboxylase medium underestimates the number of biogenic amine-producer strains. 28% of the lactic acid bacteria produced tyramine and presented the tdc gene. All the tyramin

Effects of European authorised level of zinc from different sources on the physiology and intestinal ecosystem and performance of piglets weaned at different ages.

Early weaning can impact piglets' gut health, and some forms of zinc (Zn) may mitigate this stress. This study evaluates the effect of authorised level of Zn, from different sources, on the performance and gut health of piglets weaned at different ages. At weaning (d0), 96 piglets weaned at either 21 (Early, E; 48) or 26 (Normal, N; 48) days were divided into 3 feeding groups: Zn sulphate (SO4), Zn glycinate (Gly) or a porous form of Zn oxide (Hi) to achieve 150 mg/kg of Zn. On d8 and d21, 8 piglets/group were slaughtered and oxidative status (blood), jejunal morphology, gene expression, micro

Glutathione S-transferase (GST) and cortisol levels vs. microbiology of the digestive system of sheep during lambing.

BACKGROUND: During parturition, animals exhibit variation in hormone levels, homeostasis disturbance and dysfunction of the immune system as a result of stress. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is responsible for the occurrence of oxidative stress in the cells. Cortisol is known as the stress hormone, but it is also involved in the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and metabolism processes led by adipose tissue. The aim of the this study was to determine how the levels of GST and cortisol change depending on the parity. Additionally, the influence of lambing on the microbiological compositi

Smoking has disruptive effects on the small bowel luminal microbiome.

Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of cancer, and affects the respiratory, oral, fecal, and duodenal mucosa-associated microbiota. However, the effects of smoking on the duodenal luminal microbiome have not been studied directly. We aimed to compare the duodenal luminal microbiome in never-smokers, current smokers, and ex-smokers who quit ≥ 10 years ago. In a cross-sectional study, current smokers (CS, n = 24) were identified and matched to never-smokers (NS, n = 27) and ex-smokers (XS, n = 27) by age (± 5 years), body mass index (BMI, ± 3 kg/m2), and sex.
